How do I get the musty monsoon smell out of my car for good?
Treat the cause, not the symptom. The musty smell is damp - moisture trapped in the carpet, mats and seats during the rains, feeding the microbes that produce that mildewy odour. A car perfume will mask it while the scent lasts, but the smell comes straight back because the wet source is untouched. So dry the cabin out first - pull the mats, vacuum the carpet, run the blower or park open on a dry day to air it, and clean anything visibly soiled. Once the cabin is properly dry and clean, then a fresh scent like Lemon keeps it pleasant. Scent is the finish, not the fix.

The musty smell is one of the most misunderstood problems drivers bring to me, because the instinct is to reach straight for a spray. But to fix it you have to know what it actually is, and it is not a lack of fragrance. It is damp. During the monsoon, water finds its way in on your shoes, on the mats, through a window left ajar, and as plain humidity in the air. It soaks into the carpet, the seat foam and the boot lining - all the soft, absorbent parts of a cabin - and it does not dry out, because the car spends most of its day sealed and parked.
What the musty smell really is
That mildewy, basement-like odour is the smell of microbial activity in trapped moisture. Mould and bacteria thrive in the warm, damp, dark spaces of a wet cabin and release the musty compounds you smell. The smell is a signal that something is still wet - which is exactly why a fragrance over the top does not end it.
This is also why the smell tends to be worst when you first get in, fade slightly as you drive with the windows down, and then return the moment the car is shut and parked again. The damp never left - you just diluted the air for a while. The damp evaporator and cabin filter of the air-conditioning can add to it too, which I have written about separately, but the carpet and mats are usually the main offenders in the rains.
Monsoon-smell myths worth dropping

Dry, clean, then scent
The fix is a sequence, and the order is the whole point. First, dry it out. On the next dry, sunny day, open all the doors and let the cabin breathe for an hour or two. Pull out the floor mats and dry them fully in the sun - rubber mats wipe down, fabric ones need real drying. Run the blower on a low setting to push air through, and if your car has been very wet, a few hours with the windows cracked open in a safe, dry spot does wonders.
Second, clean the source. Vacuum the carpet and seats thoroughly to lift out the trapped grit and moisture that the microbes feed on. Wipe down hard surfaces. If a footwell is visibly stained or the smell is concentrated in one spot, that area needs a proper clean, not a spritz. This is the step that actually removes the cause - everything before it is preparation, everything after it is finishing.
The one thing to get right
Fragrance is the last step, never the first. Dry and clean the cabin, and only then scent it.
A perfume sprayed over damp upholstery gives you musty-and-perfumed, which is worse than musty alone. Fix the damp, and the scent finally has a clean cabin to work with.
Third, scent it. Once the cabin is properly dry and clean, a fresh scent keeps it that way and stops the lingering memory of must.
