Two things, and neither of them is dirt. The first is textile load. Fabric is the most absorbent thing in your home and it is the least frequently cleaned. A mattress takes years of body oil, sweat and skin; pillows take the most of all and should be washed or replaced roughly every six months; sofa upholstery and cushion covers take the same from every person who sits down; curtains take aerosolised cooking oil from the kitchen and traffic dust from an open window; and rugs take everything that lands on them plus whatever the shoes brought in. None of this is visible. All of it warms up during the day and releases. That is why a bedroom smells strongest at nine in the morning and a sitting room smells strongest at four in the afternoon in summer. The second is still air. A modern flat is sealed for air-conditioning, which means it has very little air exchange, and the closed volumes inside it have none at all: wardrobes, particularly against an outside wall where condensation collects, the store room, the shoe cabinet, the guest bedroom nobody opens and the space behind a heavy headboard. Open every closed box
Wardrobes, store rooms, shoe cabinets, unused bedrooms
Air inside a closed cupboard does not move at all, and a wardrobe built against an outside wall collects condensation on the back panel through winter and monsoon, which is where that soft musty note comes from. Once a week, when you air the house, open the wardrobes and cupboards too and let air cross them for an hour. Never put anything away damp, including clothes that felt dry off an indoor drying rack. Change the air, not the air freshener
Twenty minutes of cross-ventilation a day
This is the single highest-value habit in this entire cluster and it costs nothing. Open two windows on opposite sides of the home so air actually crosses, rather than one window which mostly does nothing. Twenty minutes in the morning is enough in most Indian cities; do it early before the outside air heats up, and in high-pollution months use whatever window is on the quieter side and keep it shorter. Telling them apart takes one test: open two windows on opposite sides for twenty minutes. If the smell lifts and comes back slowly over a day, it is stale. If it barely moves, it is damp and you have a different job on your hands.
For a stale house the work is unglamorous and it is free. Wash the pillows. Wash the cushion covers. Get the curtains cleaned. Open the wardrobes. Air the guest room nobody uses. Do that once properly and set it on a rotation, and the difference is not subtle.
