Nobody writes to me asking for a lecture on raw materials. They write because they spent real money on something that smelled loud and flat, and they want to know how to not do that again. That is a checklist question, not a taste question, and a checklist is a thing I can actually hand over.
Quick answers — read this first
What can I actually check before I buy? Four things, and all four are on the listing or they are not. What the oil is carried in - an attar is a fragrance dissolved in something, and the something matters. Whether the notes are named or whether you are being sold an accord. What the drydown is built on, because that is the part you will wear for hours. And the smallest size you can buy, because a checklist is no use if the only way to test the answer costs you ₹1,199.

Which SOSA products fail my own checklist? Ours do not all pass, and I would rather say so. The SOSA perfume line is published with an accord only - Khayaal is a sparkling bergamot and neroli, Samundar an aquatic marine - so it answers question one and question four and not the middle two. The solid body perfumes at ₹459-₹549 publish no note list at all, so they fail question two outright. And the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is three full-size attars, not a sampler, and it does not include Adaa.

So what do I buy, and what does it cost? SOSA Adaa, the 3ml, at ₹379. It answers all four: carried on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base with no DPG and no alcohol; five notes named in order - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac, white musk; a drydown built on white musk; and a 3ml you can buy for less than four hundred rupees. It wears 6-8 hours, which is the only wear figure we publish. The 6ml is ₹669 and the 12ml ₹1,149 once you know.
The short answer
Short answer: check four things before you spend, on our listing or anybody's: what the oil is carried in, whether the notes are named or only an accord, what the drydown is built on, and the smallest size sold. SOSA Adaa answers all four - a jojoba and sandalwood base with no DPG and no alcohol, five published notes, a white musk drydown, and a 3ml at ₹379 that wears 6-8 hours. SOSA's perfume line publishes an accord only and the solid body perfumes publish no note list at all, so both fail question two.
The pick: the 3ml of SOSA Adaa at ₹379 - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk, alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, and it wears 6-8 hours. If what you want is the most raw material in the range rather than the lightest composition, SOSA Nawaab at ₹399 for 3ml is the most expensive attar we make to fill, and it carries white royal oud, aged tobacco and leather.
Next step: send me the listing of anything you are about to buy, ours or not, and I will tell you which of the four questions it answers and which it leaves blank - Ask for an attar recommendation.
Four questions to ask any attar listing, ours includedAdaa 3ml, ₹379 - the bottle that answers all four1. The carrier: jojoba and sandalwood, no DPG2. Notes named, not an accord. 3. The drydown4. The smallest size, which here is 3mlOur own perfume line answers two of the four
The last line is the one that makes the rest of it worth reading. A checklist that only ever fails other people's products is not a checklist, it is an advertisement.
SOSA Adaa - tap through and run the four questions on the listing yourself
Straight answer
What should somebody look for when choosing an attar, if cheap-smelling perfume is the thing they want to avoid?
Four things, and then one bottle: SOSA Adaa, the 3ml, at ₹379. Take the checklist first, because it will outlive this page and it is meant to be used on any listing, ours included. One: what is the oil carried in. An attar is not neat fragrance, it is fragrance dissolved in something, and the carrier is most of what is in the bottle. Ours is a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, alcohol-free, with no DPG carriers. If a listing does not tell you, that is the answer to your question. Two: are the notes named, or are you being sold an accord. A named note list can be checked against your own nose; an accord is only a direction of travel. Three: what is the drydown built on, because the first ten minutes belong to the shop and the next six hours belong to you. Four: what is the smallest size you can buy, because a checklist you cannot afford to test is a hobby. Now the honest part, where I run it on us. SOSA makes exactly four attars - Adaa, Ameeri, Mastani and Nawaab - and all four publish their notes in full and sit on the same alcohol-free base. Our perfume line does not: Khayaal is published as a sparkling bergamot and neroli and Samundar as an aquatic marine, with no note list and no wear figure, so it answers two of the four questions and no more. Our solid body perfumes at ₹459-₹549 publish no note list at all, which is why this page will not tell you how one of them smells. And the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani at full size, not a sampler, and it excludes Adaa - so it is the wrong way to test anything. What passes all four is Adaa: bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk, hand-blended in Pune by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer, and it wears 6-8 hours, which is the only longevity figure SOSA publishes for anything. Buy the 3ml at ₹379 and nothing larger, because we sell no attar sampler, so the 3ml is the sample. Two disclosures I owe you in the same breath. Adaa carries jasmine sambac, in a supporting role rather than as the subject, and if jasmine is on your no list then this is not your bottle and I will say so rather than sell it to you. And none of the above is an outcome claim: SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance because there is no honest way to measure one, and no health or skin-safety claim of any kind - what a material does on your skin is a question for a doctor rather than for a perfumer. Ask for an attar recommendation and send me the listing you are staring at.
Ask four things of any listing: the carrier, whether the notes are named, what the drydown is built on, and the smallest size sold. Adaa answers all four at ₹379 for 3ml; our own perfume line answers two, the solid body perfumes answer one, and the Pack of 3 is not a sampler.
The bottle is one SOSA Adaa - bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, white musk in the drydown. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, and it wears 6-8 hours. ₹379 for the 3ml, which is the size to test with.

