Most of what goes wrong with a commercial scenting purchase was decided before anyone chose a fragrance, in a conversation where the buyer asked about price and the supplier answered about square feet. This is the list I would want you to work through, and I have run SOSA's own machine down it including the item where the answer is not good enough yet.
Quick answers — read this first
What should I ask before buying a commercial scent machine? Ten things, and the first one settles most arguments: what is the coverage in cubic metres? A supplier who answers in square feet has silently assumed a ceiling height for your building - which in a kitchen experience centre with a double-height display area is exactly where the sizing goes wrong. Then: waterless or water-based, timer granularity, key-lock, noise in dB, mounting options, power draw, certifications, refill availability, and what they promise about your business.

Which question do most suppliers dislike? Two of them. "What exactly do I buy when the supplied oil runs out, at what price, and how fast can I get it?" - because a machine with no clear refill route is a machine with a shelf life. And "what business result do you promise?" - because the honest answer is none, and a supplier who offers you a footfall or conversion figure has told you something about themselves. SOSA does not publish a business-outcome number because it has not measured one.

How does the SOSA Vaayu answer them? Openly, including the awkward one. 1000m³ cubic rating (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), waterless, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers plus a Bluetooth app, adjustable intensity, key-lock, under 38dB, freestanding or wall or HVAC mount, 5W, CE, RoHS and SGS, made in India, ₹11,999 with 4 × 100ml supplied running 90+ days a fill. And the gap: no cold-air refill oil is sold separately today, so continuity of supply has to be confirmed in writing.
The short answer
Short answer: ask ten things, starting with coverage in cubic metres rather than square feet, because a square-foot rating hides an assumed ceiling height. Then waterless or water-based, timer granularity, key-lock, noise in dB, mounting options, power draw, certifications, what exactly you buy when the supplied oil runs out, and what business result they promise - where the only honest answer is none. Run the list against SOSA too: the Vaayu answers nine of them and has an open line on cold-air refills.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) if your building genuinely needs a machine of that class - and one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) or one Mountain Breeze reed (₹849) if the cubic arithmetic says it does not, which for a large share of readers it will.
Next step: send us the same ten questions you are sending everyone else, and we will answer all of them in writing including the one where our answer is currently incomplete - Ask for a retail scenting plan.
Before you buy - the ten questions in five linesCoverage in cubic metres, never in square feet aloneWaterless or water-based? Timers? Key-lock? dB?What exactly do I buy when the oil runs out? What do you promise? Correct answer: nothingRun every question against SOSA as well

