Founder Diaries · Hotel Collection by Room
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
A woody scent behaves like a piece of furniture: put it in a room too small for it and everything else in the room has to move around it. Woods are the one family that genuinely improves with volume — and a master bedroom is the first room in most homes big enough to let one do what it was composed to do.
Quick answers — read this first
The one to buy? The 1 Hotels-inspired Forest Suite — cedarwood, vetiver, green leaves. 15ml ₹299.

If you want the wood warm rather than dry? The The St. Regis-inspired Old-World Glamour — amber and violet over the same woods.

What to run it in? A Sukoon at ₹1,899, or a Megh at ₹3,499 for a very large master. Five drops.
The short answer
Short answer: The woody pick for a master bedroom is the 1 Hotels-inspired Forest Suite (cedarwood · vetiver · green leaves). It is the driest and most structured wood in the range, and a large room is exactly where that pays — it has the density to reach the far side of a big room, and the space to separate into its three layers instead of arriving as one block.
The pick: Forest Suite for dry, green, architectural wood; Old-World Glamour (St. Regis-inspired) if you want the same woods warmed by amber; Quiet Luxury (Ritz-Carlton-inspired) if you want only a suggestion of cedar under something clean. All ₹299 in 15ml.
Shop: the Hotel Collection (from ₹299), the Sukoon (₹1,899) and the Megh (₹3,499).
Straight answer
What is the best woody hotel-inspired fragrance for a master bedroom?
1. The pick: 1 Hotels-inspired Forest Suite. Cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves. Cedar gives the dry pencil-shaving structure, vetiver gives the damp, earthy root underneath, and green leaves keep the whole thing from going dusty. In a master bedroom those three finally have space to arrive separately. 15ml ₹299.

2. The warm alternative: St. Regis-inspired Old-World Glamour. Amber, violet, woods. The same wood base seen through warmth rather than through green. Take this if your objection to woody scents is that they feel cold or masculine — the amber softens the whole reading without making it sweet.

3. The barely-woody one: Ritz-Carlton-inspired Quiet Luxury. White tea, bergamot, cedar. The cedar is a supporting note rather than the subject. Lovely, but in a large master bedroom it is a clean scent with a wood accent, not a woody scent — buy it knowing that.

4. The dose: five drops, and think about where. A master bedroom takes a drop or two more than a standard bedroom, and it also takes a decision most rooms do not: where in the room. A Sukoon (₹1,899) near the seating or dressing end of the room outperforms the same machine on a bedside table, because that is the end you are awake in.

5. What to avoid. Choosing a soft wood for a big room. Westin-inspired White Tea Serenity has cedar in it too, but it is a whisper under aloe and white tea, and in a large master bedroom that whisper simply does not travel. It is a fine bedroom scent and the wrong answer to this question.

TL;DR: buy the 1 Hotels-inspired Forest Suite (cedarwood · vetiver · green leaves) for a master bedroom, take the St. Regis-inspired Old-World Glamour if you want the wood warm rather than dry, and run five drops on a Sukoon (₹1,899).

The woody one, in three sizes
1 Hotels-inspired · Forest Suite From ₹299
Cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves — a water-based diffuser fragrance made to mist cleanly rather than clog the plate. 15ml ₹299 to test, 100ml ₹999 for the one you keep, 300ml ₹1,799 at about ₹6 a millilitre.

Why a woody scent needs a room this size

Woods are slow, dense materials. Cedarwood and vetiver sit low in the air and move sluggishly compared with a citrus or a tea note, which is exactly what makes them good in a bedroom and exactly what makes them difficult in a small one. In a compact room a serious wood has nowhere to go — it saturates the air within a few minutes, and because the individual notes never get any distance between them you smell all three at once as a single dense brown thing. People read that as heavy and conclude they dislike woody scents. Usually what they dislike is a woody scent in a room that could not hold it.

