How to Keep a Large Home Smelling Fresh When Windows Stay Closed

By separating two things that get confused. Fresh air means new air from outside, and in a shut house you have very little of it. Moving air means the air you already have not sitting still, and you can have as much of that as you like. Moving air is what actually prevents musty smells, because still air against a cool surface is where moisture settles and growth begins. So, first, run the fans. A dehumidifier does this directly and is the single most effective appliance for a shut, humid home; the air conditioner's dry mode does a version of the same thing, and ordinary cooling removes some moisture as a by-product. Clean the AC filters through the season, because a dirty filter or a blocked drain line in the indoor unit becomes its own smell.
