Why the most comfortable room is the least forgiving

Cozy neutral is a style built almost entirely out of soft material. Colour is doing very little work — the palette is oatmeal, cream, sand, camel, mushroom — so the interest has to come from texture, which means wool, boucle, linen, cotton, sheepskin, jute, and a great deal of it. All of those are porous. They take up fragrance molecules readily and release them slowly over hours. In a living room that is a pleasant property: the room keeps a low, coherent smell of itself between runs. In a bedroom it becomes the whole problem, because the bedroom is also closed, air-conditioned, and occupied by someone unconscious for eight hours. The two conditions compound rather than cancel. This is the single most absorbent room in most homes and simultaneously the one where over-dosing is least likely to be noticed in time.

The second thing worth understanding is that it is a commitment, not a setting. Because wool and linen store scent for weeks, a cozy neutral bedroom is very hard to change your mind about. Dose, timing, and a caution about the nightstand

Take one drop if the room has a rug, floor-length curtains, an upholstered headboard and a heavy duvet; two if it is a lighter version of the style. Run short and early.
