✓ Everything in this band clears free shipping above ₹499 — the shelf price is the price ✓ No reed below ₹749 and no machine below ₹899 — the bottom half of this band has neither ✓ 50ml lasts 6–8 weeks and is then finished, which is the point of a consumable gift

Founder Diaries · Diwali 2026 · ₹500 to ₹1,500
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 11 min read Updated August 2026
A price band looks like a smooth run of options and this one is not. There is a line through the middle of ₹500 to ₹1,000, and it sits at ₹749 — the price of the cheapest reed diffuser SOSA makes, and the point at which the whole character of the gift changes. Below it you are buying an object that somebody has to use. At and above it you are buying a room that has already changed, continuously, for six to eight weeks, without anyone doing anything. Everything useful about this band comes from knowing which side of that line you are shopping on.
Quick answers — read this first
Below the line (₹500–₹748): taper candles ₹569, Amber Rose 130g ₹599, jar candle two-pack ₹664, 6ml attars ₹669–₹699.

At the line: Morning Freshness 50ml ₹749 — the cheapest reed diffuser there is.

Above the line: Evening Calm ₹799 (the safest gift in the range), Garden Bloom ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849, Fresh Brew ₹849, the Boond machine ₹899, a woodenwick candle ₹949.

The honest gap: the bottom half of this band contains no reed diffuser and no machine, at any size. If a reed is what you pictured when you set the budget, the budget has to reach ₹749.
The short answer
Short answer: if your number can reach ₹749, buy a reed diffuser — Morning Freshness at the line itself, or Evening Calm at ₹799 if you would rather have the safest scent in the range than the cheapest bottle. If your number genuinely stops below ₹749, buy the jar candle two-pack at ₹664, which is the strongest thing in the lower half.
Why ₹749 is the line: it is the price of the cheapest SOSA reed diffuser, and there is nothing below it at any size. Below the line every gift here needs the recipient to do something — light it, wear it, set a table. At ₹749 that stops: six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, and six to eight weeks of continuous fragrance with no flame, no socket and no supervision.
One useful fact about this band: free shipping starts at ₹499, so everything between ₹500 and ₹1,000 ships free. The shelf price is the price, on both sides of the line — which is not true of the ₹379 single candle below this band. There is also no machine below ₹899, and the ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is a refill for one, never a standalone gift.
Straight answer
What is the best Diwali gift between ₹500 and ₹1,000?
1. Work out which side of ₹749 you are on, and everything else follows. That figure is the cheapest reed diffuser SOSA makes and there is nothing below it at any size. It is not a marketing threshold; it is where a particular kind of product becomes possible, and the band is genuinely two different shopping problems on either side of it.

2. If you can reach it, buy Evening Calm at ₹799. Fifty rupees above the floor and worth them: Kashmir lavender and chamomile at 8.9 on our strength scale, the softest thing we make, and the safest scent to give somebody whose taste you are guessing at. Morning Freshness at ₹749 is the cheaper choice and the better one if you are buying the same gift for several people.

3. If your number really does stop below ₹749, buy the candle two-pack at ₹664. Two 80g soy candles, none of the four scents carrying a printed message, roughly 30–36 hours of burn between them. It is a genuinely good gift and not a consolation prize — but it is a different category from what sits fifty rupees higher, and you should choose it deliberately rather than by accident.

4. Know what the lower half cannot give you. Between ₹500 and ₹748 there is no reed diffuser and no diffuser machine — the cheapest machine is the Boond at ₹899, at the top of the band. The ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is a water-based refill for that machine and does nothing without it, so it is never a standalone gift.

5. Everything in this band ships free. Free shipping begins at ₹499, so from the ₹569 tapers to the ₹949 woodenwick the shelf price is the whole price. That is worth knowing because it is not true just below the band: a single ₹379 jar candle does not clear the threshold, which quietly narrows the real gap between it and a ₹749 diffuser.

Six fibre reeds, refillable glass, alcohol-free and phthalate-free. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: the ₹500–₹1,000 band splits at ₹749. Below it, the best gift is the ₹664 candle two-pack. At and above it, the five reed diffusers — Morning Freshness ₹749, Evening Calm ₹799, Garden Bloom ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849, Fresh Brew ₹849 — plus the Boond machine at ₹899. Everything here ships free.
SOSA Morning Freshness Malabar lemon and mint reed diffuser
The threshold itself
Morning Freshness · 50ml ₹749
The cheapest reed diffuser SOSA makes, and the exact point at which this price band changes character. Cold-pressed Malabar lemon over peppermint, on a eucalyptus globulus base that slows the lemon's evaporation three to four times — which is why it runs six to eight weeks rather than the fortnight a cheap citrus gives you. 9.0 on the SOSA strength scale: bright without shouting, and the only one of the five I would put in a kitchen, because citrus complements cooking where a floral argues with it.

