Founder Diaries · Jewellery Store Scent Marketing
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles8 min readUpdated August 2026
The same machine, moved three metres, can transform its performance - placement is the cheapest upgrade in scent marketing and the most commonly botched. A jewellery store has a specific geography: the entrance plane, the display floor where customers drift, the consultation tables where they decide, the billing counter where the visit seals. Each zone has a placement answer, and together they form one map. Here it is, complete.
Quick answers — read this first
Where should a diffuser be placed in a jewellery store? By zone: the entrance machine sits to one side of the entry axis, one to three metres inside, elevated, with throw directed across the entry line (the customer walks through a scent plane); floor coverage comes from central-elevated placement - the unit high on a wall or shelf near the floor's midpoint, riding the AC's circulation for even distribution (the Vaayu Rs 11,999 covers ~1000 cubic metres from one good position); enclosed consultation rooms take their own small unit (Sukoon Rs 1,799) since closed doors block ambient coverage; and dead zones (deep corners, L-bends) are fixed by re-aiming or a Boond (Rs 799), never by raising the main unit's volume.
Should a diffuser be placed high or low in a shop? High, almost always: nebulised and mist output disperses best from elevation - particles drift down through the breathing zone, covering evenly - while floor-level units scent ankles and waste output on the first obstacle. The practical heights: above head height on a wall or high shelf for the main unit (also removing it from sightlines and curious hands), and never directly above open display cases (basic practice: keep any output from settling directly onto velvet trays - a metre of lateral offset is plenty). The exception: small enclosed rooms, where a table-level Sukoon works fine because the volume is tiny and the door does the containing.
How many diffusers does a typical jewellery store need? Most single-floor showrooms: one to three - one Vaayu (Rs 11,999) centrally placed covers the floor and entrance in most stores (its ~1000 cubic metre throw exceeds typical volumes); add a Sukoon (Rs 1,799) per enclosed consultation or bridal room (closed doors block ambient coverage); add a Boond (Rs 799) only for genuine dead zones a re-aim cannot fix. Multi-floor stores: one system per floor, or HVAC integration (Aangan Rs 25,999) once the building justifies it. The count discipline: fewer, better-placed machines beat many scattered ones - every added source is a calibration variable, and evenness comes from placement, not multiplication.
The short answer
Short answer: zone by zone: entrance - one side of the entry axis, 1-3m inside, elevated, throw across the line; floor - central-elevated, riding AC circulation for evenness (one Vaayu Rs 11,999 covers most single floors including the entrance); enclosed consultation rooms - own Sukoon (Rs 1,799) since doors block coverage; dead zones - re-aim first, Boond (Rs 799) second, never louder settings. Audit: fresh-nose walk door-to-farthest-counter for even legibility. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with a floor sketch.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for showrooms to ~1000m³; small-store systems from ₹1,799; HVAC from ₹25,999.

A jewellery purchase is one of the most emotional transactions in Indian retail - trust, celebration and aspiration in one visit. Scent marketing gives that visit a signature: one refined fragrance, held evenly across the showroom, running on a schedule no staff member has to remember. Customers experience it as "this store feels premium" - the exact feeling that precedes a high-value purchase.
The complete placement map, zone by zone. 1. The entrance plane. Machine to one side of the entry axis, one to three metres inside, elevated, throw across the entry line - the arriving customer crosses an established scent plane in her first steps, and the unit stays out of the door draft and the sightline. 2. The floor's centre of gravity. For even coverage, the main unit - the Vaayu (₹11,999) in most showrooms - goes central and high: a wall bracket or top shelf near the floor's midpoint, where its throw plus the AC's own circulation distribute one even register to every counter. In practice, entrance-forward-of-centre placement serves both zones one and two from a single machine in most single-floor stores. 3. The display-case rule. Keep direct output paths a metre laterally clear of open cases and velvet trays - not because fragrance harms inventory (ambient levels do not), but because basic practice keeps any settling particles off presentation surfaces: aim through walkways, not across open trays. 4. The consultation rooms. Closed doors block ambient coverage, and these rooms host the decisive hours - each enclosed bridal or private room takes its own Sukoon (₹1,799) at gentle setting: the same signature, locally deepened, controllable per session. 5. The dead-zone protocol. After one week, run the audit: fresh nose, walk from the street to the farthest counter, noting anywhere the note drops out - then fix in cost order: re-aim the main unit first (free, solves most), relocate it second (free), add a Boond (₹799) third - and never raise the main volume to chase a corner: that overdoses the centre to feed the edge. Send your floor sketch to +91 96192 18531 on WhatsApp and we will mark every position before you drill anything. Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: Vaayu central-high and entrance-forward (covers both zones), throw across walkways not open trays, a Sukoon per closed consultation room, dead zones fixed by re-aim then Boond - audited by a fresh-nose walk. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with a sketch.
