Where SOSA crosses the line: ₹749 for a 50ml Morning Freshness reed diffuser — a weighted glass bottle with six fibre reeds that runs 6–8 weeks. That is the least expensive reed diffuser SOSA makes; nothing below it is a diffuser at all.
Below ₹749: jar candles ₹379 (about 15–18 hours), Sandalwood ₹449, wax melts ₹474 (they need a burner the recipient may not own), mugs ₹474, a ceramic trinket dish ₹664.
The arithmetic worth knowing: free shipping starts at ₹499. A ₹379 candle does not clear it. A ₹749 diffuser does. The real distance between those two gifts is therefore narrower than the price tags suggest.
2. Avoid categories the recipient can price to the rupee. Everyone in the room knows roughly what a box of sweets, a set of plates or a tray of dry fruit costs. That means your spend is legible on sight, and a modest budget is visible whether or not you wanted it to be. Fragrance is one of the categories where nobody performs that calculation.
3. SOSA's floor is ₹749 and I will not pretend otherwise. The least expensive reed diffuser we make is Morning Freshness 50ml at ₹749. There is no smaller size, no lighter version and nothing at ₹499 or ₹599 — anything cheaper on our store is a candle, a wax melt, a mug or a dish. If a site is offering you a reed diffuser at a third of that, look at what is in the bottle.
4. Under ₹749, buy a candle and know the condition attached. A jar candle at ₹379 gives roughly 15–18 hours; the Sandalwood jar is ₹449; a candle duo two-pack is ₹664 for about 30–36 hours. All of them need a household that lights candles. Wax melts at ₹474 need a burner the recipient may not own, which makes them the riskiest thing on the list.
5. Use the shipping arithmetic. Free shipping begins at ₹499. A ₹379 candle sits below it and a ₹749 diffuser sits above it, so the gap between the cheapest gift and the honest one is smaller in practice than the two numbers imply. That is worth knowing before you decide the diffuser is out of reach.
6. If four of you are going, pool it. One two-bottle duo at ₹1,548 from a group beats four separate small gifts, all of which will be duplicated by someone else in the room. It is also less to carry.
7. Do not buy a bigger bottle to look generous. A 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 lasts 14–18 weeks against 6–8. It is a longer gift, not a louder or grander one, and if the reason you are considering it is how it will look, buy the 50ml and spend the difference on nothing.

Part one — what "visibly cheap" is actually made of
I have watched a great many gifts change hands at Indian housewarmings, and the ones that read as thin have almost nothing in common price-wise. What they share is physical. Cheapness is legible through the hands and the eyes long before anyone thinks about money — it is weight, material, finish and the amount of printing on the outside. Understanding that is what lets a person with eight hundred rupees give something that sits comfortably next to a gift that cost three times as much, and it is also what stops a person with four times that from spending it badly.
Evening Calm₹799 · 50mlThis is the signal nobody names, and it is the important one. Every household in India can price a box of mithai, a set of plates, a tray of dry fruit or a mid-sized plant within about ten per cent, because they have bought all of those things themselves in the last year. Give from a price-legible category and your budget is on display whether you like it or not. Fragrance is not price-legible in the same way. Very few people have bought a reed diffuser for their own home, so there is no internal reference to compare against, and the object is judged on what it is rather than on what it cost. I am not suggesting you conceal your budget — I am pointing out that in some categories a modest spend is invisible and in others it is announced, and if you are anxious about looking cheap, that distinction is more useful than another two hundred rupees.Part two — the affordability ladder, band by band
Everything SOSA sells that could sensibly be a housewarming gift, arranged from the honest option downwards, with what each band buys and where it falls short. Prices are quoted in whole rupees — our store runs an automatic discount, so several of these display with a small decimal tail at checkout.
