Judge every format on one question: does it put water into the room? Start with the most popular category in India, the ultrasonic mist diffuser. A plate vibrates in a tank of water and throws a cool visible mist of water plus a water-based fragrance into the air. It is inexpensive, it looks lovely, and it is also, unavoidably, a small humidifier. In a dry room in December that is fine and sometimes welcome. In a room that already smells musty because the air and the materials are holding too much water, it is adding the exact cause of the smell. That is the system argument in full. Here is the limit of it: Fragrance does not remove odour molecules. It adds fragrance on top of them, so scent sprayed into a damp room gives you both smells at once, and the musty note usually wins because it keeps being produced. A diffuser is not an air purifier, it does not disinfect, kill mould or dehumidify, and it makes no health claim. Find the water, dry the material, clean what has grown, and scent afterwards. And the line I will not soften: if the smell is still there after the room has been properly dried, the soft things have been washed or sunned and the surfaces have been cleaned, stop shopping and start looking for a leak. Persistent musty smell in a dried, cleaned room means water is still arriving from somewhere - seepage through an outside wall, a terrace or balcony waterproofing failure, a bathroom or kitchen pipe leaking inside a wall, a blocked rainwater outlet, or rising damp at floor level. That is a building repair, and no fragrance product of any kind is a substitute for it.