A master bedroom changes the physics. More volume means the notes separate, and separation is where a good wood earns its money. Cedar reaches you first because it is the lightest and driest of the three. Vetiver follows a beat behind, low and damp, doing the work that stops the blend smelling like sharpened pencils. The green leaves sit across the top and keep it alive. Standing at the door of a large room you get all of that as a sequence rather than a lump, and it reads as a place rather than as a product. This is also why sizing down the wood is the wrong response to a big room — a softer cedar does not fill the extra space, it simply vanishes into it, and you end up dosing a delicate scent at eight drops trying to hear it.

The three woody routes, and the master bedroom each suits

1
The 1 Hotels-inspired · Forest Suite
Dry, green, architectural — and the one to buy
1 Hotels-inspired Forest SuiteForest SuiteFrom ₹299Cedarwood · vetiver · green leaves. The most fully woody scent in the range and the only one that gets better as the room gets bigger. Cedar supplies the dry structure everyone recognises as wood. Vetiver is the reason this is not just another cedar scent — it is a root, not a timber, and it smells of damp earth and cold stone, which gives the blend a depth that reads as outdoors rather than as furniture. Green leaves keep the top from drying out. In a master bedroom it does something a small room never lets it do: it makes the room feel larger than it is, because the eye reads a scent with distance in it as space.
Buy this if: the room is large, you want a real wood rather than a wood accent, and you like a scent with no sweetness anywhere in it.
2
The St. Regis-inspired · Old-World Glamour
The wood, warmed
Amber · violet · woods. Same family, opposite temperature. Where Forest Suite reads as outdoor wood — bark, root, leaf — this one reads as indoor wood: polished, waxed, in a room with heavy curtains. The amber is doing the warming and the violet keeps that warmth from tipping into sweetness. In a large master bedroom the amber has a practical advantage too, because it is the slowest-moving material of the three and therefore the one that holds a big room longest. Choose between them on temperature: if your bedroom is cool and pale, Forest Suite; if it is warm and textured, this.
Buy this if: you find dry woods austere, the room has warm colours and heavy fabrics, and you want depth without a green edge.
3
The Ritz-Carlton-inspired · Quiet Luxury
Cedar as a detail, not a subject
White tea · bergamot · cedar. Worth naming in a woody guide precisely so you can decide against it on purpose. The cedar here is structural rather than expressive — it stops the white tea and bergamot floating away, and it gives the finish a slight dryness. What it does not do is make this a woody scent. In a master bedroom, and especially one with an en-suite, it is an excellent choice for other reasons: it handles soap and steam interference better than anything else in the range. But if you came here wanting wood, this will read as clean with a hint, and you will keep adding drops chasing something that is not in the bottle.
Buy this if: you want mostly clean with a dry finish, or the en-suite door stays open and soap smells are the real problem.

The woody scent matrix

Four of the seven have wood somewhere in the structure, but only two are genuinely woody scents. The table sorts them by how much of the wood you will actually smell in a large room — and a 15ml at ₹299 settles it faster than any table.

The scent, and the machines that cover a large bedroom
The SOSA principle
A wood in a small room is a smell. A wood in a large room is a place. The blend does not change — the distance between the notes does.
If a woody scent has ever felt heavy to you, check the room before you blame the bottle.

How much to use, and where in the room to put it

The range guidance is three to six drops, and a woody scent in a master bedroom sits at five. That is a genuine step up from the three to four a standard bedroom takes, and the reason is not that the scent is weaker — it is that dispersion falls off quickly with distance, and a master bedroom has a lot more distance in it. Five drops on a full tank is the number that gets cedar to the far wall. Six is for very large rooms or high ceilings. Above six you are no longer scenting a room, you are scenting the two metres around the machine, and the rest of the space is unchanged.

