Is there anything under Rs 300? Not for a car. The Rs 299 Hotel Collection is water-based and ultrasonic-only - a room product, not a car one.
What should I do between Rs 1,000 and Rs 3,999? Combine smaller items, or buy a sequence: a perfume now and refills at months four, eight and twelve.
Where the products actually are, including the gaps
Start at the bottom, because that is where most guides are least honest. There is no car product under four hundred and forty-nine rupees in this shop. The cheapest thing SOSA sells is the Hotel Collection at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees for fifteen millilitres, and it is a water-based fragrance made for ultrasonic diffusers at three to six drops per tank - a room product. It is not reed oil, it is not for a car device, and it does not belong in a vehicle. A page that pointed at it for a car-gift budget would be selling the wrong thing. With three hundred rupees the honest moves are to pool with somebody, or to bring sweets on the day and give a car gift later. Four hundred and forty-nine to five hundred and nine rupees is the core band and where most new-car gifting happens. The eight hanging car perfumes are Jasmine four hundred and forty-nine, Lavender and Sandalwood four hundred and seventy-nine, Icy Mint four hundred and eighty-nine, Lemon four hundred and ninety-nine, and Vetiver, Sea Breeze and Oud five hundred and nine. Five of the eight sit under five hundred rupees and the three above are not better products - they are three further registers. Which one you choose is decided by where the car stands during the day rather than by taste, and the reason is physical: a cabin holds a few cubic metres of sealed air, sits in the sun and reaches temperatures nothing in a house comes close to, and the occupants are strapped in and cannot walk away from anything. Heat pushes sweetness forward dramatically and burns the light fresh parts off first. So dry, green, citrus and marine behave - Icy Mint, Lemon, Sea Breeze and Vetiver, the last being the driest and most grown-up - while Sandalwood and Oud belong in a car kept in a basement or covered parking. Five hundred and forty-nine rupees adds the Mysore Orange Blossom car perfume spray, which changes a variable rather than a register. It is applied by hand, when the owner wants it, and does nothing the rest of the time - which is the right answer for a car that carries parents, colleagues or clients, for an owner who wears perfume deliberately, and for anybody particular about having nothing visible in their interior. Six hundred and ninety-nine rupees adds the discovery set of three sprays, and this is the point at which the budget stops buying products and starts buying control: three registers, tried over a few weeks in the recipient's own car, decided by the person who will live with it. It is the best answer when you do not know their taste and the best-shaped gift for delivery day, because it is naturally used across weeks rather than immediately. Eight hundred and ninety-nine to nine hundred and forty-nine rupees is the combinations: Jasmine and Lemon at eight hundred and ninety-nine, Jasmine and Lavender at eight hundred and ninety-nine, Oud and Lemon at nine hundred and forty-nine, Sandalwood and Oud at nine hundred and forty-nine. Good value with one condition attached: not both at once. One unit is the dose for an ordinary car, and two is pleasant in January and oppressive by mid-May. Use them as one now and one in four months, or across two household cars, and say which when you hand it over. Then the gap. Between nine hundred and forty-nine and three thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees there is no car product at all, and no rearranging produces one. The one-thousand-and-forty-nine-rupee nebuliser refill exists but is the Safar's consumable - without the machine it has nothing to go into, so it is not a standalone gift. What to do in that band is either combine several small things - a combination plus a refill, or a discovery set plus a single perfume - or change what you are buying and purchase time instead: a perfume now and refills at months four, eight and twelve. A thousand five hundred rupees covers roughly a year that way, and two and a half thousand covers a year comfortably with something for the house as well: a coconut-soy candle at three hundred and seventy-nine rupees and five paise, hand-poured in Pune, or a reed diffuser from seven hundred and forty-nine. One rule if you cross into home products: reed oil is a home product and never goes in a car, and the three systems here - hanging car perfumes, reed diffusers, and the water-based Hotel Collection for ultrasonic machines - do not interchange. Three thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees is the SOSA Safar, a waterless car perfume diffuser and the one product this shop recommends at the premium level for a vehicle without qualification. It should be given with a nebuliser refill at one thousand and forty-nine rupees rather than empty, which makes five thousand and forty-eight - worth knowing if the budget is a hard five thousand, in which case the Safar with a four-hundred-and-forty-nine-rupee hanging perfume comes to four thousand four hundred and forty-eight and the refill can follow at month four. And then the ceiling, which is the most useful thing on this page for anybody with a large budget. Above the Safar there is nothing for a car. The SOSA Vaayu at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees is a commercial waterless nebuliser built for spaces of roughly a thousand cubic metres - showrooms, hotel lobbies, clinics - and a car cabin holds a few. It is not a car product at any price. If the money is there, the better shape is the Safar plus refills across the year, or the Safar for the car and something separate for the home. Two things cost nothing and outrank every band on this page. Placement: never in front of an air conditioning vent, where a gentle continuous release becomes a blast every time the fan runs and the product empties in a fraction of the time, and never in the driver's sightline. And timing: do not give car fragrance in the first weeks to cover the new-car smell, because owners like it and it fades on its own as the interior settles - month two or three is honest and is also the empty window, since congratulations stop within a fortnight. Whatever the budget, fragrance is a finishing touch, never a fix.

| Gift | What it suits | Why it works for a new car | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jasmine hanging car perfume | The entry gift · ₹449 | The cheapest car item in the range and a complete gift on its own - floral rather than sweet, and best in a car that is parked in shade | ₹449 |
| Icy Mint hanging car perfume | Safest in Indian heat | Cool and dry, which is the register that holds up after an afternoon in the sun - the one to choose when you are guessing | ₹489 |
| Vetiver hanging car perfume | Somebody who dislikes sweet | Earthy and dry, the most grown-up of the eight, and the least likely to tire over a long daily commute | ₹509 |
| Car discovery set (pack of 3) | You do not know their taste | Three sprays so the owner picks - the sensible move, because a car is the least forgiving fragrance space there is | ₹699 |
| Mysore Orange Blossom car spray | Somebody particular about the car | Applied by hand when they want it rather than working continuously - which suits an owner who controls everything about the interior | ₹549 |
| SOSA Safar waterless car diffuser | Hours a week behind the wheel | The premium car object almost nobody buys for themselves - and it should be given with a nebuliser refill rather than empty | ₹3,999 |
Versailles
We sell a lot of car fragrance and we talk people out of buying it more often than you would expect. The reason is always the same. Somebody has just taken delivery, the car has that specific smell of a new interior, and the instinct is to buy something to put in it straight away. Please do not. Most owners like that smell, it fades on its own within a few weeks, and something arriving on top of it reads as though you thought their new car needed fixing. Month two or three, once it has started to smell of ordinary use, is the moment - and it has a second advantage, which is that everybody else has finished congratulating them by then.
The other thing people get wrong is the register. A car is not a small room. It holds a few cubic metres of air, it sits sealed in the sun for hours, and heat does something to sweetness that has to be experienced to be believed - and unlike a room, the driver cannot walk away from it. Dry, green, citrus and marine compositions behave. If you are guessing, guess cool. And one is the right number: two of anything in a car is usually too much by May.
Two honest things. Fragrance is a finishing touch and never a fix - if a car smells of damp, of something spilled under a seat or of smoke, deal with the cause and then scent a clean car, because adding one to the other is worse than either alone. And our Vaayu is not a car product. It is a waterless nebuliser built for roughly a thousand cubic metres - a showroom rather than a vehicle or a flat - and we would rather say so than sell you one.
