Why does my house still smell stale even though I have just cleaned it?
Because the cleaning you did and the smell you can smell are in two different places. A weekly clean is a hard-surface clean: floors, counters, bathrooms, the visible dust. Household smell is overwhelmingly a soft-surface problem. Every time you fry, aerosolised cooking oil travels and lands, and the things it lands on are curtains, sofa upholstery, cushion covers, rugs, bed linen and the fabric-covered dining chairs. Body odour, hair oil and skin oil go into mattresses, pillows and pillow protectors, which is why bedrooms smell strongest at nine in the morning after being closed all night. None of those get washed weekly, so the smell resets itself every time the fabric warms up. Then there is water, which is the second family of causes. Wet mopping puts a film of water on the floor and briefly raises humidity; the mop head itself, wrung out and left in a dark utility corner, sours within a day and you then wipe it across the whole house every morning. Every stubborn household smell I have been asked about in eight years has been one of three things. Work through them in this order and you will find yours, usually within an afternoon and usually for free.

The house is clean by surface, not by textile
Curtains, upholstery, cushions, rugs, mattresses and pillows
Cooking oil aerosolises, travels and lands on fabric, and fabric holds it for months. Press your face into the living room curtain and the sofa arm and you will usually find your answer in ten seconds. Curtains want washing or dry cleaning two or three times a year, cushion covers monthly, rugs vacuumed on both sides and aired in sun. Mattresses and pillows are the ones nobody thinks about: pillows should be washed or replaced roughly every six months, mattress protectors washed monthly, and the mattress itself vacuumed and stood on its side near an open window for a few hours twice a year. A bedroom that smells strongest first thing in the morning is telling you about the bed, not the room.

Water is being added faster than it leaves
Wet mopping, the mop head, indoor laundry and the washing machine
A damp mop head left in a bucket in a dark utility area sours within about a day, and every morning you spread it across the entire floor of the house. Wash mop heads weekly, wring them hard, and dry them in sun or at least in moving air. Wet-mop with less water and let floors dry with a window open rather than under a closed AC. Laundry dried indoors is several litres of water going into your rooms; if you must dry indoors, do it in one room with the window cracked and the door shut, not spread across the living room. Traps, boxes and no air exchange
Drains, the bin, the fridge, wardrobes, the shoe cabinet and a sealed flat
A floor trap in a guest bathroom nobody uses dries out in a week or two, and once the water seal is gone the drain vents back into the room. Pour a mug of water down every unused basin, floor drain and bathroom weekly. Line and empty the kitchen bin daily and wash the bin itself, because the smell is usually the container and not the contents. Clean the sink drain and the strainer. The fridge wants a weekly look at the vegetable drawer and an open box of baking soda. Wardrobes and cupboards on outside walls hold humidity: open them for an hour when you air the house, keep clothes fully dry before folding, and never store shoes inside them. The most common message I get is some version of this: I clean constantly, the house looks spotless, and it still does not smell fresh. It is a frustrating thing to live with, partly because it feels like a judgement on how you keep your home. It usually is not. It is a mismatch between where cleaning happens and where smell lives.
Cleaning happens on hard surfaces. Smell lives in soft ones, in water that has not dried, and in the four or five sealed boxes in every house that nobody opens. When someone sends me a photograph of their living room, the first things I look at are the curtains, the sofa, whether laundry is drying indoors, and how many windows actually open.
