You have almost certainly been shown this sum already. One purchase is worth several lakhs, the machine costs a fraction of that, therefore it pays for itself many times over. It is a persuasive sentence and I am not going to make it, because there is no honest way to verify a single step in it.
Quick answers — read this first
How should a jeweller evaluate the cost of scenting a showroom? As an interior line, in the same category as lighting, seating, flooring and air conditioning. Those are things you approve because they set the standard of the room, not because anyone has demonstrated what each one returns. Scenting belongs in that group and it belongs at the bottom of it, after the layers that get read first. If it helps, ask what proportion of your annual interior and maintenance spending this represents. For most established showrooms the answer is a very small one, and that is the honest frame.

Why not compare the cost against the value of a single wedding purchase? Because the comparison only works if you accept a link that nobody can demonstrate, and I am not prepared to assert it. I have no way of knowing what a family would have done in an unscented room, and neither does anyone selling you a diffuser. The sum feels rigorous because it has numbers in it, but every number after the first is invented. If I made that argument to you, I would be asking you to buy on the strength of arithmetic I cannot support, which is a poor basis for any purchase.

So what is the honest case for spending anything at all? That the room where a family sits for two or three hours ought to meet the same standard as everything else you have paid for in that building, and right now the air in it is the one layer nobody has considered. That is a reason about your own standards rather than about anyone else's behaviour. It is also a reason that sometimes points at spending far less than you were planning, or nothing yet — if the entrance is cluttered, the seating is tired and the waiting is long, fix those first and come back to fragrance afterwards.
The short answer
Short answer: Not by dividing the value of a purchase by the price of a machine. That calculation cannot be verified at any step and a supplier who offers it is selling a feeling. Judge it as an interior line, beside lighting, seating and flooring, which you approve because they set the standard of a room rather than because each one has been proved.
The pick: If the room genuinely needs it, the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 buys control and uptime. If your floor is small, a Garden Bloom reed at ₹799 is the correct answer and the rest is better spent elsewhere.
Next step: Tell us what your entrance, seating and waiting look like before you ask us about fragrance. Ask for a Raipur scenting plan.
The sum you were shown is not a sumOne purchase divided by one machine proves nothingEvery number after the first one is inventedJudge it beside lighting, seating and flooringAsk what share of your interior budget it isSometimes the honest answer is a ₹799 reed
A calculation with invented inputs is not more rigorous than a judgement. It is a judgement wearing numbers, and it should be trusted less, not more.
Straight answer
How should a jeweller evaluate scenting against the value of a wedding purchase?
Not by putting the two numbers in the same sentence, and I want to explain why I am refusing rather than simply refusing. The sum you have been shown does not work. It goes: a wedding purchase is worth several lakhs, the machine costs a small fraction of that, therefore even a tiny effect pays for it many times over. Every step after the first is unverifiable. Nobody can tell you what a family would have done in an unscented room. Nobody can isolate the air in a building from the lighting, the staff, the stock, the pricing, the relationship your family has built over decades and the fact that a wedding was happening anyway. A calculation built on inputs that cannot be checked is not more rigorous than a plain judgement; it is a judgement with numbers painted on it, and it deserves less trust rather than more. I am not going to make that argument to sell a ₹11,999 machine, and I would be wary of anyone who does. Here is the frame I think is honest. Scenting is an interior decision. It sits in the same budget line as your lighting, your seating, your flooring, your air conditioning and the quality of the tea you serve. You approve those because they set the standard of a room that families spend hours in, not because anyone has demonstrated the return on each one. Nobody asks their electrician to prove what the downlights earn. Judge the air the same way. Then apply the order of operations. Scent is the last and cheapest layer of a room that already has to be right. If the entrance is cluttered, the seating is tired, the waiting is unmanaged and there is nowhere for a child to sit, all of that is read long before the air is, and all of it is cheaper to fix. I have told showroom owners to spend on seating and lighting that year and nothing else, and it was the right advice. And if the answer is yes, size it honestly. Many Raipur showroom floors are reed-sized, in which case ₹799 is the correct specification and the remainder belongs elsewhere. The machine earns its place on a large connected volume, or where you want the intensity locked and the hours fixed. None of this is a claim that any of it changes what a family buys. Ask us for a Raipur scenting plan.
Put it in the interior budget beside lighting and seating, ask what share of that budget it is, and fix the cheaper layers first. That is the whole evaluation.
What ₹11,999 buys in a showroom is control and uptime rather than a return: adjustable intensity set low, a key-lock, run windows matched to trading hours, waterless operation near display glass, and a 400ml tank running roughly 75 to 90 days so nobody has to think about it.