Straight answer
What should a showroom owner ask before buying a commercial scent machine?
Ten questions, and I would put them to every supplier you speak to including me. One: what is the coverage in cubic metres? This is the question that prevents the most expensive mistakes, because a square-foot rating has an assumed ceiling height baked into it and nobody tells you what height they assumed. Kitchen experience centres frequently have double-height display areas that hold far more air than the plan suggests. The SOSA Vaayu is rated to 1000m³, which works out at roughly 2,000-3,000 sq ft at normal ceiling height - and if a supplier cannot give you a cubic number at all, they have not sized a building in their life. Two: waterless or water-based? The Vaayu is a waterless cold-air nebuliser, so it adds no moisture to the room and leaves no residue on surfaces; ultrasonic machines such as the Sukoon at ₹1,899 work by cool mist, which is a real and honest difference to know about in a room full of finishes. Whether room humidity matters to a particular laminate or veneer is a question for the people who manufactured it, not for me. Three: what exactly can the timer do? Not "it has a timer" - the granularity. The Vaayu offers 1h/4h/8h/24h plus a Bluetooth app, which is what lets a showroom run on trading hours and come off entirely on a cooking-demonstration day. Four: is there a key-lock? On a floor where several people have opinions about the setting, a lock is the difference between a level and a drift. Five: how loud, in decibels? The Vaayu is under 38dB, which matters because your customer is seated at a table for sixty to ninety minutes. Six: how does it mount? Freestanding, wall, or into air handling - and mounting is what lets one source reach an entrance and a closed consultation room. Seven: what does it draw? 5W, so you can do your own electricity arithmetic rather than accepting anybody's. Eight: certifications and origin? CE, RoHS and SGS, made in India. Nine, and the one to press hardest: what exactly do I buy when the supplied oil runs out, at what price, and how quickly? Here is SOSA failing its own checklist, by name: no cold-air refill oil is sold separately today. The Vaayu ships with 4 × 100ml, that 400ml runs 90+ days a fill, and continuity of supply has to be confirmed with SOSA in writing before you budget or roll out. The water-based Hotel Collection is ultrasonic only and never a Vaayu refill. Ten: what business result do you promise? The correct answer is none, and a supplier who gives you a footfall, dwell or conversion figure has told you what kind of company they are. SOSA does not publish a business-outcome number because it has not measured one. Two more things while you are asking. Warranty, AMC, installation, spare parts, bulk pricing, minimum order, GST and corporate invoicing are all unpublished - get them in writing. And ask what register they would propose: if the answer is a warm vanilla or a coffee note, they have not understood this category, and SOSA's own Fresh Brew at ₹849 is exactly that register and is ruled out for a kitchen showroom. One last guardrail: none of these machines covers another smell - not laminate, not adhesive, not cooking - and any supplier who says otherwise has failed the list before you started. Ask for a retail scenting plan and send us the same questions.
Coverage in cubic metres, waterless or water-based, timer granularity, key-lock, dB, mounting, power draw, certifications, what you buy when the oil runs out, and what they promise. Run all ten against SOSA too: the Vaayu answers nine and has an open line on cold-air refills.
The machine this list is run against is one SOSA Vaayu - 1000m³ cubic rating, waterless, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, key-lock, under 38dB, 5W, CE, RoHS and SGS. ₹11,999 with 4 × 100ml supplied. If the cubic arithmetic says your building is smaller than it feels, buy the ₹1,899 Sukoon instead.

SOSA Vaayu
Answers nine of the ten from the spec sheet
SOSA Vaayu
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, auto-stop, key-lock, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, CE, RoHS and SGS. ₹11,999. Cold-air refill oil is not sold separately today.

SOSA Sukoon
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml fragrances, at ₹1,899. Water-based rather than waterless, which is a genuine difference and one this checklist exists to surface rather than to hide.

SOSA Vaayu
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, DC 12V/1A and 5W, 165 × 80.5 × 215mm and 0.9kg, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Ships with 4 × 100ml. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately, and warranty, AMC, installation, spare parts, bulk pricing, minimum order, GST and corporate invoicing are unpublished - confirm all of them with SOSA in writing.

The three questions that decide the purchase

Ten questions go on the list, but three of them do the work. If a supplier stumbles on any of these three, the rest of the conversation is decoration.

1
Make them answer in cubic metres
A square-foot rating has somebody else's ceiling height hidden inside it
Ask for the coverage as a volume and then do your own sum: length × width × ceiling height in metres. A 2,000 sq ft floor at a three-metre ceiling is roughly 558m³; the same floor plan under a double-height display area can be very nearly twice that. This is where kitchen experience centres get mis-specified more than any other retail category, because the drama of the space is precisely the thing that eats capacity. A supplier who quotes only square feet has silently assumed a height, and you will not find out which one until the far end of the showroom reads as nothing. The Vaayu is rated at 1000m³ and I would rather you checked your building against that number than against a square-foot claim.
Tip: If they cannot give you a cubic figure at all, stop there. It is the first thing anybody who sizes buildings knows.

