Founder Diaries · Gifting · Instead of Chocolates
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated August 2026
A box of chocolates is treated as the lowest-effort gift in India and it is nothing of the sort. It is a gift that solves six hard problems at once: it is small enough not to embarrass anyone, it needs no size or measurement, it presumes almost nothing about taste, it gets used up, it is shared by a household, and everyone can read roughly what it cost. Most people who set out to stop giving chocolate replace the object and forget the job — and end up with a decorative something that has to be displayed, dusted and lived with forever.
Quick answers — read this first
The six jobs to replace: unembarrassing size, no measurements, no taste presumed, consumable, shared by the household, legible value. Score any swap against those six.

Non-food swaps that genuinely score well: good soap or a proper hand wash, a hand cream, a serious notebook and pen, a small plant in a decent pot, incense or dhoop for a household that already uses it, and home fragrance.

Swaps that quietly fail: mugs, photo frames, decorative brass, cushion covers, anything scented for the body, and anything that has to match a colour scheme. They all create a storage obligation or presume a taste.

Where chocolate still wins: a gift for a whole team that has to be divided, a gift for a child, a gift for somebody living in a hostel or a temporary room, and a gift for anyone who has said they dislike fragrance.
The short answer
Short answer: the best non-food replacement for a box of chocolates is a small consumable for the household — good soap, a hand cream, a plant, or home fragrance — because those are the only categories that keep chocolate's whole trick of being generous without being presumptuous. Avoid the reflex swap to a decorative object. A mug, a frame or a brass piece looks like more effort and costs the recipient shelf space for years.
Why it works: chocolate's real virtue is that it makes no claims. It does not tell somebody what to wear, what their house should look like, or how their body should smell. A room fragrance is the closest non-edible thing to that: it says you think their home deserves something good, and it makes no statement about them at all.
Shop: Morning Freshness at ₹749 is the smallest, least loaded thing in the range; Garden Bloom at ₹799 is the crowd-safe default; a duo set at ₹1,598 is what to send when the box you were replacing was a large one. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
What should you give instead of a box of chocolates?
1. Write down what the box was for. A thank-you to a neighbour is a different job from a Diwali gift to a client, which is different again from something you carry to a house you are visiting for dinner. The right swap depends on the job, not on the price.

2. Then match the six properties. Small enough that nobody feels indebted; no size, fit or colour to get wrong; no taste presumed; consumable, so it creates no storage debt; enjoyed by the household rather than one person; and obviously worth roughly what you spent. Chocolate scores on all six, which is exactly why it survives.

3. The non-fragrance swaps that hold up. A properly good soap or hand wash for the guest bathroom. A hand cream that is better than the one they buy. A serious notebook and a pen that writes — genuinely welcome for anybody who still writes things down. A small plant in a pot chosen with some care. For a household that already uses it, a good box of incense or dhoop. Each of these is small, consumable and undemanding.

4. The swaps that fail, and why. Mugs, photo frames, decorative brass, cushion covers, scented body products and anything that has to sit inside their colour scheme. All of them either presume a taste or hand the recipient a permanent object they now have to keep. A gift should not become an obligation with a dusting schedule.

5. Where home fragrance fits. It is the swap that keeps all six properties intact. A 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749–₹849 is roughly the size of gesture a good box of chocolates was, it is enjoyed by everyone who walks through the room, it needs nothing switched on, and it finishes in 6–8 weeks — 14–18 for a 130ml. It is also the rare fragrance gift that presumes nothing about the person, because it is aimed at their room and not at their body.

6. The honest exception. If you are thanking a whole team, or gifting a child, or the recipient lives in a hostel room or a shared PG, or has ever said they dislike scented things — buy the chocolates. They divide, and a bottle does not.

Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: chocolate's value is that it presumes nothing and leaves nothing behind. Replace that, not the box. Soap, hand cream, a good notebook, a plant or home fragrance all qualify; mugs, frames and decorative objects do not. Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, duos ₹1,498–₹1,598. Keep buying chocolate for teams, children and anyone who has said no to fragrance.
SOSA Morning Freshness Malabar lemon peppermint eucalyptus reed diffuser as a chocolate alternative gift
The same size of gesture, without the box
SOSA Morning Freshness · Malabar lemon, peppermint & Nilgiri eucalyptus ₹749 / 50ml
This is the bottle I reach for when the gift has to be small. Bright, cold and completely anti-floral — Malabar lemon over peppermint and Nilgiri eucalyptus — which means it carries none of the "I have decided what your home should smell like" weight that a heavy floral or a gourmand can. It suits a kitchen, a bathroom or a desk, the three rooms most people would like to smell better and never get round to fixing. 9.0 on SOSA's own internal strength scale at six reeds; 6–8 weeks on a 50ml, 130ml ₹1,249 for 14–18.

Part one — the three jobs people forget to replace

If you hand somebody a box of chocolates, nothing about the exchange is difficult. Nobody has to react in a particular way, nobody owes you anything, and the box has left the house within a fortnight. That ease is engineering, not luck. Three of the six jobs above are the ones almost every replacement gets wrong, and they are worth understanding before you spend anything, because they explain why the shelf of well-meant decorative gifts exists in every Indian home.

1
JOB ONE
It is small enough not to create a debt
A gift that is too large arrives with an invoice attached. The recipient begins calculating what they now owe you, and if they have nothing for you in return, the whole exchange becomes a small social problem you have created. Chocolate sits precisely under that line. Any replacement has to sit under it too, which is why the sensible band for a colleague, a neighbour or a teacher is a single well-made object rather than a hamper. A 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749–₹849 sits in the same register: unmistakably a proper gift, unmistakably not an obligation. Once you move up to a pair of 130ml bottles at ₹2,498–₹2,598 you are making a statement about the relationship, and that statement should be intentional.
The rule: for anyone outside your family, buy the version of the gift that cannot possibly embarrass them.
2
JOB TWO
It presumes nothing — no size, no colour, no opinion
SOSA Evening Calm lavender and chamomile reed diffuserEvening Calm₹799 · softestClothes presume a size. Jewellery presumes a style. Cushion covers, art and ceramics presume a palette you have probably never looked at properly. A worn perfume presumes something more intimate still — an opinion about how somebody's body ought to smell — which is why it is a fine gift from a spouse and an odd one from a manager. Chocolate presumes almost nothing, and that is its highest-value property. The reason home fragrance transfers so cleanly into this slot is that it moves the fragrance decision off the person and into a room. Nobody has to wear it, and nobody has to match anything to it. If you want the gentlest possible version, Evening Calm at ₹799 is deliberately the softest thing we make.
The tell: if the gift could be the wrong size, the wrong colour or the wrong opinion, it is a riskier gift than the box you were replacing.
3
JOB THREE
It disappears, and takes the obligation with it
The most underrated property of a consumable is the ending. A box of chocolates is finished, the box is thrown away, and nobody has to feel anything about it again. Give a decorative object instead and you have given somebody a small permanent responsibility: it has to be displayed when you visit, kept when they move, and dusted every week in between. Ninety per cent of the "why did they buy me this" drawer in an Indian home is objects that were bought as upgrades to a consumable. Slow consumables are the best of both — a reed diffuser runs 6–8 weeks on a 50ml and 14–18 on a 130ml, which is long enough to feel like a real gift and short enough that it releases the recipient at the end. Nothing to keep, nothing to store, nothing to be polite about in two years.

Part two — the popular swaps, scored honestly

Every one of these is a real gift that real people give instead of chocolates. Scored against the properties that made the chocolate work — and I have included where each one falls down, including my own category.

