The real causes, and how to fix them
I want to be straight with you, because the bathroom is where people waste the most money on scent. A spray over a smelly bathroom buys you about three minutes. The smell comes back because its cause is still there, and the cause is almost always one of three things: poor airflow, a drain, or damp.
Start with airflow. A bathroom holds humidity, and humid air left standing turns stale and smells. Run the exhaust fan during and after a shower, or open a window, so that damp air leaves the room rather than soaking into the walls and grout. This one habit does more than any fragrance.
Next, the drain. If your bathroom has a floor drain you rarely use, its water trap dries out and lets smell up from the pipe. Pour a mug of water down it once a week and the seal holds. While you are there, clear hair and soap from the drains that do get used, because that build-up smells as it breaks down. Check around the toilet base and under the basin for any slow leak, which can cause a persistent smell.
Damp fabric is the quiet culprit. A bathmat that never fully dries, a towel left bunched up, a loofah that stays wet: each of these breeds the smell you keep blaming on the toilet. Hang everything to dry properly and wash bathmats often.
If you see black spotting on grout or ceiling, that is mould, and it is a cleaning and moisture job, not a fragrance job. Clean it properly and improve ventilation so it does not return. Scent over mould is exactly the kind of cover-up I would never recommend.
Then, the scent layer
With the room dry, aired and the drain sealed, the bathroom will mostly look after itself, and now scent makes it a pleasure rather than a problem.
