Designers are usually asked about scent at the mood-board stage, when the only answerable question is which fragrance - and that is the one question that can be answered at any time. Everything genuinely time-sensitive about scenting a boutique is on a services drawing nobody thinks to look at.
Quick answers — read this first
Should my interior designer plan for scent? Yes, and at the services drawing rather than the mood board. What your designer settles - and you cannot change afterwards without opening something up - is where the air-conditioning supply and return sit, whether there is a threshold lobby, whether there is a socket at high level away from the entrance, whether the joinery leaves a mounting face, and whether any zone can actually be closed off. The fragrance itself is the one element in this decision that can be changed later, which is exactly why it should not be decided first.

What do I actually give them? Three lines, and they fit on a services drawing. One: a 5W socket at high level, positioned well inside the store rather than at the entrance. Two: a mounting position on the supply side of the air conditioning, not next to a return. Three: a note that the machine must not sit at the door. That is the whole brief. Nothing about the fragrance, nothing about a scent identity, no niche in the joinery designed around a machine somebody has not chosen yet.

What does the hardware end up costing? One SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a boutique past roughly 1,500 sq ft, or with an entrance and a private lounge to carry - it is freestanding, wall-mountable or mountable into the air handling, which is why the position belongs on a drawing. Under about 750 sq ft the honest answer is one Sukoon at ₹1,899 and a Vaayu would be the wrong buy - but the socket is worth drawing either way.
The short answer
Short answer: yes, at the services drawing rather than the mood board. Your designer fixes the things you cannot change later - the air-conditioning layout, the threshold, a high-level socket away from the door, a mounting face - and the fragrance is the one part that can be decided at any time. The brief is three lines. Vaayu ₹11,999, or a Sukoon at ₹1,899 under 750 sq ft.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999), wall-mounted or into the air handling on the supply side and well inside the store, or one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) where the boutique is a single room.
Next step: send the reflected ceiling plan and the air-conditioning layout while they are still drawings, and we will mark where a socket and a mounting position should go - Ask for a retail scenting plan.

Everything time-sensitive about scenting a boutique is a services decision, and everything everybody wants to discuss is a fragrance decision. Getting those two the right way round is the whole of this post.
What the drawing has to allow for - tap for the specification
Straight answer
Should my interior designer consider signature scent while designing my watch store?
Yes - but at the services drawing rather than the mood board, and for the opposite reason to the one people expect. When scent comes up in a design meeting it is almost always the fragrance that gets discussed: what the store should smell like, whether there should be a signature, what it says about the brand. That is the single most changeable element of the whole decision. You can change a fragrance in a fortnight for the price of a reed, and plenty of stores do, twice, before they settle. What you cannot change afterwards without opening something up is everything your designer is quietly fixing while that conversation happens. Five things belong to the drawings and to nobody else. Where the air-conditioning supply and return sit, because a machine near a return has its output drawn away before anyone in the room meets it, while the supply side distributes better than any free-standing unit ever will. Whether there is a threshold lobby or an air curtain, because a street or mall door is an air exchange rather than a wall and no setting compensates for that - the threshold is not where a store's scent lives, and a designer who understands that will not put the machine there to "greet" people. Whether there is a 5W socket at high level, well inside the store, because the alternative is a cable down a wall in the most photographed part of your business. Whether the joinery leaves an accessible mounting face - not a sealed decorative niche designed around a machine nobody has chosen yet. And whether any zone can genuinely be closed: a door that shuts plus its own air path is what makes a second volume, and that is an architectural fact, not a purchasing one. So the brief you give the designer is three lines: a socket at high level away from the entrance, a mounting position on the supply side of the air conditioning, and a note that the machine must not sit at the door. Nothing about the fragrance. Two honest concessions. Retrofitting works, and it is always worse - a free-standing unit on a shelf will scent a boutique perfectly well, it just costs you the placement you would have chosen and usually a visible cable. And a new store should trade unscented for its first weeks: adhesive, paint, carpet and new joinery need ventilating out, never scenting over, and switching on at handover is the commonest opening-week mistake in retail. Hardware last, as always: one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 past roughly 1,500 sq ft or wherever there is an entrance and a lounge to carry, and one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 under about 750 sq ft, where a Vaayu would be the wrong buy. Plainly: this is a presentation decision like lighting or case spacing, it is never used to cover another smell, and no one can promise you it moves footfall, dwell or spend - a supplier offering your designer a figure is selling. Ask for a retail scenting plan and send the drawings while they are still drawings.
Yes, but at the services drawing. Give them three lines - a high-level socket away from the door, a mounting position on the AC supply side, and no machine at the entrance - and leave the fragrance until the store is built and ventilated.
The machine the drawing should allow for is one SOSA Vaayu - 5W, 165 × 80.5 × 215mm, freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable, under 38dB, waterless - at ₹11,999. Under about 750 sq ft, a Sukoon at ₹1,899 instead, though the socket is worth drawing either way.