The swap scorecard
Does the replacement do chocolate's job?
The swap Small & unembarrassing? Presumes nothing? Ends by itself? Where it falls short
Home fragrance for a room ★ Yes, at ₹749–₹849 Yes — aimed at the room, not the person Yes — 6–8 or 14–18 weeks Cannot be divided among a group; wrong for anyone who dislikes scent
A good soap or hand wash Yes Mostly — scent is mild and washes off Yes Can read as a hint if the relationship is not warm
Hand cream Yes Mostly Yes Goes to one person, not the household
A small plant in a good pot Yes Yes No — it is a living commitment Needs light, water and somebody who wants the job
A notebook and a proper pen Yes Yes, for anyone who writes Slowly Useless to somebody who does everything on a phone
A mug, a frame, a decorative brass piece Yes No — it has to survive their taste No The single commonest failed swap; it becomes storage
A worn perfume or body mist Not always No — it is an opinion about their body Yes Too intimate for colleagues, in-laws and neighbours
The honest caveat: the top row loses to chocolate in three situations and I will not pretend otherwise — when the gift has to be split between several people, when the recipient is a child, and when the home already has a fragrance routine of its own. A reed diffuser cannot be shared out among a team, and it should not be added to a house that lights incense every morning.

Three swaps at three sizes of gesture
The SOSA principle
Replace the function, not the object.
The chocolate box was doing six quiet jobs. Anything that does five of them is a good swap; anything that does two of them is a decorative object with a bow on it.

Part three — where chocolate still wins, and when not to buy this

There are gifts I would not replace, and it is worth being blunt about them. The first is anything that has to be divided. A tin for a team of twelve, a box for a school staff room, something to leave at a security desk or with the housekeeping staff of a building — chocolate is unbeatable there, because it splits and a bottle does not. If you try to solve a group gift with home fragrance you either buy twelve bottles, which is a different budget entirely, or you buy one and create a small awkwardness about who takes it home. The second is a child. A reed diffuser is not a child's gift, and it needs to be kept out of reach of children and pets in any case.

The third is a person without a room to put it in — someone in a hostel, a shared PG, a bunk in staff accommodation, or anyone about to move cities. A room fragrance needs a surface and a bit of stability to be worth anything. The fourth, and the one I care most about: anybody who has ever said they do not like scented things. People say it about lifts, about cabs, about their neighbour's candles. Believe them the first time. A gift that quietly disagrees with something the recipient has already told you is an uncomfortable gift no matter how well it is made. The same goes for a house with a newborn, or where somebody gets headaches from fragrance, or where the morning already involves agarbatti and the whole flat is scented by nine o'clock. Those are all ordinary situations, and the right answer in every one of them is the soap, the plant or the notebook.

And a practical honesty about the swap itself: a bottle is heavier and more breakable than a box, so if you were counting on posting it to somebody, factor that in. SOSA does not sell a gift card, and I cannot confirm whether gift wrapping, gift notes or delivery straight to the recipient are currently offered — check at checkout rather than planning around a service I have not verified. What I can promise is what is in the box: a refillable glass bottle and six fibre reeds, and free shipping above ₹499.

The best thing about a box of chocolates is that it ends. Do not replace it with something that never will.

Part four — the swap edit, by the box you were going to buy

Chocolate gifting has three natural sizes: the small courtesy, the proper gift, and the large box you take to a house. Here is the non-food equivalent of each, with the two lines that are not gifts marked as such.