The showroom standard most jewellery stores choose: the SOSA Vaayu - waterless cold-air scenting to ~1000m³, Bluetooth app and timer, one signature on schedule - at ₹11,999. Small-store systems from ₹1,799; flagship HVAC from ₹25,999. Or WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 for a free sizing consult.

The placement map
The three placement principles - elevation, circulation, and the enclosed-room exception.
Why this works
Placement is the cheapest upgrade in scenting - the store map, zone by zone
The showroom standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Small-store systems from ₹1,799.
Diffused fragrance is a dispersal problem, and elevation solves most of it: output released above head height spreads laterally before drifting down through the breathing zone - one source covering a wide even footprint - while floor-level release scents the first obstacle and stratifies low (customers breathe at 150-170cm; a unit at 40cm serves the display bases). Elevation's side benefits stack: the machine leaves the visual field (luxury interiors have no spare sightline for gadgets), leaves reach of children and curious hands, and clears the counter-height microclimates that AC vents and door drafts churn. The one elevation caution is the display-case offset - aim the descending plume through walkways, a metre laterally clear of open trays - which costs nothing at planning time and is the difference between professional and improvised placement.
Tip: output released high spreads wide and drifts down through breathing height - one source, even footprint, out of sight and reach.
2
The circulation principle
Let the AC do half the work
Every showroom already owns a distribution system: the air conditioning's circulation pattern - and placement that cooperates with it multiplies the machine: a unit positioned where the AC's return flow passes carries fragrance along the store's existing air highways, reaching depth no throw specification promises, while a unit fighting the pattern (output fired into a supply vent's blast, or parked in a still corner the circulation never visits) wastes half its work. Reading the pattern takes five minutes: an incense stick or thin ribbon at counter height maps the drift - place the machine upstream of the flow toward your priority zones. The corollary explains a classic failure: the beautiful corner unit in the circulation's dead pocket, scenting its own three metres while the store gets nothing - moved to the flow, the same machine transforms.
3
The enclosed-room exception
Doors defeat ambient coverage
The placement map's one hard boundary is the closed door: ambient floor coverage - however even - stops at it, and jewellery's most valuable conversations happen behind exactly those doors: the bridal consultation, the private client room, the high-value viewing. Each enclosed room is therefore its own scenting jurisdiction: a local unit (the Sukoon's 500ml format fits side tables and consoles), running the same signature at the room's own gentle calibration - deepenable for a long session, off when unused, always the identical register (a different scent behind the door splits the brand at its most memorable moment). The discipline that follows: count your closed doors when sizing the system - a showroom with three consultation rooms is a four-machine store however good the main unit - and budget the rooms first: they are where the lakhs decide.
Tip: ambient coverage stops at closed doors - and jewellery's most valuable conversations happen behind exactly those doors: budget the rooms first.
The SOSA principle
Placement is geometry plus circulation plus jurisdiction: elevate the source, cooperate with the AC's flow, and give every closed door its own gentle unit in the same signature.
The dispersal physics that favour height, the five-minute circulation map that multiplies the machine, and the enclosed rooms that decide the lakhs - the complete map, auditable by one fresh-nose walk.

Honest notes for jewellery retailers: scent marketing's effects on dwell time, perceived quality and recall are real but moderate - fragrance compounds a well-run store and rescues nothing; premises must be clean, cool and well ventilated first, because scent crowns good air and never substitutes for it. No fragrance harms jewellery: quality diffuser fragrance at ambient levels does not tarnish gold, diamonds or gemstones (silver tarnish is driven by sulphur and humidity, not diffuser oils - keep any machine's mist away from direct contact with open displays as basic practice). The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel or jewellery brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
Jewellery retailers understand atmosphere better than almost any other business - you light every display like a stage, you serve chai in good cups, you train your team to make a bride feel like the only customer in the store. And then, in most stores, the air itself is left to chance: the street, the incense stick, the phenyl from the morning mopping. The most emotional purchase your customer will make this year deserves better air than that.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian jewellery stores is the same architecture the global luxury houses use: one signature, sized to the showroom, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. The machines matter (throw, coverage, scheduling), but the strategy matters more, and it is in every guide we publish. If you want it applied to your specific store, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - I read the store descriptions myself.
Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
Can I just put the diffuser behind the billing counter where staff can watch it?
It is the most common placement in Indian stores and usually the worst: the billing counter sits at the floor's edge (coverage radiating into a wall), often under a staff fan or vent (output scattered), and the zone least needing reinforcement - by billing time the customer's impression is formed. The watchability concern is solved better by the app (the Vaayu's Bluetooth status replaces line-of-sight babysitting) and by the machine needing almost no watching (weeks per refill, timer-run). Give the machine the floor's centre of gravity and give the staff the app - the counter placement trades the store's scent map for a convenience nobody actually uses.
Our store is long and narrow - where does the machine go?
The corridor floor plan has a specific answer: place the main unit a third of the way in from the entrance, elevated, throw directed down the long axis - the geometry serves the entrance plane at near-full presence and pushes coverage down the tube (a central placement in a long-narrow store wastes half its throw into the side walls). Then audit the far third with the fresh-nose walk: deep corridors often need one small far-end unit (Boond Rs 799, or a second Sukoon) rather than a louder main - the two-source long-axis architecture holds even legibility without overdosing the front. If the narrow store also has a mezzanine, treat it as a separate floor. Send the dimensions to WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 - corridor stores are a two-minute placement consult.
Should the diffuser be near the gold counter or the diamond counter?
Neither specifically - and the question reveals a useful misconception: the system's goal is one even register across all counters (the signature is the store's, not a counter's), so the main unit serves the whole floor's geometry, not a VIP case. Where counter-level thinking does apply: the display-case offset rule (direct output paths a metre laterally clear of open trays - aim through walkways), and zone deepening by room, not counter (the enclosed diamond viewing room may run its Sukoon slightly fuller for long sessions - the same signature, deepened where decisions take hours). If one counter area genuinely reads flat on the audit walk, that is a dead-zone fix (re-aim first), not a counter preference.
Does ceiling height change the placement plan?
Meaningfully - height is volume, and volume is the sizing unit: standard commercial ceilings (10-12 ft) run the default map as described; double-height atriums and tall heritage spaces multiply the cubic metres the machine must fill (a 20 ft ceiling nearly doubles the volume of the same floor plate - check the Vaayu's ~1000m³ coverage against length x width x height, not square feet alone), and favour higher mounting (the taller the space, the more elevation pays); low mezzanines and basement floors (8 ft) reach evenness fast and need gentler settings to avoid overdose. The practical translation: measure height before buying, mount high in tall rooms, calibrate down in low ones - and for true atrium showrooms, the HVAC tier (Aangan Rs 25,999) often beats multiple standalone units.
How do I know my placement is right without expensive testing?
The audit is free and definitive - three tests, run with a fresh nose (arrive from outside, or after an hour away): the entry test (walk in naturally; first clear scent contact within one to two breaths - three means re-aim the entrance throw), the evenness walk (door to farthest counter at browsing pace; the note should stay legible throughout without any loud pocket - dropouts mark dead zones, loudness marks overdose or a too-close source), and the dwell test (stand at the main consultation position for five minutes; the note should be findable when sought but never pressing - this is where whisper calibration is judged). Run all three weekly for the first month, then monthly. Anything the tests flag, fix in cost order: re-aim, relocate, add small, and only ever last - adjust volume.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any jewellery brand's systems.
Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with longer dwell time, improved store and service evaluations, and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives unclean or poorly ventilated premises. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind luxury signature scents. Quality diffuser fragrance at ambient levels does not damage gold, diamonds or gemstones; silver tarnish is driven by sulphur compounds and humidity. SOSA systems: Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (Rs 1,799) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (Rs 3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from Rs 299; refills 100ml Rs 999); SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (Rs 25,999) and SOSA Meenar (Rs 38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively.