The machine the drawing has to allow for

A designer does not need to know which fragrance you will choose. They need the physical envelope: size, power, noise and the three ways the machine can be positioned.

SOSA Vaayu
The unit a services drawing should allow for
SOSA Vaayu
165 × 80.5 × 215mm, 0.9kg, DC 12V/1A at 5W, under 38dB, black or white. Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, auto-stop and key-lock. Freestanding, wall-mounted or mounted into the air handling.

SOSA Sukoon
Under about 750 sq ft - draw for this instead
SOSA Sukoon
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml fragrances. A single-room boutique is honestly finished here and a Vaayu would be the wrong buy - but the socket position still deserves a line on the drawing, because a cable across a display wall is a permanent irritation.
From ₹1,899
SOSA Vaayu
The physical envelope a designer actually needs
SOSA Vaayu
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, 165 × 80.5 × 215mm at 0.9kg, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA.

The three things only the designer can decide

These three are settled on paper months before anyone smells anything, and each one is expensive or impossible to revisit afterwards.

1
The air path
A machine near a return is drawn away; on the supply side the building does the distribution for you
Air conditioning is both the obstacle and the opportunity, and which one it turns out to be is decided on a drawing. Place a source near a return grille and the output is pulled into the plant before anyone in the room meets it, which is the commonest reason a correctly specified machine seems weak. Put it on the supply side, or mount it into the air handling, and the system distributes a single profile further and more evenly than any free-standing unit could. Ductwork, filtration and whether anything may be mounted into the system are your air-conditioning engineer's call rather than a fragrance supplier's, and they need asking while the layout is still on paper.
Tip: Ask for the supply and return positions on the reflected ceiling plan, and mark the machine well away from every return.
SOSA Vaayu
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

2
The threshold
A door that opens all day is an air exchange, and no drawing changes that - but a lobby helps
A street-facing or mall-facing entrance exchanges the air near it many times an hour, which is why the first two metres of a store never hold a fragrance and why turning the machine up makes the interior overpowering while the doorway still smells of the corridor. The design response is architectural: an entrance lobby, a vestibule or an air curtain if the fit-out allows one, and placement well inside the pressure boundary if it does not. What a designer must not do is put the machine at the entrance to greet arrivals, which is the intuitive position and the worst one available. Accept the threshold and spend the effort on where the room actually begins.
Tip: If a lobby is possible, it does more for the store's air than any dial ever will.

3
The socket, the mounting face and the zones
Three small drawing decisions that cannot be added later without opening something up
A 5W socket at high level, well inside the store, so there is never a cable down a display wall. An accessible mounting face near the air supply - a flat, reachable surface rather than a sealed decorative niche built around a machine nobody has chosen, which is the well-meant mistake I see most often, because the machine changes and the niche does not. And an honest zone plan: a second machine belongs to a second volume of air - a door that shuts and its own air path, both true - never to a second corner of the same showroom. If the drawing produces one volume, one Vaayu at ₹11,999 is the whole answer.

The SOSA principle
Everything about scenting a boutique that has a deadline is on a services drawing, and everything anyone wants to discuss in a design meeting is a fragrance that can be changed in a fortnight.
So brief your designer on sockets, air paths and the door, and leave the register until the store is built, ventilated and trading.
SOSA Vaayu
Three ways to position it: Freestanding, wall-mounted or into the air handling - which is exactly why a designer needs to know about it early. ₹11,999.

The brief, drawing by drawing

Here is the whole brief as it maps onto the drawings your designer is already producing. Six lines, and none of them is a fragrance.

The SOSA plan
What goes on which drawing
The drawing What to do
SOSA VaayuReflected ceiling plan
Mark the air-conditioning supply and return positions, and place the machine well away from every return grille.
Electrical layout
One 5W socket at high level, well inside the store and never at the entrance. This is the cheapest line on the list and the one most often missed.
Joinery drawings
An accessible flat mounting face near the supply side. Not a sealed decorative niche built around a machine that has not been chosen yet.
Entrance and threshold detail
A lobby, vestibule or air curtain if the fit-out allows. If not, accept the first two metres and place the source well inside.
SOSA SukoonZone plan
A second machine only where a door can be shut and the air path is genuinely separate. Both true, or it is one volume and one machine.
The fragrance
Not on any drawing. Choose it after handover, after the fit-out smell has ventilated out, and after the store has traded unscented for its first weeks.