The checklist, in four lines
The carrier, the note list, the drydown and the smallest size - four things a listing either tells you or does not

The bottle, and the size to buy

One attar that answers the whole checklist, and one that answers it with the most raw material in the range. Both images link through to the product pages, which is the point: run the four questions on the listing yourself rather than taking my word for any of it.

SOSA Adaa
For a reader who wants to check before they spend
SOSA Adaa, 3ml
Bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, white musk in the drydown. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, hand-blended in Pune, and it wears 6-8 hours. The lightest of our four attars. ₹379 for the 3ml, which is the size to test with.
From ₹379
SOSA Nawaab
If the question underneath yours is raw material
SOSA Nawaab, 3ml
White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, with no synthetic oudh in it. The most expensive attar in the line to fill, and the heaviest thing we make for skin - so if oud, tobacco or leather is out for you, this one is out with them. ₹399 for the 3ml.
From ₹399
SOSA Adaa
The attar that answers all four checklist questions
SOSA Adaa
3ml, 6ml and 12ml at ₹379, ₹669 and ₹1,149. Published notes: bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. An alcohol-free perfume oil with no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, blended to IFRA standards, phthalate-free, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune. It wears 6-8 hours, which is the only longevity figure SOSA publishes. The lightest attar in the range: no oud, no vanilla, no rose.

The four questions, in order

In the order that they are worth asking, which is not the order a listing puts them in. The first one is the one almost nobody asks and it accounts for most of the bottle.

1
Ask what it is carried in
Most of what is in the bottle is not the fragrance, and the carrier is the part nobody prints
An attar is a concentrate dissolved in something. That something is the majority of the volume, and it decides how the composition sits and how it opens. Ours is a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, alcohol-free, with no DPG carriers - DPG being a common synthetic diluent that costs very little and smells of almost nothing. I am not going to tell you what is in anybody else's bottle, because I do not know. I am telling you to ask, and to notice that a listing which will not say is still telling you something. This is the question with the biggest gap between how much it matters and how often it is printed.
Tip: If a listing names no carrier at all, treat that as a blank answer rather than a good one.

2
Then ask for names, not adjectives
A named note list can be checked against your own nose; an accord cannot be
All four SOSA attars publish their notes in full, in order, which is the only reason this cluster can rule things out honestly. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. Ameeri is Taif rose, real Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh, with no synthetic rose in it. Mastani carries real jasmine sambac and real rose absolute over sandalwood, oudh, vanilla and tonka. Nawaab is white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, with no synthetic oudh. Now run the same question on our other shelves: the perfume line publishes an accord and nothing more, and the solid body perfumes publish no notes at all.
Tip: Read the first two notes as the subject of the composition and the last two as what you will actually wear.
SOSA Ameeri
One bottle of Ameeri from ₹385 is the whole purchase here.

3
And ask what the test costs
The smallest size a house sells tells you how much it expects you to gamble
A checklist is worthless if the only way to test the answer is a blind buy at the top of the range. Our smallest attar is 3ml and it is ₹379 for Adaa, ₹385 for Ameeri, ₹389 for Mastani and ₹399 for Nawaab, and that 3ml is the sample size, because SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set. The Pack of 3 is not one either: it is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani at full size for ₹1,055, and it does not contain Adaa. So buy one 3ml of one attar, and wear it a full day before you decide anything. A wear test is a preference test, never a safety test.

The SOSA principle
A checklist is only worth having if it can be run against the house that wrote it, which is why this one asks what SOSA does not publish as well as what it does.
Our four attars answer all four questions; our perfume line answers two of them and our solid body perfumes answer one, and I would rather you heard that here.
SOSA Adaa
The carrier, published: SOSA Adaa is an alcohol-free perfume oil with no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base. ₹379 for the 3ml.