The two halves of ₹500 to ₹1,000, and what each one is for

Most budget guides treat a band as a list sorted by price. That is not how this one behaves, because the products in the lower half and the upper half are not competing with each other — they do different jobs, and the difference is not quality. The lower half sells events. The upper half sells continuity. Once you see it that way, choosing takes about a minute.

1
THE LOWER HALF · ₹500 TO ₹748
Things that happen, and then are over
SOSA Bookshop jar candleCandle two-pack₹664Everything in the lower half asks something of the recipient. Taper candles at ₹569 need a table being laid and an evening happening. The jar candle two-pack at ₹664 — Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings or Evening Walks, all message-free and therefore safe for a colleague or an in-law — needs lighting and watching. A 6ml attar at ₹669–₹699 needs a wrist. Amber Rose 130g at ₹599 sits in here too. None of this is a criticism: a candle is an event, it gets lit, it is noticed, and at a festival that is a real advantage over something that works quietly in the background.
Buy from here if: the gift should be used on the night, or in front of you, or by one specific person.
2
THE LINE · ₹749
Where the category changes
Morning Freshness reed diffuserMorning Freshness₹749₹749 is not a rounder number than ₹699 and it is not a positioning decision. It is what fifty millilitres of composed oil, six fibre reeds, a refillable glass bottle and a heat-stable CCT carrier cost to make properly, and there is nothing beneath it because the arithmetic does not allow one. What crossing it buys is a change in kind rather than in degree: a gift that requires nothing of the recipient at all. No flame, no supervision, no socket, no switch, nobody in the room. It runs through the festival and out the other side, and it is still working long after every other gift in the house has been eaten or put away.
The step is fifty rupees from ₹699. It is the largest change in what a gift is anywhere on the SOSA shelf.
3
THE UPPER HALF · ₹749 TO ₹1,000
Five reeds, one machine, one candle
Evening Calm reed diffuserEvening Calm₹799Above the line the whole reed range is available and the decision becomes a scent decision rather than a budget one. Evening Calm ₹799 is the safest thing to give blind at 8.9; Mountain Breeze ₹849 is the answer for someone impossible to buy for; Garden Bloom ₹799 only where you know flowers are welcome; Fresh Brew ₹849 is the deepest thing we make and the least safe blind buy. The Boond machine at ₹899 and a woodenwick candle at ₹949 take you to the ceiling.
Buy from here if: the gift should still be doing something long after the festival week, and you would rather it asked nothing of anybody.

What actually changes at ₹749, in practical terms

It is easy to state the threshold and harder to say why it matters, so here it is concretely. Below the line, the gift's usefulness depends on the recipient's attention. A candle is lit when somebody chooses to light it, which at Diwali means once or twice in a busy week and then perhaps not again for a month. An attar is worn when somebody remembers to wear it. These are perfectly good gifts, and their value is genuinely conditional on the recipient doing something.

Above the line, that condition disappears. Six fibre reeds go into the neck of the bottle and the object simply works — in an empty room, while the household is at work, during the week nobody has time to think about fragrance at all. Shreya P. in Chennai gave a 50ml as a housewarming gift to a friend who works from home; the friend went on to order three more for the rest of the house. That is not a story about a scent being beautiful, it is a story about a category: she noticed it because it was there constantly, not because she used it.

There is a second practical change, which is who the gift belongs to. A candle and an attar are used by a person; a reed diffuser is used by a room, and therefore by everyone in the household. For most Diwali gifting that is the better shape, because you are usually giving to a family rather than to an individual, and a gift the whole house benefits from is much harder to get wrong. Mihir T. in Pune keeps his in a home office; Meera D. in Delhi keeps hers by the bed and describes it as soft and gentle, just there in the background. Two very different rooms, one object, no adjustment needed.

The whole band in order of price, with the line marked

Everything SOSA sells between ₹500 and ₹1,000. The divider is the ₹749 floor, and the last row is the thing most often mistaken for an entry point into this category.

Either side of ₹749, and the safest thing above it
The SOSA principle
Below ₹749 a gift is used. At ₹749 a gift runs.
Which is why the only decision worth making inside this band is which side of that line you are on — the rest is choosing a scent, and that takes a minute.

Where sweets are still the right answer

Every page in this series carries this paragraph and I mean it every time. Mithai is a ritual before it is a gift. For a first visit to elders, for a household where sweets are the expected form the greeting takes, for the doorway moment whose entire point is to hand over something that will be opened and shared within the hour — sweets are correct, and a diffuser is a substitution nobody asked for. If you are walking into a family whose form you do not yet know, take the sweets. The gift is not the object; the gift is the observance.

The argument for fragrance is about the second, third and fourth house, and it is an argument about arrivals rather than about quality. A household receiving several boxes during the festival week has a distribution problem, not a gift, and yours will be indistinguishable in the pile. Fragrance is not duplicated at Diwali; it asks nothing dietary of anyone, which matters more than people admit in a country where a great many are managing sugar or dairy or nuts and none of them will say so at a doorway; and it is used by the whole household rather than by one person.

