Why the car? Because he does the driving, the fetching and the late-night pharmacy run, and the car becomes the one place he is alone for twenty minutes before coming in.
What should be avoided? Novelty dad items, anything needing assembly or configuring, and anything for the baby - he does not need another delivery to store.
He has become the outside-facing half
Watch a household in the second month after a first baby and a division appears that nobody planned and almost nobody names. One person is largely inside: with the baby, in a small number of rooms, on a schedule that is not theirs. The other person becomes the interface between that house and everything outside it. Who that is varies, but in most households in the first few months the father takes a large share of the outside function, and the shape of his days changes accordingly. He is driving - to the paediatrician, to collect a grandmother, to a pharmacy at eleven at night for something that has become urgent, to work and back with less sleep than he has ever had. He is carrying - shopping, bags, a car seat, a pram in and out of a boot. He is answering the door to visitors and managing the flow of people. He is doing the errands that nobody has time to think about until they are urgent. And in between, he is holding a baby at thirty centimetres in rooms where somebody is trying to sleep. That is the life a gift should be chosen against, and it is nothing like the greetings-card version of new fatherhood, which is why so many gifts for him miss. The other half of the diagnosis is that almost nobody buys him anything at all. That is not because people think less of him: it is that no retail category exists for fathers. Every shop for this occasion has a large baby section, a smaller mother section, and nothing addressed to him, so the purchase is never prompted. The gap is therefore enormous and unclaimed, and it can be filled for four hundred and forty-nine rupees. The car is the obvious answer and remains the most overlooked. It is where a large share of his week now physically happens, and it becomes something else too - the one place he is by himself for twenty minutes before coming in, and the place a baby who will not settle gets driven around at eleven at night. A hanging car perfume at four hundred and forty-nine to five hundred and nine rupees improves several hundred hours of his year for the price of a takeaway. Jasmine is four hundred and forty-nine, Lavender and Sandalwood four hundred and seventy-nine, Icy Mint four hundred and eighty-nine, Lemon four hundred and ninety-nine, Vetiver, Sea Breeze and Oud five hundred and nine. Two-piece combinations are eight hundred and ninety-nine to nine hundred and forty-nine - Jasmine with Lemon or Jasmine with Lavender at eight hundred and ninety-nine, Oud with Lemon or Sandalwood with Oud at nine hundred and forty-nine. If he already has a holder, 15ml refills are three hundred and ninety-nine to four hundred and forty-nine. A Mysore Orange Blossom car perfume spray is five hundred and forty-nine and a three-piece discovery set is six hundred and ninety-nine. At the premium end, the SOSA Safar at three thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees is a waterless car perfume diffuser and is a serious gift for a man about to spend an extraordinary number of hours driving; nebuliser refills are one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams and one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine for three hundred. The second place to aim is whatever he carries, and here the format matters more than the fragrance. A solid perfume at four hundred and fifty-nine to five hundred and forty-nine rupees is fifteen grams of alcohol-free balm in a flat compact, applied with a finger. It cannot spill into a bag or a glovebox. There is no cap to unscrew and lose in a car park in the dark. It survives months of being carried around. And it works with one hand, which matters far more now than it would have a year ago. Titan at five hundred is Arabica coffee, roasted wood, black pepper, frankincense and leather. Beast at five hundred and forty-nine is smoked whiskey, roasted coffee, spicy leather, amber resin and vanilla bark. Sway at four hundred and fifty-nine is dark cherry, espresso, cocoa, red patchouli and vanilla husk. Siren at four hundred and eighty-nine is black cherry, espresso, warm vanilla and cedar smoke. Sterling at four hundred and sixty-nine is coconut milk, almond nougat, white amber and powdered musk. An alcohol-free attar at three hundred and seventy-nine to three hundred and ninety-nine rupees is the quieter option and suits the period for a structural reason. It is undiluted perfume oil with no alcohol carrier, so it opens slowly and stays within an arm's length rather than projecting across a room - which is the right behaviour for somebody whose days are now spent in cars, corridors, waiting rooms and small rooms where a person is asleep. Nawaab at three hundred and ninety-nine is the most obviously masculine, a white oud composition built with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron rather than a dehn al oud distillate, and that is worth stating plainly. Ameeri at three hundred and eighty-five is Taif rose with Indian sandalwood. If he has worn the same designer fragrance for years and you would rather stay in that direction, the Inspired By range from five hundred and ninety-nine names its inspiration honestly rather than claiming to be the original - Tabac Noir for tobacco and vanilla, Samundar for aquatic and marine, Khayaal for sparkling bergamot and neroli, Zaffran for saffron with sweet amber. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any other house. Three things to avoid. The novelty dad genre - mugs, slogans, jokes about sleep - because it is a gift about the situation rather than to the person, and it needs a shelf in a flat that has none. Anything that is a project: a kit, a gadget to configure, something to assemble, because he has spent months assembling things and is behind on all of them. And anything for the baby, which is a delivery rather than a gift to him; SOSA makes no products for babies or children in any case, and nothing in this range is intended for a nursery, a cot, a pram or a child's belongings. One last note on timing, which runs opposite to the advice for the mother. For her, later is usually better - the wave stops at six weeks and a gift then has no competition. For him there is no wave to wait out, because almost nothing arrived in the first place. Any time works, and the first person to give him anything at all will be remembered for it.

Versailles
When somebody has a baby, the gifts arrive in a wave and almost every one of them is for the baby. Clothes the child outgrows in six weeks, toys for an age they have not reached, blankets in a cupboard that already has nine. It is all kind and it is all well meant. But two adults have just gone through something enormous, and by the end of the first month neither of them has received a single thing addressed to them.
That is the whole reason this section exists. We do not make anything for babies, and nothing we sell is meant for a nursery or for a child's things - we make fragrance for adults. What we can do is give somebody an answer when they say: everybody is buying for the baby, what do I give her, or him, or the two of them. Usually the answer is something small, consumable and completely undemanding, because a new parent has no free hands, no spare surface and no appetite for anything that needs setting up.
One honest thing. If the person you are buying for is pregnant, be careful with personal fragrance. A great many people find that what they want to be near changes during those months, and a bottle somebody cannot go near is a worse gift than nothing at all - so either choose something for their home or their car, or let them pick it themselves later. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 and tell us who the adult is and what you know about them, and we will tell you honestly if we think fragrance is the wrong call. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.