The checklist as a table

Worth keeping open in another tab the next time you are reading a fragrance listing, whoever wrote it.

The SOSA shortlist
Four questions, what a good answer looks like, and where SOSA lands on each
The question to ask What to do
SOSA AdaaWhat is the oil carried in?
A named carrier. Ours is a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, alcohol-free, with no DPG carriers. A listing that names no carrier has not answered you, and that is worth knowing before you spend.
Are the notes named, or is it an accord?
Named, in order, top to base. All four SOSA attars publish theirs. Our perfume line publishes an accord only, and our solid body perfumes publish no note list at all.
SOSA AmeeriWhat is the drydown built on?
The last notes on the list, because they are the slow ones. Adaa's is white musk. Ameeri's is sandalwood and soft oudh. Nawaab's is leather and amber. Mastani's is vanilla and tonka.
Is the wear figure published, and for what?
SOSA publishes 6-8 hours for the attars and nothing at all for the perfume line or the solid body perfumes, so no figure is given for those anywhere on this page.
What is the smallest size sold?
3ml, at ₹379 to ₹399 depending on the attar. That is the sample size, because there is no sampler and no discovery set. The Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is three full bottles and excludes Adaa.
Who blended it, and where?
Composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune, to IFRA standards and phthalate-free. That is a fact about manufacture, not a promise about what it will do.

If what you actually want is the step-by-step version of the test rather than the questions, that is written out in how to avoid blind-buying an attar that smells cheap, which is the method page for this family and ends on one 3ml and a full day of wearing it. And if the question underneath yours is why one composition reads as more refined than another in the first place, that is what makes one perfume smell more refined than another, which uses Nawaab as the worked example because it is the most expensive of the four to fill. SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and every attar named here is its own composition.

SOSA Adaa
The note list, published in full: Bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk, in that order - so you can rule it out yourself if jasmine is on your list.
One bottle, one size, and a listing you can check
SOSA Adaa is ₹379 for 3ml - and every claim on this page about it is printed on its own product listing.

If a listing will not tell you what the oil is carried in, it has still answered your question.

Why this particular bottle, for this particular reader
Five named notes, a published carrier, a published wear figure and a 3ml you can afford to be wrong about

The SOSA attar specification

SOSA makes exactly four attars, and all four publish their notes in full, which is the only reason a page like this can exist. Below is the one I am recommending and the one with the most raw material in it, plus the honest note about where our own range stops answering. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

The SOSA attar specification
Two attars that answer the whole checklist, and one shelf that does not
Attar or perfume Best for Why it works Price
SOSA Adaa A reader who wants to check the listing before they spend Bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk, all published in order. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, jojoba and sandalwood base, wears 6-8 hours. ₹379 for the 3ml, which is the sample size ₹379

Run the checklist and most of the argument disappears, because the answers are either printed or they are not. SOSA makes exactly four attars, all four publish their notes, and the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is three full-size bottles rather than a sampler and excludes Adaa. The only longevity figure SOSA publishes is that the attars wear 6-8 hours; nothing is published for the perfume line or for the solid body perfumes, so no figure appears for them here, and no note list is published for the solids at all, which is why this page never describes how one of them smells. SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance, because there is no honest way to measure one - nothing about compliments, nothing about being noticed - and makes no health or skin-safety claim of any kind, because what a material does on your skin is a question for a doctor rather than for a perfumer. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only other thing I will promise you. Ask for an attar recommendation before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal

The letters that lead to this page are usually about money rather than about smell. Somebody spent two thousand rupees on something that smelled sharp for ten minutes and like nothing at all by lunch, and what they want is not a recommendation, it is a way of not being had again. I have a lot of sympathy for that, and I notice that nobody in this trade ever hands over a checklist that their own products might fail.

So here is mine, and it is only four questions. What is the oil carried in, because the carrier is most of the bottle and ours is a jojoba and sandalwood base with no alcohol and no DPG. Are the notes named or is it an accord, because a named list can be checked and an adjective cannot. What is the drydown built on, because the opening belongs to the shop and the drydown belongs to you. And what does the smallest size cost, because a test you cannot afford is not a test. Run those on our perfume line and it answers two of them; run them on our solid body perfumes, where no notes are published at all, and it answers one.

