This is the practical guide: what to do before the machine arrives, where to put it, how to set a level you physically cannot judge yourself, what the daily and pre-guest schedules should be, what a year actually costs in refills, and what to change when something is not working. It is written for a home that has people over, and it assumes you want the house to smell the same in November as it did in March.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I set up a SOSA Vaayu for guest arrival? In five steps. Before it arrives, clean the doormat, air and dry the shoe cupboard and move any bin out of the entrance. On day one, place it about one and a half to two metres inside the door at chest height, on the air path or beside the air-conditioning return. On day two, set the intensity with somebody else standing at your open door, then key-lock it. Then run it low and continuously with a longer window about 45 minutes before guests. Refill roughly every 75 days with the same oil. Rs 11,999, rated to 1000 cubic metres.
How often does a SOSA Vaayu need refilling? The 400ml tank lasts up to about 75 days depending on intensity and run hours, so a year of continuous use is roughly five fills. Running it at a low intensity, which is what a home should do anyway, sits at the longer end of that range. Reorder the same fragrance each time, because changing profiles resets the association guests are forming with your home.
What do I do if guests cannot smell anything, or say it is too strong? Do not diagnose it with your own nose, because you are adapted to your home and cannot judge it. If a guest notices nothing at the open door, check the placement first, since a machine in a sealed corner or right beside the door underperforms, then raise the intensity one step. If a guest is still aware of the scent five minutes in, or can locate its source, come down a step and start the run earlier instead. The SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) has adjustable intensity and a key-lock.
The short answer
Short answer: fix the entrance sources first, place the machine one and a half to two metres inside the door on the air path, set the level using a visitor's nose and key-lock it, run low and continuous with 45 minutes extra before guests, and refill the same oil roughly every 75 days. SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999, rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) set up as above, running a single restrained profile for at least a year.
Next step: send a photo of your entrance and your floor area, and we will confirm placement and settings - ask us what fits your home.
How do I set up the SOSA Vaayu as a guest arrival system?
Five stages, in order. Stage one, before it arrives, and it is free. Clean the doormat and keep cleaning it weekly. Empty, dry and air the shoe cupboard, and make a rule that damp shoes dry elsewhere before they go in. Move any bin out of the entrance completely. Find somewhere ventilated for wet umbrellas, sports kit and pet towels. If you skip this stage, everything after it produces a perfumed version of the same problem. Stage two, placement. About one and a half to two metres inside the front door, at roughly chest height, on a console or wall mounted above the shoe cabinet - the Vaayu is 165 x 80.5 x 215mm and 0.9kg, so both work. Put it where air already moves; beside the air-conditioning return is the best position in most flats because the system then distributes the scent across the floor. Avoid the doorway itself, where every opening pushes output outside, and avoid a sealed corner, which makes a strong patch and a dead hall. Stage three, the level. This is the step people get wrong, because you are adapted to your own home and cannot judge it. Ask somebody who does not live there to stand at your open door and tell you honestly. Target: clearly noticeable on entry, out of conscious attention a minute later. Then use the key-lock so it cannot drift, and specifically so you do not raise it in a month when you stop noticing it - you adapted, the level did not fall. Stage four, the schedule. A low continuous daily run using the 1h, 4h, 8h and 24h timers, plus a longer window starting about 45 minutes before guests arrive. For a bigger gathering, start earlier rather than stronger, because a warm and crowded room lifts fragrance on its own. Stage five, the refills. The 400ml tank runs up to 75 days depending on intensity and hours, so a year of consistency is roughly five fills of the same oil. Changing profiles resets the association your regular visitors are building. Running cost is small: 5W, about 1.5 units of electricity a month on a ten hour daily schedule, and the machine is ₹11,999, waterless, under 38dB, with auto-stop and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, made in India. Honest limits, as always: it is not an air purifier, makes no health claim, and cannot cover damp, cooking, pet odour or fresh paint. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. A free home scenting plan will check placement against a photo of your entrance, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Sources, placement, level set by somebody else, schedule, refills. Five stages, one purchase, and the same oil for a year.
The guide in one line: SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999, placed two metres inside the door on the air path, level set by a visitor and key-locked, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers running low all day plus 45 minutes before guests, refilled every 75 days or so with the same oil.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 400ml tank lasting up to 75 days, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers and adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified, made in India.
165 x 80.5 x 215mm and 0.9kg. Two metres inside the door at chest height, on a console or wall mounted above the shoe cabinet, or fixed on the air-conditioning return for even distribution.
Low continuous daily run plus a longer window before guests. Set the intensity with somebody else's nose, then key-lock it so it cannot creep upward over the months.
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank lasting up to 75 days, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers with adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India.
Here is the same sequence again with the detail that matters at each step, including the mistakes people make in week two.
1
Week zero
Everything free happens before the machine arrives
Clean the doormat and set a weekly reminder for it. Empty the shoe cupboard, wipe it out, let it dry properly and leave it ventilated rather than sealed; if it is fully enclosed, put activated charcoal or silica inside. Make a rule about damp shoes drying outside the cupboard. Move the bin out of the entrance and stop it coming back. Give umbrellas, sports bags and pet towels somewhere with airflow. This stage takes an afternoon, costs nothing, and is the difference between a machine that works and a machine that makes an odd smell more complicated.