The method for choosing the register once the building is finished is set out in how do I match ambient fragrance with my watch boutique's interior design, and the same conversation from the architect's side, where placement is the whole question, is should my architect plan scent-machine placement before my watch store opens. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel.

Designers are asked about scent at the mood board and needed at the services drawing, which is why so many boutiques end up with a beautiful room and a cable running down the display wall.

The SOSA fit-out specification

Two machines cover almost every boutique, and which one belongs on your drawing is decided by floor area and by whether there is a second volume of air. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately, so the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill, and if this is the first of several stores, confirm continuity of refill supply with SOSA before it goes into a rollout programme. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Give the designer sockets, air paths and the door rather than a fragrance, leave a new store unscented while the fit-out ventilates out, and accept that retrofitting works but costs you the placement. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like lighting or case spacing, it is never used to cover another smell, and no one can promise you it moves footfall, dwell or spend - a supplier quoting your designer a figure is selling. Ask for a retail scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal

Interior designers ask me about scent at exactly the wrong moment, and it is not their fault - it is the moment the client raises it. Scent appears on a mood board rather than on a drawing, next to the marble sample and the leather swatch, and the conversation becomes what the store should smell like. Meanwhile, three drawings away, decisions are being made that will govern this for the life of the store: where the air-conditioning returns are, whether there is a lobby, whether there is a socket anywhere except at skirting level by the door.

So when a designer calls me, I ask for the reflected ceiling plan rather than the mood board. What I need to know is where the supply and the return grilles are, because a machine near a return has its output pulled into the plant before a customer meets it, and a machine on the supply side gets the building to do its distribution for free. Then I ask whether the entrance has a lobby, because a door that opens all day is an air exchange and no dial fixes that. Then I ask for one 5W socket at high level, well inside the store. That is the whole brief, and it is three lines long.

What I tell owners to leave alone is the fragrance itself, which is the only reversible part of this. Decide it after handover, after the adhesive and paint have ventilated out, and after the store has traded unscented for a few weeks - switching on at handover is the commonest opening-week mistake in retail. Then a Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a store past about 1,500 sq ft, or a Sukoon at ₹1,899 for a single room, and I will tell you plainly which one you need rather than which one I would rather sell. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Should my interior designer consider signature scent while designing my watch store?
Yes, but at the services drawing rather than the mood board. What a designer fixes permanently is the air-conditioning layout, the threshold, a socket position and whether the joinery offers a mounting face. The fragrance itself is the one part of the decision that can be changed in a fortnight for the price of a reed, which is exactly why it should be decided last rather than first.
What exactly should I ask my designer for?
Three lines. A 5W socket at high level, positioned well inside the store rather than at the entrance. A mounting position on the supply side of the air conditioning and away from any return grille. And a note that the machine must not sit at the door. Nothing about fragrance, and no sealed decorative niche designed around a machine that has not been chosen yet, because the niche outlives the machine.
Why does the position relative to the air conditioning matter so much?
Because a source near a return grille has its output drawn into the plant before anyone in the room meets it, which is the commonest reason a correctly specified machine seems weak. On the supply side, or mounted into the air handling, the building distributes a single profile further and more evenly than a free-standing unit can. Whether anything may be mounted into the system is your air-conditioning engineer's decision rather than a fragrance supplier's.
Can scenting be added after the store is built?
Yes. Retrofitting works, and it is always worse. A free-standing unit on a shelf will scent a boutique perfectly well; what it costs you is the placement you would have chosen, usually a visible cable, and sometimes the ability to reach a lounge or an entrance that a wall or duct mount would have reached. That is a real loss rather than a fatal one, which is why the socket is the cheapest line on any drawing.
Should a new boutique be scented from opening day?
No. A new store smells of adhesive, paint, carpet and new joinery, and that must be ventilated out rather than scented over - running a machine on top of it simply gives you two smells. Trade unscented for the first weeks, let the fit-out settle, then choose the register in the finished, occupied room. Switching on at handover is the most common opening-week mistake in retail, and it is entirely avoidable.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.

Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference. Coverage, fragrance usage and running cost depend on the space, settings and hours of use, and are confirmed on a consultation.