What the money actually buys

The most useful thing I can put above these cards is a discount on your own expectations. A great many Raipur jewellery floors are smaller than the volume a machine is built for, and in those rooms a reed at ₹799 is the right specification rather than the budget one. If the room does not need a machine, spend the difference on seating or lighting instead.

Three better questions than that sum

Three questions that are worth more than the sum you were shown.

1
First, what share of the interior budget is this?
The useful comparison is sideways, not against a purchase
Look at what you spent last year on the things that set the standard of your showroom: lighting and its maintenance, seating, flooring, air conditioning, the display cases, the cleaning contract, the tea. Now put the scenting figure next to that list rather than next to a customer's purchase. For most established jewellers it is a very small line, comparable to a year of good cleaning or a single set of chairs. That comparison tells you something real about proportion, whereas dividing it into a wedding purchase tells you nothing at all except how the person selling it would like you to feel. Proportion is a legitimate reason to say yes and also a legitimate reason to say not this year.
Tip: If the figure looks large beside your annual interior and maintenance spending, that is a genuine signal to wait rather than to squeeze it in.
2
Second, have the cheaper layers been done?
Scent is the last layer of a room that already has to be right
Order, light, sound, seating, the wait, somewhere for a child to sit, somewhere for an elderly relative to sit comfortably for two hours, a clean and unhurried tea service, a counter that is not stacked with paper. Every one of those is read before the air is, most of them are cheaper than any diffuser, and several of them are free. I have walked into showrooms where the owner wanted to discuss fragrance and the honest advice was to buy better chairs and remove three notices from the wall. Fragrance added to a room whose basics are unattended does not raise the room; it simply becomes one more thing in it, and a slightly conspicuous one.
3
Third, what are you actually buying at this price?
Control and uptime, not an effect on anybody
If you do decide to spend, be clear with yourself about what the money purchases. It purchases a level you can set once and lock, so nobody raises it before an important family arrives. It purchases a run window that matches trading hours, so the building is not scenting itself at midnight. It purchases waterless operation, which matters near display glass, velvet trays, paper records and a strongroom. And it purchases uptime — a tank measured in months rather than days, so no member of staff has to remember anything. Those are concrete, checkable, boring benefits, and they are the only ones I am willing to put my name to.
SOSA Vaayu
Boring, checkable benefits are the only kind worth paying for here.

The SOSA principle
Nobody asks their electrician to prove what the downlights earn. Judge the air in the room the same way you judged the light in it.
This is an interior standard decision, and we make no claim that it influences what a family chooses, which is precisely why the honest comparison is sideways rather than against a purchase.

Room by room

The refusal and the reframe, set out as a short checklist you can take into your own budget meeting.

The SOSA plan
How to evaluate this properly
Instead of asking Ask this
SOSA VaayuWhat does this return against a wedding purchase?
What share of our annual interior and maintenance budget is it? That comparison uses numbers you actually have.
Will it make families stay longer?
Would I be content for a family to sit in this room for three hours as it is today? If not, the fix is probably not fragrance.
Which fragrance sounds most expensive?
Which register belongs to the interior we already own, and how little of it can we get away with?
Should we buy the machine?
Is the connected volume genuinely large, and do we need the level locked? If neither, a reed at ₹799 is the answer.

