Founder Diaries · Home Fragrance · The Overlooked Layer
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
Every layer of a home that can be seen gets planned. Lighting has designers, joinery has drawings, textiles have swatches. The air has nothing: no drawing, no brief, no budget line. And yet it is what people describe first when they talk about a house afterwards. Here is why the most memorable layer is the one almost nobody plans.
Quick answers — read this first
Why is home fragrance so often overlooked? Three reasons. It does not photograph, so it never appears on a moodboard, in an interiors brief or on a set of drawings. People are nose-blind to their own homes within minutes of walking in, so the owner is the last person to notice what a house smells like. And it is sold as objects - candles, sprays, reeds, plug-ins - which keeps it occasional rather than continuous. A layer that is only present sometimes is not read as part of the home.

Why can I not smell my own home? Olfactory adaptation. The nose stops reporting a constant background smell after a few minutes, which is useful biologically and unhelpful domestically, because it means you cannot audit your own house. The practical test is to leave for a couple of hours, go for a walk, and come back in without stopping in the doorway. Whatever you notice in the first three seconds is what your guests smell all evening.

What is the difference between a candle and a scent machine? A candle is an event and a machine is a layer. A candle scents one room while you are in it and needs lighting, watching and extinguishing, with a scent throw that rises and falls. A machine runs continuously at a low level across a whole home, on a schedule, whether or not anyone is there. A SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, holds 400ml lasting up to about 75 days and runs under 38dB.
The short answer
Short answer: because it cannot be photographed, cannot be audited by the person who lives there, and is sold as objects rather than as a system. Those three things keep scent occasional, and occasional never reads as part of a home. Making it continuous and low-level from one machine is what changes it. A SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers about 2,000-3,000 sq ft.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999), run at low intensity on a daily schedule so the fragrance becomes a background rather than an event - waterless, under 38dB, 400ml lasting up to about 75 days.
Next step: if you want a second nose on your home, tell us the layout and how it is used - ask us what fits your home.
Three reasons the air is missing from almost every home planIt does not photograph, so it never reaches a moodboardYou are nose-blind to your own home within minutesIt is sold as objects: candles, sprays, reeds, plug-insSo it stays occasional, and occasional is not a layerThe fix: continuous and low - SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999
Every other layer in a home can be seen in a photograph, which is exactly why it gets planned. Air is the only one that has to be remembered on purpose.
The machine behind the layer - tap for the specification
Straight answer
Why do people skip fragrance when they think about a luxury home?
There are three specific reasons, and they compound. First, it does not photograph. Home taste is transmitted almost entirely through images now, and images cannot carry smell, so scent never reaches a moodboard, a Pinterest board, an interiors brief or a set of drawings. Nobody has ever been asked to specify it, so nobody specifies it. Second, you cannot audit your own home. The nose adapts to a constant background within minutes, which is why the person who lives somewhere is the last to know what it smells like. Every strong domestic smell - the kitchen, the pets, the damp cupboard, the laundry - is invisible to the household and obvious to a visitor in the first three seconds. That asymmetry means the problem never presents itself to the person who could fix it. Third, it is sold as objects rather than as a system. Candles, sprays, reeds and plug-ins are all things you buy, use, forget and replace. Each of them produces a peak and then a decline. The result is that a home smells strongly of something on a Saturday evening and of nothing on a Wednesday morning, and a layer that is only present sometimes never becomes part of how the house is read. Put those three together and you get the situation almost every well-designed home is in: seven layers planned in detail and the eighth left entirely to chance. What changes it is treating scent the way you treat light, as a continuous condition rather than an occasional object. Low level, same fragrance, running through ordinary days, from a single source so the whole home matches. That is one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999): rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, so it covers a flat or a floor rather than a room; waterless, with no dampness and no residue near books, art or textiles; under 38dB and 5W; a 400ml tank lasting up to about 75 days; and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers so it runs while the house is empty and is right when you walk in. And the necessary caveat, which is also the reason this layer gets a bad name: scent belongs on top of an aired and cleaned home. It cannot cover cooking, damp or pet odour, it is not an air purifier, and layering it over a smell with a source gives you both at once.
Scent is skipped because it cannot be photographed, cannot be smelled by the person who lives there, and is sold as objects. Fix the third one and the first two stop mattering.
Turning the overlooked layer into a planned one takes one machine: SOSA Vaayu - continuous rather than occasional, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, rated to 1000m³ (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), waterless, under 38dB, 400ml lasting up to 75 days.

Three reasons the air never makes the list

Three reasons the air gets left out, and what each one implies about how to put it back in.

1
It does not photograph
So it never reaches a moodboard, a brief or a budget
Interiors are chosen, discussed and copied through images. Everything that can be pictured gets a plan: lighting layouts, joinery drawings, fabric swatches, paint samples. Smell has no visual equivalent, so it never enters the process, and there is no stage of any renovation at which somebody asks what the house should smell like. The implication is simple: because it will not arrive on its own, it has to be added deliberately, as its own decision, usually after everything else is finished.
Tip: add it to the plan explicitly, or it will not happen. No image will remind you.

One machine is the whole specification: the Vaayu covers a floor from a single point.

2
You are nose-blind to your own home
The person who could fix it is the one who cannot smell it
Olfactory adaptation means your nose stops reporting a constant smell within minutes. It is why you cannot tell whether your home smells of last night's cooking, of the dog, of a damp cupboard or of nothing at all, while a visitor knows within three seconds. The test that works: leave the house for two hours, walk somewhere with different air, then come back in and pay attention to the first breath before you put your bag down. Better still, ask someone who does not live there and make it easy for them to be honest.
SOSA Vaayu
Consistency solves what a nose cannot audit: the same fragrance at the same level every day.

