One room, two jobs, and no wall between them

A great deal has been written about working from home and most of it addresses the wrong problem. The advice concerns discipline, routines, dressing properly and setting boundaries, all of which assume that the difficulty is the worker. It is usually the architecture. An office separates work from life by putting a commute between them, and the commute does an enormous amount of unnoticed work: it is a physical transition, it takes time, it happens twice, and it means the room you argue with a client in is not the room you eat dinner in.