The chocolate-swap edit
Matched to the gesture, not just the price
The box you would have bought The non-food swap Price What it does better
A small courtesy box — a teacher, a neighbour, a colleague ★ Morning Freshness 50ml, the least loaded scent in the range ₹749 Lasts 6–8 weeks instead of an afternoon
The standard assorted box you keep for visits Garden Bloom or Evening Calm 50ml ₹799 Reads as chosen rather than kept in a cupboard
The nicer box you take to dinner Fresh Brew or Mountain Breeze 50ml ₹849 Warmth or dry woods — a character, not an assortment
The big premium box for close family A 130ml bottle, or a duo set for two rooms ₹1,249–₹1,598 14–18 weeks per bottle; the duo shows you pictured their home
A hamper for a household you know well A duo in 130ml ₹2,498–₹2,598 Generous without becoming an appliance or an heirloom
Not a swap: a tin for a whole team Keep buying chocolate — it divides, a bottle does not Honest limit of this category
Not a gift: an oil refill or a 15ml Hotel Collection bottle The refill needs a bottle they already own; the 15ml needs an ultrasonic machine ₹2,399 · ₹299 Excellent for owners, confusing as presents
Honest notes for buyers: there is no SOSA gift card, and this guide will not claim gift wrapping, gift notes or direct-to-recipient shipping — check the current options at checkout. What arrives is a refillable glass bottle with six fibre reeds. The compositions are alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, low-VOC and IFRA-compliant on a heat-stable coconut-derived CCT base, composed and handmade in small batches in Pune and tested through 45°C summers and 85% monsoon humidity. Any strength number quoted here is a position on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds, not an industry standard. Refills are oil only; replacement reeds are not sold separately, and the guidance is to refresh them every few months. The range has no oud, no musk-forward scent and no aquatic. Reed oil never goes into an ultrasonic machine and the water-based Hotel Collection never goes into a reed bottle. Stand the bottle on a tray — the oil marks wood and stone — and keep it away from children and pets. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Warmth and Bloom reed diffuser duo gift set
When you were going to buy the large box
SOSA Warmth & Bloom duo · Fresh Brew + Garden Bloom ₹1,598 / 2 × 50ml
The big premium chocolate box exists to say this is not a courtesy, this is for you. Two bottles do that more clearly than one larger one, because they show you thought about two different rooms: coffee and vanilla for the living room where people sit, rose and night jasmine for the entrance where they arrive. It is the hosting-and-entertaining version of this gift, and the pair share enough warmth that they do not fight if the flat is open-plan. ₹2,598 for the 2 × 130ml version, which runs 14–18 weeks a bottle.

A note from Sonal

For years I gave chocolates to everybody I could not think of a gift for, and I was faintly embarrassed about it. Then I started paying attention to what happened to the other gifts — the ones that took thought — and I noticed how many of them were still sitting on shelves, unused, being kept out of politeness. The chocolates had all been eaten and forgotten. Only one of those two outcomes is a success.

That changed how I think about what we sell. A reed diffuser is not a keepsake and I have no interest in pretending it is one. It is a glass bottle, six fibre reeds, and a composition that holds a room for six to eight weeks and then stops. The ending is not a limitation I am apologising for; it is the reason it is a good gift for somebody you do not know terribly well.

Where I would push back on my own category is the group gift. If you are thanking twelve people, buy the tin. If you are thanking one person and you would like their hallway to smell like something for the next two months, buy the bottle. Everything we make is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good non-food gift instead of chocolates?
A small consumable for the household: good soap or hand wash, a hand cream, a proper notebook and pen, a small plant, or home fragrance. All of them keep chocolate's key properties — small, undemanding, used up, no taste presumed. A 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749–₹849 sits at the same size of gesture and lasts 6–8 weeks.
Is a reed diffuser too personal a gift for a colleague?
No, and that is the useful distinction. A worn perfume implies an opinion about how someone's body should smell, which is why it is awkward between colleagues. A room fragrance implies only that you think their home deserves something good. Morning Freshness at ₹749 or Garden Bloom at ₹799 are the two I would send to a colleague.
What should I give a whole team instead of chocolates?
Honestly, chocolates. A gift for a group needs to divide, and a single bottle cannot. If the budget stretches to one gift per person then home fragrance works well, but do not buy one bottle for a shared office and expect it to feel fair to everybody.
Which is the safest scent if I have no idea what they like?
Garden Bloom at ₹799 — rose and night-blooming jasmine, which very few people actively dislike. If they are the sort of person who says they hate scented things, go to Mountain Breeze at ₹849 instead: dry pine, sage and cedar, with no sweetness in it.
Does it need any upkeep once they open it?
Very little, which is part of the case for it. Six fibre reeds go in the bottle, they get turned over about once a week with gloves on, and the bottle stands on a tray away from direct sun and out of a strong draught. No switch, no wax, no flame, nothing to plug in. A 50ml runs 6–8 weeks, a 130ml 14–18.
