A candle has to be lit, and then watched, and then blown out. A wax melt needs a burner and a cube and twenty minutes. A machine needs a socket, water, an on switch and a refill. None of these is a flaw — for the right person the doing is the pleasure, and I will come back to that. But an attended gift has a hidden requirement attached: it needs a free evening and a certain frame of mind, and if those do not arrive, the gift sits on a shelf being a small reproach.

An unattended gift works from the moment it is put down. The reed diffuser is the only unattended object in this catalogue: you take the stopper out, you put six fibre reeds in, you place it near a doorway or on a console where air already moves, and then you do nothing for six to eight weeks. There is no flame, so it is safe in a house with a cat or a toddler. There is no socket, so it works in a corridor, a bathroom or a rented flat with two plug points. There is no sound. Six to eight weeks, no attention, no socket. The reed count is a volume dial: all six for a living room, three or four for a bedroom, two or three in a small bathroom, where a 50ml will run close to three months. Tell her that when you hand it over; it is the single most useful thing a recipient can know.

Buy this if: you want the gift to keep being a gift in November, and you will not be there to see whether she lit it.

The conditions are honest ones: it needs a socket or a USB port, it needs filling with water, it makes a small sound, and when the three included bottles run out she has to buy more — the Hotel Collection 15ml at ₹299 is exactly that refill, and it is useful to her only because she now owns the machine. Water-based oils cannot go in a reed diffuser and reed oil cannot go in a machine.

Buy this if: she likes gadgets, has a free socket in the room she wants scented, and does not mind refilling things.

OPTION THREE · THE CONSUMABLES

₹569 to ₹949 — candles, tapers and the 6ml attar

A woodenwick candle at ₹949 crackles as it burns, which is the one sensory thing a reed cannot offer. Taper candles, set of four, are ₹569 and are decor rather than fragrance. And the 6ml attar at ₹669–₹699 is the size at which an attar stops reading as a sampler and starts reading as a gift — Adaa ₹669, Ameeri ₹679, Mastani ₹685, Nawaab ₹699. Remember that an attar goes on the body, so it is only right for somebody you know well.

Buy these if: she is a person who lights things on purpose, or a person who wears fragrance rather than burns it.

Evening Calm or Garden Bloom — how to decide, and what not to decide it on

These two sit at the same price and are chosen for opposite reasons, so it is worth being precise. Evening Calm is the answer under uncertainty. It satisfies the four criteria that make a fragrance safe to give blind: low strength, low polarisation, room-agnostic, and no cultural or memory loading. Kashmir lavender with real chamomile underneath does not remind anybody of a specific occasion, does not read as festive or seasonal, and works equally well in a bedroom, a bathroom or a hallway. At 8.9 it is the softest thing we make, which matters because the failure mode of a gifted fragrance is almost never too faint. It is too much.

Garden Bloom is the answer under knowledge. British rose over night-blooming jasmine sambac with a soft musk drydown, and technically the most interesting bottle we make — the indole in the jasmine is held below the fecal threshold, which is what stops it turning animalic above 30°C the way cheap jasmine does in an Indian April. It is our most-gifted floral and the one people write in about. But it is emphatically not a blind buy, because disliking florals is a real, common and firmly held position, and no amount of technical quality rescues a rose in the home of somebody who does not want one.

What should not decide it is the fact that this page says "for her". A fragrance has a register, not a sex. Rose and jasmine are not female notes and cedar and pine are not male ones; the convention that sorts home fragrance by the recipient's gender is exactly the convention that produces gifts nobody wanted. Choose on what she likes and how much scent she wants in a room. Cold-pressed Malabar lemon over peppermint on a eucalyptus globulus base, and the entry point of the reed line at ₹749 — which is precisely why an under-₹500 page cannot honestly recommend one. The eucalyptus underneath slows the lemon's evaporation three to four times over, which is the reason it runs six to eight weeks rather than the fortnight a citrus diffuser usually manages. It is the one register that complements cooking rather than fighting it, so it belongs in a kitchen or a bathroom.
