Fragrance is usually bought at the end of a project, as an object, by whoever remembers. Treated properly it is a material with a specification: a profile, an intensity, a position and a schedule, agreed at the same moment as the stone and the joinery. Here is how to write those four lines, and the one prerequisite that makes or breaks all of them.
Quick answers — read this first
How do you use fragrance as part of interior design? Specify it in four lines, like any other finish. Profile: one scent for the whole floor, chosen against the dominant materials rather than against a season. Intensity: set with the nose of somebody who has just walked in, then locked. Position: on the air path, near the entrance airflow or the air-conditioning return, not on a console for display. Schedule: two low windows a day rather than one burst before guests. A SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, and takes all four.
Where should a diffuser be placed in a home? Where the air already moves, which is rarely the middle of a living room. A hall or passage near the entrance airflow, or beside the air-conditioning return so the existing airflow distributes it. Height helps: chest height or above works better than floor level. A SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is 165 x 80.5 x 215mm and 0.9kg, so it can stand on a console, wall mount above a shoe cabinet, or fix to HVAC.
Should different rooms have different scents? No, in a home. One fragrance across a floor is what makes a house read as one place; several scents at eight foot intervals read as several small rooms, and they collide in the doorways where air mixes. Use one profile from one machine and vary only the intensity if a bedroom needs to be lighter. One SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, so a whole floor from one point is normal rather than ambitious.
The short answer
Short answer: specify fragrance in four lines like a finish - one profile per floor chosen against the materials, an intensity set with a visitor's nose, a position on the air path rather than on display, and a run schedule. One SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, and takes all four.
The pick: one profile for the whole floor, run low from a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) placed on the entrance air path or beside the air-conditioning return, on two short daily windows.
Next step: send the floor plan with the AC returns marked and we will place the machine on it - ask us what fits your home.
Write these four lines into the project and fragrance stops being an afterthought bought at handover. Miss the prerequisite line and none of the other four will help you.
How do you specify fragrance as part of an interior scheme?
Four lines, plus a prerequisite. Line one, profile. Choose one scent for the whole floor, and choose it against the dominant materials rather than against a season. Homes with a lot of wood, leather, stone and warm neutral textiles carry dry woody and tea-like profiles well and turn sweet gourmand ones cloying by the second week. Cooler, harder, more minimal interiors of glass, lacquer and pale stone take clean citrus, white florals and light musks. A single profile also has to survive Indian cooking, which is a genuine constraint: anything sweet fights masala and loses. Line two, intensity. Set it with the nose of a person who has just come in from outside, because you cannot smell your own home after a few minutes. The target is a scent noticed in the first ten seconds and forgotten by minute five. Almost every home I visit is set at least one step too high. Line three, position. This is where most schemes go wrong: the diffuser gets placed where it looks good, on a console in the living room, when it should be placed where the air moves. A hall or passage near the entrance airflow, or beside the air-conditioning return, will carry a fragrance through a whole floor. The middle of a living room will not. Height helps too - chest height or above beats floor level. Line four, schedule. Two low windows a day, typically one in the morning and one in the early evening, beats a single strong burst before guests. If you are expecting people, start 30 to 45 minutes before they arrive, not as the bell goes, so the fragrance has settled rather than announcing itself. The prerequisite: the space must be aired, deep cleaned and finished off-gassing before any of this. Fresh paint, adhesives, engineered board and new upholstery all release smell for weeks, and scent laid over that gives you both at once. The machine that takes all four lines is a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999): waterless cold-air nebulisation from a 400ml tank of pure fragrance oil lasting up to 75 days, rated to 1000m³ or about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, under 38dB, with adjustable intensity, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, and freestanding, wall or HVAC mounting at 165 x 80.5 x 215mm. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. A free sensory scenting plan will write the four lines with you, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Profile, intensity, position, schedule - four lines, written at the same time as the finishes. Position follows the air rather than the furniture, and nothing works until the space has been aired and cleaned.
One machine takes all four lines of the specification. The SOSA Vaayu is waterless, rated to 1000m³ (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), runs under 38dB on 400ml of pure fragrance oil for up to 75 days, and mounts freestanding, on a wall or on HVAC at 165 x 80.5 x 215mm.
A specification needs a real product with real numbers behind it, so here is ours: one machine, three photographs, each linking to the live product page where the full specification sits.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 400ml of pure fragrance oil up to 75 days a fill, adjustable intensity, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, under 38dB, DC 12V/1A at 5W, auto-stop and key-lock.
165 x 80.5 x 215mm and 0.9kg. It stands on a console or shelf, wall mounts above a shoe cabinet or a door head, or fixes to the HVAC so the existing airflow carries the fragrance.
The tank takes pure fragrance oil, not a water-based blend, so nothing damp is put into the room. No heat either, which is why it suits homes with veneer, joinery, art, books, leather and textiles.
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), a 400ml pure-oil tank lasting up to 75 days, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers with adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, 165 x 80.5 x 215mm, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India.
How to specify fragrance the way you specify a finish
Three rules do most of the work here, and each one is a mistake I see repeated in otherwise excellent schemes.
1
One profile per floor
Several scents in one home collide in the doorways
The instinct to give each room its own character is a good instinct applied to the wrong channel. Air mixes. Two fragrances eight feet apart do not stay in their rooms - they meet in the doorway and in the corridor and produce a third smell that nobody chose. More importantly, a single scent across a floor is precisely what makes a house read as one home rather than a series of small rooms, and it is the thing hotels do that people find so hard to name. Choose the profile against the dominant materials: dry woods and tea for warm timber, leather and stone; clean citrus, white florals and light musk for cooler, harder, more minimal schemes. Then use it everywhere, and vary only intensity - a bedroom can run a step lighter than a hall.