3
It is sold as objects, not as a layer
Candles, sprays and reeds keep scent occasional
Every scented object has the same shape of behaviour: a peak when it is new or lit, a decline, then nothing. Reeds fade so slowly that you stop registering them long before they are empty. Sprays are a burst that is gone in an hour. Candles need you present and only reach one room. None of them is capable of producing the thing you actually want, which is a low, unchanging background that is there on an ordinary Wednesday morning when nobody is trying. That requires a machine, running on a schedule, at an intensity low enough that you notice it only in memory.
Tip: aim for barely perceptible at the door and unmistakable in memory. That is the level.
SOSA Vaayu
1h, 4h, 8h and 24h timers, adjustable intensity, waterless, under 38dB, up to 75 days per fill.

The SOSA principle
Every other layer of a home announces itself. Furniture arrives in a van, paint changes overnight, lighting is a decision with a switch. Air is the only layer that is entirely absent from the plan and entirely present in the memory.
Which is why the homes people describe as unforgettable are usually the ones where somebody thought about it on purpose.
SOSA Vaayu
The layer nobody drew: SOSA Vaayu, waterless, 1000m³ (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml up to 75 days, under 38dB. ₹11,999.

What changes when scent stops being an object

The argument in one table: why it gets skipped, and what to do about each reason.

The SOSA plan
Why it gets overlooked, and the fix
Why it is skipped What to do instead
It cannot be photographed, so it never reaches a moodboard or a brief
Add it as an explicit line in the plan, after the visual work is done. Nothing visual will ever remind you to.
You are nose-blind to your own home within minutes
Leave for two hours and come back in, paying attention to the first breath. Or ask a visitor and make honesty easy.
It is sold as objects that peak and fade
Stop buying scented things per room. Choose one fragrance from one source and keep it at a constant low level.
SOSA VaayuSo it stays occasional, and occasional is never read as part of the home
Automate it. One SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers about 2,000-3,000 sq ft on 1h/4h/8h/24h timers at under 38dB. View →

If you take the argument seriously, the practical consequence is that you buy fewer scented things, not more. One fragrance, one machine, one level, and the candles become an occasional pleasure rather than the system. On choice of profile, restrained and dry outlasts sweet: sweetness announces itself as a product, while a clean woody or tea-like profile reads as the building. The direct version of the question this piece dances around is answered honestly here: can a signature scent actually make your home feel more luxurious. For the full list of home layers, read how to make your home feel more expensive.

People remember two things about a house they visited once: how it felt to walk in, and how it smelled. Only one of those ever appears on a drawing.

One practical thing before you decide: do the nose-blind test first. Leave the house for two hours, come back in and notice the first breath. If what you smell has a source - cooking, a drain, a wardrobe, a pet bed, damp - that is a cleaning and ventilation job and no fragrance will fix it. Scent works alongside airing and cleaning, never instead of them, and it is not an air purifier. Once the base is clean, a continuous low-level layer is the change people notice without being able to name. For help placing it, ask us what fits your home.

A note from Sonal

I have sat in a lot of design conversations and I have never once heard someone ask what a house should smell like. Lighting gets a consultant. Joinery gets drawings. Fabric gets swatches pinned to a board. The air gets nothing, not because anyone decided against it, but because it cannot be photographed and our entire way of choosing homes now runs through pictures.

The second reason is more interesting to me as a perfumer: you cannot smell your own home. The nose reports change, not constants, so within minutes of walking in your own house becomes olfactorily invisible to you. That is why the person best placed to fix it is the one least able to notice it, and why so many otherwise immaculate homes have a smell the owners genuinely do not know about. Consistency is the answer to a sense you cannot audit. One SOSA Vaayu, one fragrance, one level, running on a schedule.

And the honesty that keeps this from being a sales pitch: a scent layer belongs on top of a clean, aired home and nowhere else. If the first breath when you walk back in is cooking, damp, a pet bed or a musty wardrobe, that is ventilation and cleaning, not fragrance, and adding scent gives you both smells at once. It is not an air purifier and I make no health claim for it. Our hotel-inspired fragrances are our own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Why is fragrance overlooked in luxury home design?
Because it cannot be photographed, so it never enters a moodboard, a brief or a set of drawings; because people are nose-blind to their own homes and so never audit it; and because it is sold as objects such as candles and reeds, which keeps it occasional. A layer that is present only sometimes is not read as part of the house, which is why it stays missing from otherwise complete homes.
Why can I not smell my own house?
The nose adapts to constant smells within minutes and stops reporting them, which is why visitors notice what you cannot. To test your own home, leave for a couple of hours, walk somewhere with different air, then come back in and pay attention to the very first breath before you put anything down. Whatever you notice in those three seconds is what a guest smells all evening.
Is a scent machine better than candles and reed diffusers?
It does a different job. Candles are an event for one room while you are in it, and reeds fade so gradually that you stop noticing them. A machine is a background layer: continuous, low, the same in every room and running whether or not anyone is home. A SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) covers about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft, holds 400ml lasting up to about 75 days and runs under 38dB. Most people keep candles for occasions and let the machine do the everyday.
Will fragrance make my home smell clean if I am behind on cleaning?
No. Fragrance sits on top of whatever is already there, so scent over cooking smells, damp, pet odour or a musty cupboard gives you both at once, which is worse than either. Deal with the source, air the house properly, then add the scent layer. Fragrance is not an air purifier and makes no health claim.
How much fragrance does a home actually need?
Much less than most people use. The target is barely perceptible when you walk in and unmistakable when you remember the house later. That means a low intensity running for long hours rather than a strong setting before guests. It also uses less oil: a 400ml tank in a SOSA Vaayu lasts up to about 75 days depending on intensity and run hours.
