A musty, damp smell is the one I am most careful about, because it is a warning sign, not a scent gap. It means moisture, and possibly mould, and no fragrance fixes that. So I am going to ask you to do the real work first. Once the damp is properly dealt with, scent has its place, and I will show you where.
Quick answers — read this first
Can fragrance remove a damp smell? No. A damp smell means moisture or mould. Fragrance over it is a cover-up. You have to find and fix the source of the damp.

What causes it? Leaks, rising damp, condensation, poor ventilation and wet materials that never dry out fully.

When does scent help? Only after the space is dry and any mould is properly cleaned. Then a reed diffuser keeps it fresh.
The short answer
Find the moisture: Leaks, condensation, rising damp, wet walls or fabrics.
Fix and dry: Stop the water source, then dry the space thoroughly; use a dehumidifier if needed.
Deal with mould: Clean mould properly and improve airflow so it does not return.
Then scent: Only once dry, add a flame-free SOSA reed diffuser (₹749).
Reed diffuser vs scented candle (illustrative, not clinical)SOSA reed diffuser — flame-free, weeks of continuous scentScented candle — warmth + glow, scent while litCheap gel air freshener — fades fast, often synthetic
Illustrative only. A reed diffuser gives a steady, flame-free background scent for weeks; a candle adds warmth and light but scents mainly while burning.
Straight answer
How do I get rid of a damp, musty smell in my home?
By finding and fixing the moisture causing it, not by adding fragrance. A damp or musty smell is a sign of excess moisture and often mould, so look for the source: a leak, rising damp, condensation on cold walls, or wet materials that never dry out. Stop the water at its source, dry the space thoroughly, use a dehumidifier or better ventilation if the air stays humid, and clean any mould properly. This is real remediation and it is the only thing that removes the smell. Fragrance is useless against active damp and only masks it. Once the space is dry and clean, a flame-free reed diffuser keeps it pleasantly fresh as a finishing layer.
Damp smell means moisture. Find it, fix it, dry it, treat mould, and only then add scent.
Space dry and mould-free at last? Add a flame-free freshness layer.

Find and fix the damp, because nothing else works

I am going to be firmer here than anywhere else in these guides, because it is the responsible thing to do. A damp, musty smell is not a fragrance problem and you cannot perfume your way out of it. It is moisture, and where there is persistent moisture there is often mould, which can affect both your home and your health. Adding scent over it hides the warning and lets the real problem grow. Please do not do that.

That musty smell is caused by microbial growth in damp materials. Remove the moisture and clean the growth, and the smell has nothing to feed it. Leave the moisture and no fragrance will hold against it.

So the work is remediation, and it comes first. Find the source of the moisture. It might be an obvious leak from a pipe, a roof or a window. It might be rising damp in a wall. It might be condensation forming on cold surfaces in a poorly ventilated room, which is very common in humid weather. Wet materials that never dry, a mattress against a cold wall, boxes stored in a damp corner, a cupboard with no airflow, all hold and breed the smell.

Stop the water at its source, then dry the space out thoroughly. Improve ventilation so humid air can leave. If the air stays heavy, a dehumidifier really earns its keep in a damp climate. Where you find mould, clean it properly rather than wiping it and hoping; if it is widespread or keeps returning, that is a job for a professional, because it points to a structural moisture problem.

If a smell returns within days of cleaning, the moisture source is still active. Do not reach for a stronger scent; go back and find the water. The smell is telling you the truth that the fragrance would hide.

Only once it is dry, the scent layer

When the space is truly dry, the moisture source is fixed and any mould is cleaned, the musty smell goes on its own, because you have removed what caused it. Now, and only now, fragrance has an honest job. A freshly dried room can still feel a little flat or closed, and a scent layer lifts it and makes it feel cared for again.

Myth: a strong reed diffuser or candle can fix a damp room. It cannot. At best it masks the warning sign for a few hours. The only fix for damp is removing the moisture; scent is for afterwards.

For that finishing layer I would use a flame-free reed diffuser, because it runs continuously and suits a room you want to keep feeling fresh. A clean, airy scent works best here: Morning Freshness or Mountain Breeze read as just-aired rather than heavy. In a previously stuffy cupboard or corner, a small reed diffuser keeps a light scent moving once the space is dry and ventilated. Keep the honesty in place: SOSA scent makes a dry, clean room lovely, and it does nothing for a wet one. Fix the damp, then enjoy the fragrance.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, and home fragrance is where I get to think room by room - a flame-free reed diffuser for the hall, a hand-poured candle for the evening, a wax melt when you want to change the mood without a match.

Our reed diffusers are alcohol-free and flame-free, our candles hand-poured from a natural soy blend, all built from real materials and IFRA-compliant. I would rather tell you which format suits which room than sell you the most expensive one.

Buy well, not by reflex. If another brand is honestly made, light it happily. I just wanted home scent with the precision of a trained nose and a label that tells you the truth.

Frequently asked questions

Will a reed diffuser get rid of a damp smell?
No. A damp smell means moisture and often mould, which fragrance cannot remove. You have to find and fix the moisture source and dry the space first. A reed diffuser only helps afterwards, as a finishing freshness layer in a room that is already dry and clean.
What actually removes a musty smell?
Removing the moisture that causes it. Find the leak, condensation or rising damp, stop it, dry the space thoroughly, improve ventilation, and clean any mould properly. Once the source is gone, the smell goes with it. Fragrance comes only after that.
Is it safe to just cover a damp smell with fragrance?
I would strongly advise against it. The smell is a warning sign of moisture and possible mould, which can affect your home and health. Masking it lets the real problem grow unseen. Fix the damp first; scent is never a substitute for remediation.
My cupboard smells musty. What should I do?
Air it out, check for any moisture or condensation, and make sure items inside are fully dry before storing them. Improve airflow. Once it is dry, a small reed diffuser keeps a light, fresh scent moving. If the mustiness returns quickly, there is still moisture to find.
Which SOSA scent suits a room I have just dried out?
A clean, airy one such as Morning Freshness or Mountain Breeze, which read as just-aired rather than heavy. Use a flame-free reed diffuser so it runs continuously and keeps the dried space feeling fresh.