Tip: if you only do one thing this week, open and dry the shoe cupboard.
The Vaayu is worth installing on top of a clean, dry entrance and worth nothing on top of a damp one.
Place it about one and a half to two metres inside the door, chest height, on the air path, and not in the direct sightline from the open door. Then get the level right, which requires a second person. Ask them to arrive normally, come in through the front door and tell you honestly whether they notice it at all, whether they can locate the source, and whether they are still aware of it after five minutes. Noticed at the door and forgotten a minute later is correct. Locatable, or still present in conscious attention at minute five, is a step too high. Then key-lock it, because in three weeks your own nose will tell you it has stopped working, and it will be lying.
Adjustable intensity plus a key-lock means the level survives your own adaptation and everybody else's helpfulness.
Run a low continuous level daily so the home smells like itself on ordinary mornings, not just on the nights you are expecting people. Add a longer window about 45 minutes ahead when guests are due, and for a large gathering start earlier still rather than raising the intensity. Refill roughly every 75 days with the same fragrance. Resist rotating for seasons or festivals: the whole value of this setup is that a regular visitor meets the same air every time, and that is what eventually becomes the memory of your home. Reassess the profile after a year if you want to, not before.
Tip: same oil, same level, twelve months. That is the entire discipline.
A 400ml tank lasting up to 75 days makes a year of consistency about five reorders.
Here is the troubleshooting table, which covers almost everything people write to us about.
The SOSA plan
Troubleshooting, by what somebody actually told you
Your situation
What to do
A guest noticed nothing at the door
Check placement before intensity. Move it out of a corner or away from the doorway onto the air path, then raise one step if needed. Rated to 1000m³, so coverage is rarely the issue in a flat. View →
A guest was still aware of it after five minutes
One step down, and start the run earlier instead. Level is the most common mistake, and a warm crowded room amplifies whatever you have set. View →
You cannot smell it any more after two weeks
That is adaptation, not a fault, and it is the moment most people ruin their setup by turning it up. Ask a visitor before you change anything.
It smells strong in the hall and absent in the living room
Reposition onto the moving air - beside the air-conditioning return is ideal - rather than adding a second machine. One unit covers about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. View →
One machine, five stages, one fragrance. The Vaayu is waterless, so there is no dampness and nothing settling on a console, a mirror, books or art. It is quiet enough for an entrance, lockable so the level holds, CE, RoHS and SGS certified, and made in India. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA arrival specification
One machine, placed on the air the guest walks into
The honest limits, restated because they matter more than any setting in this guide: the Vaayu is not an air purifier and makes no health claim, and fragrance works alongside ventilation and cleaning rather than instead of them. It cannot cover damp, a musty shoe cupboard, pet odour, cooking or new-furniture off-gassing, all of which need cleaning, airflow or time first. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. If you would like placement and settings checked against a photo of your entrance, ask us what fits your home.

A note from Sonal
This guide exists because most of the questions we get are not about fragrance at all. They are about a machine in the wrong corner, a level set by somebody who cannot smell their own house, or a beautiful oil fighting a shoe cupboard. Those three account for nearly everything.
So the order I recommend is stubbornly practical. Clean and dry the entrance first. Place the Vaayu about two metres inside the door on the moving air. Have somebody else set the level. Run it low all day with a longer window before guests. Refill the same oil about five times a year, and leave the rest alone. One machine covers 1000m³, roughly 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft, which is most Indian homes.
And the honest part. A home smells good because it is aired and clean first, then scented. The Vaayu is not an air purifier and makes no health claim, and it cannot cover damp, cooking, a musty cupboard or fresh paint. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
How should I set up a SOSA Vaayu for guests arriving?
Clean the doormat, air and dry the shoe cupboard and move the bin out of the entrance first. Place the machine about one and a half to two metres inside the front door at chest height, on the air path or beside the air-conditioning return. Set the intensity with somebody who does not live there standing at your open door, then key-lock it. Run it low continuously with a longer window about 45 minutes before guests arrive.
How often do I refill the Vaayu, and with what?
The 400ml tank lasts up to about 75 days depending on intensity and run hours, so roughly five fills a year at a low continuous setting. Refill with the same fragrance every time. Changing profiles restarts the association that regular visitors are building with your home, which is the main thing this setup is for.
What should I do if I cannot smell the fragrance any more?
Nothing, most likely. Your nose adapts to a constant background within days, and the level has almost certainly not changed. Ask a visitor before adjusting anything. Turning it up because you stopped noticing it is the single most common way a well set up home becomes overpowering to everyone else.
Where should it not go?
Not in the doorway itself, because every time the door opens most of the output goes outside. Not in a sealed corner or behind a door leaf, which creates a strong local patch and a dead hall. Not inside or right beside the shoe cupboard. And not in the direct sightline from the open door, since a guest should notice the hall rather than the equipment in it.
Can I use a different fragrance for festivals or parties?
You can, but it works against the point. A special occasion scent signals that the evening was staged and it resets the memory regular guests are forming. Keep the same profile and start the run earlier instead of turning it up, since a warm crowded room already amplifies whatever you are running.