One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

2
Ask what happens when the oil runs out
Here is SOSA failing its own checklist, in writing
The question is: what exactly do I buy, at what price, and how quickly can I get it? A machine with no clear reorder route is a machine with a shelf life, and the answer decides whether you can plan a year, let alone a rollout. SOSA's own answer is currently incomplete and I would rather print that than have you discover it. No cold-air refill oil is sold separately today. The Vaayu ships with 4 × 100ml, that 400ml runs 90+ days a fill, and continuity of supply must be confirmed with SOSA in writing before you budget or commit to more than one showroom. The water-based Hotel Collection at ₹299, ₹999 and ₹1,799 is ultrasonic only and is never a Vaayu refill, so it does not close the gap.
Tip: Ask for the reorder process rather than for reassurance - who you order from, and on what lead time.
SOSA Vaayu
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
See SOSA Vaayu →
3
Ask what they promise, then listen carefully
The correct answer is nothing, and most suppliers cannot resist
Put it plainly: what will this do to my business? Any figure at all - footfall, enquiries, dwell, conversion, order value, referrals - is a claim nobody in this industry can support, because there is no honest way to separate ambient scent from the twenty other things a customer experiences across a ninety-minute visit. SOSA does not publish a business-outcome number because it has not measured one. What can honestly be discussed is whether the air in your showroom is coherent with the displays, the lighting, the designers' service and the price of the kitchens - and that is something you can judge yourself by walking in from outside. While you are listening: if the register they propose is a warm vanilla or a coffee, they have not understood the category.
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuser
SOSA's own Fresh Brew at ₹849 is coffee and vanilla, and it is exactly the register a kitchen showroom must avoid.
See SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuser →
The SOSA principle
A buyer's checklist is only worth anything if the person who published it can be failed by it. Nine of these ten questions SOSA answers off the specification sheet; the tenth - what you buy when the supplied oil runs out - is a gap, and printing it is the only way the list means anything.
Use it on us. That is what it is for.
SOSA Vaayu
A cubic rating you can check: SOSA Vaayu is rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft at normal ceiling height. ₹11,999.

The checklist, question by question

Print this, send it to every supplier including us, and compare the written answers rather than the conversations.

The SOSA plan
Ten questions, and how SOSA answers them
The question What to do
SOSA VaayuWhat is the coverage in cubic metres?
Not square feet, which hides an assumed ceiling height. SOSA Vaayu: 1000m³, roughly 2,000-3,000 sq ft at a normal ceiling. Do your own sum in metres before you accept anybody's.
SOSA SukoonWaterless or water-based?
SOSA Vaayu: waterless cold-air nebulisation, so no moisture is added to the room and no residue is left on surfaces. The Sukoon at ₹1,899 is ultrasonic cool mist, which is a different thing and worth knowing.
What exactly can it control?
Timer granularity, not just the presence of a timer. SOSA Vaayu: 1h/4h/8h/24h plus a Bluetooth app, adjustable intensity, auto-stop and a key-lock so a settled level survives a busy floor.
How loud, and how does it mount?
Under 38dB, which matters through a sixty to ninety minute consultation. Freestanding, wall or HVAC mount - and mounting is how one source reaches an entrance and a closed consultation room.
What do I buy when the oil runs out?
The question to press hardest, and SOSA's answer is currently incomplete: no cold-air refill oil is sold separately today. 4 × 100ml supplied, 400ml running 90+ days a fill, continuity to be confirmed in writing. Hotel Collection is ultrasonic only and never a Vaayu refill.
What do you promise, and on what terms?
The only honest promise is none - SOSA does not publish a business-outcome number because it has not measured one. And warranty, AMC, installation, spare parts, bulk pricing, minimum order, GST and corporate invoicing are unpublished, so ask for all of them in writing.

Before the checklist matters at all, the prior question is whether you need a machine, and it is answered honestly in whether a commercial scent machine is worth buying. The first question on the list is worked out in full in how to calculate the right scent-machine capacity, which is the arithmetic every supplier should be doing for you and most do not. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel.