Placement matters more here than in any other bedroom, because a master is usually two rooms wearing one name. There is the sleeping end and there is the awake end — the chair, the wardrobe, the dressing table. Put the Sukoon at the awake end rather than beside the bed. Fragrance travels towards the bed on its own over the course of an hour, and putting the source where you are conscious means you get the good part of the curve while you are still there to enjoy it. If the room is long or L-shaped, a Boond at ₹899 in the dead corner running the same scent at three drops fixes it more cheaply than pushing the main machine harder.

Two practical points specific to woods. First, they are the slowest of all the families to clear from a tank — vetiver in particular clings — so rinse properly when you switch scents or your next white tea will come out muddy. Second, woods are the family where over-dosing does the least obvious damage in the first hour and the most by morning, because they accumulate rather than fade. Run 45 minutes in the evening and stop. And never put raw essential oil in an ultrasonic: it is too viscous to atomise and will coat the plate. The Hotel Collection is water-based for that reason.

Nobody dislikes cedar. They dislike cedar in a room that was never big enough to hear it properly.

Which diffuser to run it in

The scent sets the character; the machine decides whether the far end of the room gets any of it. In a master bedroom this is the decision people economise on and then regret.

Honest notes before you buy: these are ultrasonic, water-based fragrances — they add a little humidity to the room, which is welcome in a dry or heavily air-conditioned space and less so during a coastal monsoon. They are for SOSA ultrasonic diffusers (Boond, Sukoon, Megh) and are not for reed diffusers or for waterless nebulising machines like the Safar or Vaayu, which run neat oil. Use filtered water in hard-water areas, rinse the tank between scents, and keep the fragrance out of reach of children and pets — it is composed to IFRA standards for home diffusion, not for skin or ingestion. A note from Sonal

The complaint I hear about woody scents is almost always the same sentence: it was too much. When I ask where they were using it, the answer is almost always a small room. A wood does not become gentler when you use less of it in a space that cannot hold it — it just becomes a quieter version of the same crowding.

Vetiver is the material I fought hardest to keep in Forest Suite. It is unfashionable, it is difficult, and in the wrong dose it smells like wet soil. But it is the only thing that gives a cedar composition a bottom, and without a bottom a wood in a large room floats off at about the forty-minute mark. It is doing the work you notice least and would miss most.

Get the 15ml at ₹299 and try it in the actual master bedroom rather than in a shop or a hallway. Woods are the family most transformed by the room, and nothing I write here substitutes for that. A portion of what you spend funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best woody hotel-inspired fragrance for a master bedroom?
The 1 Hotels-inspired Forest Suite — cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves. It is the driest and most structured wood in the range, which is what a large room needs; softer woods vanish into the extra volume. 15ml ₹299, 100ml ₹999. Run five drops on a Sukoon at ₹1,899, six on a Megh at ₹3,499 if the room is very large.
Are woody scents too heavy for a bedroom?
In a small bedroom they can be, because the notes saturate the air before they have any distance to separate. In a master bedroom the opposite problem is more common — the wood is too polite for the space. If a woody scent has felt heavy to you before, try the same blend in a larger room at five drops before deciding the family is not for you.
How is this different from the woody pick for a standard bedroom?
Mostly by dose and by placement. A standard bedroom takes three to four drops with the diffuser near the bed. A master takes five, with the diffuser at the awake end of the room — near the chair, the wardrobe or the dressing table — because that is where you are when the scent is at its best. The blend itself does not need to change.
Should I run two diffusers in one master bedroom?
If the room is long, L-shaped, or opens into a dressing area without a door, yes. A Sukoon at ₹1,899 in the main space and a Boond at ₹899 in the far corner, both running the same scent at their own doses, covers the room better than one machine pushed to eight drops. Use the same scent in both — two different scents in one room read as a mistake.
Can I put cedarwood essential oil in the diffuser instead?
No. Neat essential oils are too viscous to atomise in an ultrasonic, they leave a film on the misting plate and they shorten the machine's life. The Hotel Collection is water-based and composed for ultrasonic diffusion, which is why five drops disperses across a large room instead of sitting on the surface of the water.