Tip: one profile per floor. Vary the level, never the scent.
One Vaayu covers 1000m³ - about 2,000-3,000 sq ft - so a whole floor from one point is the normal case.
The right place is rarely the place that looks right
This is the single most common specification error. The machine is put where it looks tidy - the living room console, a shelf in the centre of the plan - and it underperforms, so somebody turns it up, and now there is a strong smell in one room and nothing elsewhere. Scent travels with moving air, so the machine belongs where the home already moves air: the hall or passage near the entrance, or immediately beside the return of the air conditioning, which will distribute it through every room on that loop. Height matters as well, since chest height or above disperses far better than a low table. And note the volume rule as you place it - one machine covers a connected volume, so a floor closed off by a staircase door is a separate problem.
Freestanding, wall mounted or HVAC mounted, at 0.9kg, so the right position is nearly always achievable.
Anything that depends on somebody remembering will drift
A specification that ends with "and light a candle in the evening" is not a specification, it is a hope. Any layer that requires a daily human action will drift within a month, and drift is what makes a house feel ordinary. Two low windows a day on a timer is what most homes settle on: one that starts shortly before the household wakes, one in the early evening. For guests, start 30 to 45 minutes before arrival rather than as the bell rings, so the fragrance has diffused and dropped to a settled level instead of announcing itself. And once the schedule is right, lock it - key-lock exists precisely so that a correctly set machine is not adjusted by everybody who walks past it.
Tip: 30 to 45 minutes before guests, never as they arrive.
1h, 4h, 8h and 24h timers by Bluetooth app or onboard buttons, plus auto-stop and key-lock.
This is the specification in table form. Four lines, one prerequisite, and the reason each one matters.

What to specify
Profile
One scent for the whole floor, chosen against the dominant materials. Dry woods and tea for warm timber, leather and stone; clean citrus, white floral and light musk for cool minimal schemes.
Intensity
Set with the nose of somebody arriving from outside. Noticed in the first ten seconds, forgotten by minute five. Nearly every home is set one step too high.
Position
On the air path - hall near the entrance airflow, or beside the air-conditioning return - at chest height or above. Not the centre of the living room.
Schedule and machine
Two low windows a day on a timer, 30 to 45 minutes ahead of guests. One SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers and key-lock. View →
One machine, one profile, one position, one schedule. Waterless, so there is no damp and nothing settling on wood, art, books or upholstery. Pure fragrance oil in its own 400ml tank, freestanding, wall mounted or HVAC mounted, made in India. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The prerequisite line is the one that gets skipped and the one that matters most: air the space, deep clean it, and let paint, adhesives, engineered board and new upholstery finish off-gassing before you scent anything. Fragrance cannot cover damp, cooking, pet odour or a new-build smell, it works alongside ventilation and cleaning rather than instead of them, and it is not an air purifier. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. If you want the four lines written for a specific plan, ask us what fits your home.

A note from Sonal
The difference between fragrance that works in a home and fragrance that does not is almost never the oil. It is that somebody wrote it down. A profile, a level, a position and a schedule, agreed at the same moment as the stone and the joinery, produce a house that smells the same on a wet Wednesday as it did on the day the photographs were taken. A bottle bought at the end of the project produces a nice smell in one room for three weeks.
If I could change one habit, it would be placement. Almost everybody puts the machine where it looks good, and almost nobody puts it where the air moves. Put it in the hall or beside the air-conditioning return, at chest height or above, and one Vaayu covering 1000m³ - about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft - will do a whole floor. Put it on a living room console and you will be turning it up for the rest of its life.
And the honest part. Fragrance works alongside ventilation and cleaning and never instead of them. It cannot cover damp, cooking, a musty cupboard or a new interior still off-gassing, and it is not an air purifier - we make no health claim for it. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
How do you specify fragrance in an interior scheme?
In four lines, written with the finishes rather than at handover. Profile: one scent for the whole floor, chosen against the dominant materials. Intensity: set with the nose of somebody who has just walked in, then locked. Position: on the air path, near the entrance airflow or the air-conditioning return, at chest height or above. Schedule: two low windows a day rather than one burst before guests.
Where is the best place to put a diffuser in a house?
Where air already moves. A hall or passage near the entrance airflow, or immediately beside the air-conditioning return so the existing airflow distributes it through every room on that loop. Height helps, so chest height or above beats a low table. The middle of the living room looks right and works badly.
Should each room have its own fragrance?
Not in a home. Air mixes, so two scents eight feet apart meet in the doorway and produce a third smell nobody chose. One profile across a floor is what makes a house read as one place rather than a series of rooms. Vary the intensity if a bedroom should be lighter, but keep the scent the same.
Which fragrance profiles suit which interiors?
Warm schemes with timber, leather, stone and neutral textiles carry dry woody, tea and soft amber profiles well. Cooler, harder, minimal schemes of glass, lacquer and pale stone take clean citrus, white floral and light musk. In Indian homes, avoid heavy sweet gourmands, which fight cooking smells and turn cloying by the second week.
When in a project should fragrance be introduced?
After the space has been aired, deep cleaned and allowed to finish off-gassing, and before handover. Fresh paint, adhesives, engineered board and new upholstery all release smell for weeks, and fragrance laid over that gives you both at once. Scent the clean, cured space, then set the level and lock it.