Run every question against every supplier and keep the written answers. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like lighting or display styling; it is never used to cover another smell - not laminate, not adhesive, not cooking - and no cold-air refill oil is sold separately by SOSA today, so continuity of supply must be confirmed in writing. Warranty, AMC, installation, spare parts, bulk pricing, minimum order, GST and corporate invoicing are not published either. And plainly: SOSA does not publish a business-outcome number because it has not measured one, and any supplier quoting you a figure is selling. Ask for a retail scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal

I wrote this list originally for my own use, because I wanted to know what other suppliers in this category were actually claiming, and then it seemed dishonest to publish it without running SOSA down it in public. So that is what this page is. Nine of the ten questions the Vaayu answers straight off the listing - a cubic rating rather than a square-foot claim, waterless, the exact timer options, a key-lock, a decibel figure, mounting choices, a wattage, and its certifications. Those are all things you can verify without speaking to me.

The tenth is the one where we are not good enough yet, and printing it is the whole point of the exercise. There is no cold-air refill oil sold separately today. A Vaayu comes with 4 × 100ml, that 400ml runs 90+ days a fill, and after that the answer is an email rather than a product page. For a single showroom that is a season's grace and a conversation. For anybody planning a rollout it is a genuine gap, and I would rather you knew and asked us about it in writing than found out in month four. The Hotel Collection oils do not fix it either - they are ultrasonic only and never a Vaayu refill.

The last question on the list is the one I care most about, and it is the one where a lot of this industry embarrasses itself. Ask what a supplier promises your business. The truthful answer is nothing: SOSA does not publish a business-outcome number because it has not measured one, and no one can separate ambient scent from the twenty other things a customer meets in a ninety-minute visit. What is worth discussing is coherence - whether the air agrees with your displays, your lighting and the price of your kitchens. If you would like our written answers to all ten, the Vaayu is ₹11,999, the Sukoon ₹1,899 and a Mountain Breeze reed ₹849, and I will send them. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What should I ask before buying a commercial scent machine for my kitchen showroom?
Ten things. Coverage in cubic metres rather than square feet. Waterless or water-based. Exactly what the timer can do. Whether there is a key-lock. Noise in decibels. Mounting options. Power draw. Certifications and origin. What you buy when the supplied oil runs out, at what price and how fast. And what business result they promise, where the only honest answer is none. Send the same list to every supplier and compare the written replies.
Why does coverage in cubic metres matter so much?
Because a square-foot rating has an assumed ceiling height hidden inside it and nobody tells you which height. Kitchen experience centres often have double-height display areas that hold nearly twice the air the floor plan suggests, so a machine sized on square feet alone is under-specified from the start. The SOSA Vaayu is rated to 1000 cubic metres, roughly 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft at a normal ceiling. Do your own sum in metres first.
Where does the SOSA Vaayu fail this checklist?
On refills, and I would rather say so here than let you find out later. No cold-air refill oil is sold separately today. The machine ships with 4 by 100ml, that 400ml runs 90 days or more a fill, and continuity of supply has to be confirmed with SOSA in writing before you budget or roll out to more than one showroom. The water-based Hotel Collection is ultrasonic only and is never a Vaayu refill.
What is the right answer to what will this do for my business?
Nothing anybody can promise. SOSA does not publish a business-outcome number because it has not measured one, and there is no honest way to separate ambient scent from the twenty other things a customer experiences in a ninety-minute visit. A supplier who offers you a footfall, dwell or conversion figure has told you something useful about themselves. What can be discussed is whether the air is coherent with the displays, the lighting and the price of the kitchens.
What terms are not published, and should I worry?
Warranty, AMC, installation, spare parts, bulk and dealer pricing, minimum order, GST and corporate invoicing, and delivery timing are all unpublished, along with continuity of cold-air refill supply. It is not a reason to walk away from a single-machine purchase, but every one of them should be asked for in writing before a rollout, and the same applies to any supplier you are comparing us against.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.

Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference. Coverage, fragrance usage and running cost depend on the space, settings and hours of use, and are confirmed on a consultation.