| Spend | What it buys at SOSA | How long it lasts | The condition attached | Clears ₹499 shipping |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹749 ★ | Morning Freshness 50ml — the least expensive reed diffuser we make | 6–8 weeks | None worth naming — no flame, no socket, nothing to operate | Yes |
| ₹799 | Garden Bloom or Evening Calm 50ml | 6–8 weeks | Bloom is the safe blind buy; Calm is the quietest and suits one small room | Yes |
| ₹849 | Mountain Breeze or Fresh Brew 50ml | 6–8 weeks | Fresh Brew is warm coffee-vanilla and polarising — not a blind buy | Yes |
| ₹664 | Candle duo two-pack, or the Cloud ceramic trinket dish | About 30–36 hours of burn, or indefinitely for the dish | Candles need lighting; a dish needs somewhere it belongs | Yes |
| ₹474–₹569 | Wax melts ₹474, Everyday mugs ₹474, ribbed and face mugs ₹569, bubble and taper candles | Varies | Wax melts need a burner the recipient may well not own | Yes at ₹569; ₹474 does not |
| ₹379–₹449 | Misty Mornings, Bookshop, Cozy Corner or Evening Walks jar candle ₹379 · Sandalwood ₹449 | Roughly 15–18 hours | Only works in a household that lights candles | No — shipping is payable |
| Below ₹379 | Nothing I would send to a housewarming. The only thing cheaper is the 15ml Hotel Collection at ₹299 | — | It is a refill for an ultrasonic machine. Without the machine it is useless | No |
| The honest caveat: ₹749 is a real floor, not a marketing one. SOSA does not make a smaller or cheaper reed diffuser and there is no sale version of one. If your budget genuinely stops below the ₹749 floor, buy the candle and let it be the candle — do not go looking for a diffuser at that price elsewhere, because what makes a reed diffuser last two months in a 45°C summer is what is in the bottle, and that is where the money goes. | ||||

Part three — when spending less is the right call
There is a version of this search where the reader is not short of money at all. They are afraid of being judged, and the fear pushes them upward — from a ₹799 bottle to a ₹1,598 duo, from a duo towards something grander still, on the theory that more spend buys more safety. It does not, and past a certain point it buys the opposite. A gift that is conspicuously larger than the relationship makes the room slightly awkward: the recipient feels indebted, and the other guests feel measured. For a colleague you know slightly, a neighbour you have met twice, or a cousin's flat you are visiting for the first time, one 50ml bottle at ₹749–₹849 is not the budget option. It is the correct one.
The duos exist for a genuinely different situation, and I want to describe them honestly rather than as a tier. Day & Night at ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded at ₹1,548 and Warmth & Bloom at ₹1,598 are two 50ml bottles bought together — not a hamper, not a gift set with a box and a ribbon. They make sense when the household has two rooms worth scenting, or when four colleagues are pooling rather than each carrying something small. They do not make sense as a way of looking generous, and if that is the only reason the duo is in your basket, take it out.
And the honest gap: if what you can spend is below the ₹749 floor, SOSA's answer is a candle, and a candle only works in a household where somebody lights candles. That is not a small condition. Plenty of Indian homes, especially homes with small children or with nobody in during the evening, simply do not. If that describes the household you are visiting, the truthful advice is to wait until you can spend ₹749, or to bring something from outside our shelf entirely. I would rather say that than sell you a ₹379 jar that ends up in a drawer, and it is worth remembering that free shipping starts at ₹499 — so the practical distance between the candle and the diffuser is narrower than the labels suggest.
Part four — what to spend, by relationship
The correct spend is a function of the relationship, not of the occasion. Here is how I would set it, with the SOSA option in each band and what happens if you overshoot.
| Relationship | Sensible spend | What I would send | What happens if you overshoot |
|---|---|---|---|
| A colleague or neighbour you know slightly ★ | ₹749–₹799 | Morning Freshness ₹749 or Garden Bloom ₹799 | They feel they owe you something, which is the opposite of a gift |
| A friend, one bedroom, living alone | ₹799–₹849 | Evening Calm ₹799 or Mountain Breeze ₹849 | A second bottle in a one-room flat has nowhere useful to stand |
| Close friends or family, a couple, two rooms | ₹1,498–₹1,598 | A two-bottle duo | Nothing much — but do not buy the duo for a studio flat |
| Four colleagues pooling into one gift | ₹1,498–₹1,598 | Fresh & Grounded duo ₹1,548 | Four separate small gifts is the worse outcome, not the safer one |
| A gift that should last past the season | ₹1,249–₹1,349 | Any scent in 130ml | It is not stronger than the 50ml — only longer. Buy it for duration or not at all |
| Budget stops below the ₹749 floor | ₹379–₹474 | Jar candle ₹379, Sandalwood ₹449 or an Everyday mug ₹474 | Not applicable — but check they are candle people first |
Versailles
People write to me apologising for their budget, which I find genuinely sad. A gift is not a bid. The person receiving it is not running a valuation, and if they are, no amount of spending is going to fix that relationship. What they are doing is picking the object up, looking at it, and deciding within a second or two whether it feels like something or like a formality — and that judgement is made on weight, material and finish, not on the receipt.
Which is why our floor is where it is. ₹749 is not a starting price designed to draw people in; it is what a 50ml bottle of a phthalate-free composition on a heat-stable base costs to make and sell honestly in India. I could put a smaller bottle out at ₹499 tomorrow and I have chosen not to, because a 30ml would run through in a month and the person who received it would conclude that reed diffusers do not last. That is a worse outcome for them than my not having a ₹499 product.
So the advice on this page is the advice I give friends. Spend what the relationship actually calls for. Put it into glass or ceramic rather than into packaging. And if the budget stops below ₹749, buy the candle without embarrassment — just check first that the house is one where candles get lit. Everything is made in Pune in small batches, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