And the last honest note about this band specifically. A 50ml reed diffuser is finished in six to eight weeks, and occasionally somebody treats that as a weakness. It is not. A consumable ends and leaves nothing behind — no object to display, store, dust or feel obliged about — which is exactly what mithai does well too, and exactly what a decorative gift chosen by somebody else does badly. The difference is that six weeks is long enough to be noticed daily and short enough to leave cleanly. If they liked it, they buy the next one, and a great many do.

The useful thing about this band is not its ceiling. It is that a line runs through the middle of it at ₹749, and everything else is detail.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

What to buy in this band, in order — and the honest gap

In the order I would actually choose, with the gap last. The gap in this band is specific and easy to state: between ₹500 and ₹748 there is no reed diffuser and no diffuser machine at all, at any size. If a reed is what you had in mind when you set the number, the number has to reach ₹749, and no amount of looking will produce one below it.

The ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is a refill for an ultrasonic machine, never a standalone gift. There is also no gift set, gift box, gift wrap or gift note at any price Said plainly rather than worked around ₹749 / ₹899
Honest notes for buyers: the five reeds are alcohol-free, on a heat-stable CCT carrier rather than DPG, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant and 0 ppm formaldehyde, with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, climate-tested at 45°C and 85% relative humidity, and composed in Pune by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer. A 50ml lasts six to eight weeks and is then finished — a feature of a consumable gift rather than a flaw, and the reed count is a free volume dial that stretches it: three reeds in a bedroom, two or three in a small bathroom. Candle prices are whole rupees. Every SOSA spray is a car perfume rather than a room spray, and there is no oud, sandalwood, vetiver or amber reed diffuser, although the Smoked Oudh and Sandalwood jar candles at ₹449 do exist. Free shipping above ₹499, which the whole of this band clears. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Evening Calm · Kashmir lavender + chamomile ₹799
At 8.9 it is the softest scent in the range and the safest thing to give somebody whose taste you are guessing at — low strength, low polarisation, works in any room, and carries none of the associations that rose, jasmine, coffee and pine arrive with in an Indian home. Tara P. in Chennai gave one to a friend with a newborn, who described it as the one calm corner of the house. Six to eight weeks on the 50ml, or 130ml at ₹1,299 for fourteen to eighteen, above this band.

A note from Sonal

I am asked about this band more than any other, and almost always in the same shape: I have around seven hundred rupees a head, what do I do. The honest answer is that seven hundred and eight hundred rupees are not neighbours. ₹749 is where a 50ml of composed oil, six fibre reeds, a refillable glass bottle and a heat-stable CCT carrier can be made properly, and beneath that figure I would be selling you a thinner version of the same idea — the sort that goes bitter in a Delhi May, which is precisely the experience that makes people decide the whole category is a waste of money.

So I would rather draw the line clearly and let you choose a side. If the number cannot move, the ₹664 two-pack is a real gift and I would give it happily — two candles, no printed message, appropriate for anybody. If the number can move fifty or eighty-five rupees, it buys a different sort of object altogether, and I would take that trade every time.

And whichever side you land on, tell the person about the reeds. Three in a bedroom, six in a living room, flipped on a Sunday. It is free, it is the difference between lovely and too much, and almost nobody does it. Everything is composed in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Diwali gift between ₹500 and ₹1,000?
Evening Calm 50ml at ₹799 if the budget can pass ₹749, because it is the softest and safest scent in the range and needs nothing from the recipient. If it cannot, the jar candle two-pack at ₹664 is the strongest thing in the lower half of the band — two message-free 80g soy candles, appropriate for anybody.
Why does the ₹500–₹1,000 band split at ₹749?
Because ₹749 is the price of the cheapest reed diffuser SOSA makes and there is nothing below it at any size. Below the line every gift here needs the recipient to do something — light a candle, wear an attar, lay a table. At ₹749 that requirement disappears: six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, working continuously for six to eight weeks in an empty room.
Is there any reed diffuser or diffuser machine below ₹749?
No. The cheapest reed is Morning Freshness at ₹749 and the cheapest machine is the Boond at ₹899, so the lower half of this band has neither. The ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is sometimes mistaken for a cheap way in — it is a water-based refill for an ultrasonic machine and does nothing without one, which makes it a poor standalone gift.
Does everything in this price band ship free?
Yes. Free shipping starts at ₹499, so from the ₹569 taper candles to the ₹949 woodenwick the shelf price is the whole price. It is worth noting because it is not true just below the band: a single ₹379 jar candle does not clear the threshold, which makes the real distance between it and a ₹749 diffuser smaller than the two numbers suggest.
Is six to eight weeks long enough for a Diwali gift?
Yes, and for a gift I would call the ending a feature. A 50ml carries the recipient well past the end of the festival week and then finishes, so it never becomes an object they are obliged to keep, display or store. Using three reeds rather than six in a bedroom stretches it considerably, and the glass is refillable if they want to keep it going. A 130ml runs fourteen to eighteen weeks but starts at ₹1,249, above this band.
