Damp material supports mould, mildew and bacteria, and what reaches your nose is the volatile compounds those organisms release as they feed on cotton, paper, leather, wood, foam and dust. That is why the smell is organic and cellar-like rather than simply wet, and it is why the only real fix is to find the moisture and take it away. Dry material does not smell musty. So the question is never really about smell, it is about water, and in an Indian monsoon the water arrives in five ways. The first is the building envelope. Outside walls take days of driven rain and pass moisture inward, terraces and balconies leak where the waterproofing has aged, and window reveals wick water in around the frame. This is why one bedroom on the weather side of the flat smells and the rest do not, and why the wall behind a wardrobe or a headboard is such a common culprit: it is the coolest, least ventilated surface in the room. The second is an actual leak: a bathroom or kitchen pipe weeping inside a wall, a blocked rainwater outlet backing up, a chajja or terrace drain that has silted over. A leak does not care about the weather forecast, so if the damp patch never dries even in a clear week, it is plumbing rather than seasonal. Is water coming into the building?
Seepage, terrace and balcony failures, and leaks inside walls
Walk the house with the windows shut and follow the smell, because it is always strongest where the growth is. Then put your hand flat on the outside walls, especially behind wardrobes, headboards and any furniture pushed tight to a wall, and feel for a patch that is cooler and slightly clammy compared with the rest. Look for blistered, chalky or powdery paint, dark tide lines rising from the skirting, swollen door frames and lifting laminate. Check the ceiling below a terrace, a balcony and any upstairs bathroom. Look under every sink and behind the washing machine. A patch that dries out in a clear week is seasonal seepage through the envelope, which needs external waterproofing before the next season. A patch that never dries is a leak, and that is a plumber this week, not a diffuser.

How much water are you adding yourself?
Laundry indoors, wet mopping, showers, cooking, closed windows
This is the one people underestimate, and it is entirely within your control. A single load of washing dried on a rack indoors releases roughly two litres of water into the air of the house as it dries, and in the rains most Indian homes are drying two loads a day in a closed room. Wet mopping the floors twice a day adds more, and if the windows are shut against the rain none of it leaves. Showers without a working exhaust fan, pressure cooking without the chimney on, and kettles all contribute. The fix is boring and it works: dry laundry in the most ventilated place you have with a fan on it or a dehumidifier in the room with the door shut, damp mop rather than wet mop and let the floor dry with fans running, run the bathroom exhaust for twenty minutes after every shower, and use the kitchen chimney every time you cook. Where the house genuinely needs one, a dehumidifier or the air conditioner's dry mode for an hour or two a day does more for a musty flat than anything else you can buy.

What is holding the damp, and what has grown on it?
Mattresses, cushions, wardrobes, leather, paper and rugs
Air dries fast; material does not. A mattress, a sofa cushion, a rolled rug, a wardrobe packed to the door with cotton, a stack of books and a shelf of leather bags all hold moisture for days after the air itself has dried, and that is where the growth actually happens. Strip the beds and stand the mattresses on edge in moving air, prop the cushions up, unroll and dry the rugs, take a third of the clothes out of every packed wardrobe so air can move between them, pull furniture a few inches off outside walls, and get shoes, bags and books out of dark closed corners. Sunlight where you can get it, moving air where you cannot. Where mould is already visible, deal with it properly rather than perfuming over it. Wipe hard surfaces with a proper cleaner or a dilute bleach solution rather than a dry brush, which just throws spores into the air, ventilate while you work, wear gloves, dry the surface completely afterwards and then keep it dry. Anything soft and badly affected - a foam cushion, a mattress topper, a cheap chipboard back panel - is often cheaper to replace than to rescue. A large or recurring patch is a job for a professional, and it is a signal that the wall behind it is wet.

Every July my inbox fills with the same message. The house is clean, we mop every day, we have tried three sprays, and the cupboards still smell like a cellar. It is never a housekeeping failure. Why is an ultrasonic diffuser the wrong choice in a damp room?
Because an ultrasonic diffuser works by misting water. A plate vibrates in a tank and throws water plus a water-based fragrance into the room, which makes it a small humidifier as well as a diffuser. In monsoon weather, in a room that smells musty because there is already too much moisture in the air and in the materials, that is adding the very thing causing the smell. Then stop shopping and look for a leak. A musty smell that survives proper drying, washing and cleaning means water is still arriving from somewhere: seepage through an outside wall, failed terrace or balcony waterproofing, a pipe leaking inside a wall, a blocked rainwater outlet, or rising damp at floor level. Look for cool patches, blistered or chalky paint, dark tide lines, lifting skirting and swollen wood, and get the source repaired. That is a building problem and no fragrance product fixes it.

Air movement and dehumidification, in that order, plus source control. Run ceiling fans even with the windows shut so the air is not sitting still, run bathroom and kitchen exhausts every time and for twenty minutes afterwards, stop drying laundry in a closed room, damp mop instead of wet mopping, pull furniture and wardrobes a few inches off outside walls, and where the house needs one, run a dehumidifier or the air conditioner's dry mode for an hour or two a day. Fragrance comes after all of that and does not replace any of it.