If the underlying worry is that the showroom does not yet match the business, start with what a premium jewellery showroom should smell like, which puts fragrance in its proper place in the order. The level question — which decides comfort far more than the budget does — is in how strong for a two or three hour visit. SOSA is an independent Indian brand; the hotel-inspired scents are our own original interpretations, and no company named anywhere on this site is a SOSA customer or partner.

The SOSA specification, and when to spend less

Specify by the volume of connected air and by how much control you actually need, then put the figure beside your other interior lines rather than beside a customer's purchase. Spending less than you planned is a perfectly good result. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

I would rather lose this sale than support the arithmetic that usually accompanies it. Three limits to keep in the open: there is no SOSA refill product for the Vaayu at present, so plan the fill as part of the purchase conversation rather than assuming a cartridge is listed; we never scent a tea or refreshment service, a workshop bench or a strongroom; and coverage is volumetric, so measure the air rather than the carpet, because a double-height showroom holds far more of it than the floor plan suggests. A second machine belongs to a second volume of air, never to a second corner of the same room.

A note from Sonal

I am asked to do this arithmetic several times a month and I have stopped doing it. The sentence practically writes itself — one purchase is worth several lakhs, the machine costs a fraction of that — and it would probably move more machines than anything else I could say. The trouble is that I cannot check a single input after the first one, and neither can the person quoting it to you. So I would rather make a smaller argument that happens to be true.

The smaller argument is this. You have spent years and a good deal of money making a building that a family will sit in for an entire afternoon, and the air in that room is usually the one layer nobody has thought about. Attending to it is a reasonable thing to do for the same reason you attend to the lighting and the chairs. That is the whole case. It is not thrilling, and it does not need to be, because it is the kind of case that survives being examined.

So: put this beside your interior lines rather than beside a customer's purchase, and if the cheaper layers are not yet right, spend there first. This is an ambience decision and not a claim that it changes what a family buys, or anything therapeutic or medical, and it never masks a smell that has a source. Your staff's judgement on the level outranks mine. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Does scenting pay for itself against one large wedding purchase?
I will not make that argument. The calculation requires a link between the air in a room and what a family chooses, and nobody can demonstrate it, including me. A sum built from inputs that cannot be checked is not rigorous. Evaluate scenting as an interior line beside lighting, seating and flooring instead.
So how should a jeweller judge the expense?
The same way you judge your lighting, your seating and your flooring: as something that sets the standard of a room families sit in for hours. Put the figure beside your annual interior and maintenance spending and ask what share of it this represents. For most established showrooms that is a small line, and that is a real comparison rather than an invented one.
What does the machine actually buy at that price?
Control and uptime. A level you set once and key-lock so nobody raises it before an important family arrives, a run window matched to trading hours, waterless operation near display glass and paper records, operation under 38dB, and a 400ml tank lasting roughly 75 to 90 days so nobody has to remember anything. Those are the only benefits we describe.
Should we spend on fragrance at all this year?
Only after the layers a family reads first. Order, light, sound, seating, the wait, somewhere comfortable for an elderly relative to sit for two hours, an unhurried tea service. Most of those cost less than a diffuser and several cost nothing. If they are not right, spend there and come back to fragrance afterwards.
If we do proceed, what should we buy?
Whatever the volume of connected air asks for. A floor under about 300 sq ft is a reed at Rs 799 and nothing more. From roughly 1,500 sq ft of connected volume, or where you want the level locked and the hours fixed, the Vaayu at Rs 11,999. Buying above the room is the most common and least useful mistake.
SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
If the interior is cool rather than warm: Mountain Breeze — dry, unsweet, ungendered, the register for stone, glass and white light. From ₹849.
Judge it sideways, against your other interior lines
SOSA — Clinic Scenting for jewellers weighing an interior decision rather than a calculation
A floor under about 300 sq ft, one Garden Bloom reed at ₹799 and the rest spent on seating or light. From roughly 1,500 sq ft of connected volume, one Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a locked level and fixed hours. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