My answer is one bottle and the smallest size of it: Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml, which is the sample size because we sell no sampler. If your real question is raw material rather than lightness, Nawaab at ₹399 is the most expensive of the four to fill, with its oud, aged tobacco and leather named so you can refuse it. The Pack of 3 is not a sampler and does not include Adaa. Adaa carries jasmine sambac and I would rather you heard it from me. Wears 6-8 hours is the only figure we publish, we make no outcome claim and no health claim, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

I hate cheap-smelling perfumes - what should I look for when choosing an attar?
Four things, on any listing including ours. What the oil is carried in: SOSA attars are alcohol-free with no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base. Whether the notes are named or you are being sold an accord. What the drydown is built on, since that is the part you wear for hours. And the smallest size sold, because a test you cannot afford is not a test. SOSA Adaa answers all four at Rs 379 for 3ml and wears 6-8 hours.
Why does the carrier matter so much?
Because it is most of what is in the bottle. An attar is a concentrate dissolved in something, and that something decides how the composition sits and how it opens. SOSA uses a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base with no alcohol and no DPG carriers, DPG being a common synthetic diluent that is cheap and smells of very little. I cannot tell you what is in anyone else's bottle. I can tell you to ask, and to treat a listing that names no carrier as a blank answer.
Which SOSA products do not answer the checklist?
The SOSA perfume line publishes an accord only, with no note list and no wear figure, so it answers the carrier and the size questions and not the middle two. The solid body perfumes at Rs 459 to Rs 549 publish no note list at all. And the Pack of 3 at Rs 1,055 is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani at full size rather than a sampler, and it does not include Adaa, so it is the wrong way to test anything.
Is a bigger bottle better value if I am trying to avoid a bad buy?
Not while you are still testing. SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, so the 3ml at Rs 379 to Rs 399 is the sample size, and that is the size to buy first. Adaa is Rs 379 for 3ml, Rs 669 for 6ml and Rs 1,149 for 12ml, so the difference between being right and being wrong is about seven hundred and seventy rupees. Buy the 3ml, wear it a full day, then size up.
Does a published note list mean a fragrance is better made?
No, and I will not pretend otherwise. A published note list means it is checkable, which is a different thing. It lets you rule a bottle out before you buy rather than after, which is the whole service this page is trying to offer. All four SOSA attars publish their notes in order, along with the carrier and the 6-8 hour wear figure. What none of that tells you is whether you will like it, and there is no honest way for me to measure that for you.
SOSA Adaa
And the honest blank: No note list is published for our solid body perfumes at ₹459-₹549, so this page describes the format and never how one of them smells.
Four questions, and the house that wrote them answers first
SOSA — Attars and Perfume Oils for a reader who wants to check before they spend
SOSA Adaa (₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml, ₹1,149 for 12ml) is bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk, published in order - an alcohol-free perfume oil with no DPG carriers on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, hand-blended in Pune to IFRA standards, and it wears 6-8 hours, which is the only longevity figure SOSA publishes. The perfume line publishes an accord only and the solid body perfumes publish no note list at all, so both are named here as blanks rather than sold as answers. The Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is not a sampler and excludes Adaa. Adaa's jasmine sambac is disclosed rather than buried. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. The products named are SOSA's own; the method - shop the note you have ruled out, not the note you hope for - applies to any brand.

Facts verified 17 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: SOSA makes four attars, each sold in three sizes, 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. SOSA Adaa is ₹379, ₹669 and ₹1,149, with published notes of bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. SOSA Ameeri is ₹385, ₹679 and ₹1,165, with published notes of Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh. SOSA Mastani is ₹389, ₹685 and ₹1,179, with published notes of night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, Mysore sandalwood, oudh, vanilla and tonka. SOSA Nawaab is ₹399, ₹699 and ₹1,199, with published notes of white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber. All four are alcohol-free perfume oils with no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune, and the only longevity figure SOSA publishes for them is that they wear 6-8 hours. The Pack of 3 (₹1,055, ₹1,859 and ₹3,189) is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, and it does not include Adaa. The SOSA perfume line - including Khayaal and Samundar - comes in 10ml, 50ml and 100ml and is referred to on these pages by its SOSA name and its accord only. SOSA publishes no note list and no longevity figure for the solid body perfumes or for the perfume line, so neither is given here, and how a solid body perfume smells is never described. SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, which is why the 3ml is the sample size and is what these pages recommend buying first. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only logistics fact stated on these pages. Choosing a fragrance is a matter of preference: SOSA makes no health, skin-safety, hypoallergenic, therapeutic or wellbeing claim for any fragrance, makes no claim about compliments, confidence or any other outcome of wearing one, and offers nothing here as medical advice - a reaction on skin is a conversation for a doctor rather than for a perfumer. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
