The most useful document in a pathology scenting decision is not a product page, it is the mechanical drawing on your facilities engineer's shelf. Ask for it first, because on some systems it ends the conversation.
Quick answers — read this first
How should HVAC airflow affect where I put a scent machine? It should decide it. Three features on the drawing matter: where the supply diffusers blow, where the returns draw, and whether the return serving your public zone also serves the back of house. Keep the source out of the supply blast, work with the return path rather than against it, and if the return is shared, accept that placement alone cannot hold your exclusion list. Get the drawing before you shortlist a machine, not after it arrives.
Why is the supply diffuser the wrong place? Because a supply diffuser is a high-velocity jet, and output released into it gets thrown across the room and diluted almost immediately. You get a strong streak along the throw and very little anywhere else, which reads as inconsistent rather than strong, and it tends to push output toward whatever the throw is aimed at - frequently a corridor. Put the source somewhere the air is moving gently, away from the diffuser face, roughly a metre up on a wall.
What if reception and the working rooms share a return? Then your zone map cannot be enforced by placement, because a shared return collects from everywhere it serves and redistributes it through the same system. This is common and it is not a fault in the building. The honest conclusions are to run much lower across the whole floor, to run only during hours when the back of house is not in use, or to leave it unscented. I would rather tell you that than sell you a machine on a promise the ducting will not keep.
The short answer
Short answer: It should decide the placement entirely. Read the mechanical drawing first: keep the source out of the supply blast, which scatters and dilutes output, work with the return path that distributes it, and find out whether the return serving your public zone also serves the back of house. Where it does, placement alone cannot hold an exclusion list, and the honest answer is to run very low or not at all.
The pick: where duct work is accessible, the SOSA Angaan at ₹25,999 is built for this; otherwise a wall-mounted SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 placed off the supply throw.
Next step: send the mechanical drawing along with the floor plan and we will suggest a position, or tell you the system will not allow one - ask for a clinic scenting plan.
How should HVAC airflow affect scent-machine placement in a pathology centre?
It should decide it, and it should decide it before you choose a machine rather than after one has been delivered. Ask your facilities engineer for the mechanical drawing and look for three things. First, the supply diffusers. A supply outlet is a jet, and anything released into its throw is flung across the room and diluted within seconds. You get a strong streak along the throw, very little elsewhere, and output pushed toward wherever the throw is aimed - often the corridor to the back of house. So keep the source out of the blast: away from the diffuser face, somewhere the air is moving gently, roughly a metre up on a wall rather than on a table at seated head height. Second, the returns. A return is the room's circulation path made visible, and it is the feature worth working with, because air travelling toward a return has already crossed the occupied part of the room. Place the source so its output joins that unhurried movement, but not immediately in front of the grille, where you are simply feeding the extract. In practice that means the opposite side of the room from the return, deep in the space, out of the entrance draught. Third, and this is the one that decides everything: does the return serving your public zone also serve the back of house? A shared return collects from every space it covers and redistributes the mixture through the same system. Where that is your arrangement, the exclusion list cannot be enforced by placement, no matter how carefully you position anything, because the ducting is the distribution system and it does not read your zone map. Your engineer can answer this from the drawing in about a minute. If the return is shared, the honest conclusions are these: run at a much lower level across the whole system, restrict the run window to hours when the back of house is not in use, or leave the building unscented. I would far rather say that now than have you buy a machine and discover it. Where duct work is accessible and the volumes are genuinely separate, HVAC mounting is the cleanest arrangement available, because distribution is designed in rather than improvised from a box in a corner - the SOSA Angaan at ₹25,999 exists for exactly that, and a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 can be wall or HVAC mounted too. Whatever the drawing says, the rooms on the fragrance-free list stay at zero: they are specified by your laboratory and your facilities engineer, and we make no assertion about them in either direction. Fragrance is an ambience decision like lighting, seating or signage, it works alongside your ventilation and cleaning rather than instead of them, SOSA products are not medical devices, and the clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan.
Read the mechanical drawing first. Stay out of the supply throw, work with the return path, and check whether that return also serves the back of house - because if it does, placement cannot hold your exclusions.
Where duct work is accessible the answer is the SOSA Angaan at ₹25,999; where it is not, a wall-mounted SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 placed off the supply throw does the same job less elegantly.
Two of these can be connected to duct work and one is quoted for a building rather than a room. Which one you need is answered by the drawing rather than by the floor area, and on a shared-return system the answer may well be that none of them is appropriate.
HVAC nebulising diffuser rated to 3,000m³, roughly 8,000-10,000 sq ft, at ₹25,999 with an 800ml reservoir, a metal body, programmable schedules and operation under 42dB. It also runs standalone wall-mounted where ducting is not reachable.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, roughly 2,000-3,000 sq ft, at ₹11,999. 165 × 80.5 × 215mm and 0.9kg, so it can be fixed where the air path suggests rather than where a socket happens to be convenient.
3,000m³ coverage (roughly 8,000-10,000 sq ft), ₹25,999, 800ml reservoir, metal body, programmable schedules, under 42dB, HVAC-connected or standalone wall-mounted. Distribution designed into the air path rather than improvised. CE, RoHS and SGS are electrical and compliance marks rather than medical approval.
Ten minutes with your facilities engineer and a printout answers all three. Nothing on this list requires you to understand air handling yourself.

One
Find the supply diffusers, then stay out of their throw
Mark every supply outlet serving the public zone and note which way each one is aimed. A supply outlet is a jet rather than a gentle wash, and anything introduced into that jet is thrown and diluted at once. The result is a strong line along the throw and almost nothing at the edges of the room, which owners read as a weak machine when it is really a badly placed one. Worse, if the throw is aimed toward the corridor - and on a lot of diagnostic plans it is, because that is where the designer wanted air to move - you have chosen the one position that pushes output toward the part of the building you were trying to keep clear. Away from the face, out of the throw, gently moving air, about a metre up.
Tip: Hold a tissue up under each diffuser for a second. Where it snaps sideways, do not put anything within a couple of metres.
A wall-mounted Vaayu can be fixed exactly where the drawing suggests instead of wherever a table and a socket happen to coincide.
Find the returns, and work with them at a distance
Returns are the useful feature. Air on its way to a return has already travelled through the occupied part of the room, so a source positioned to join that slow drift gets distributed properly rather than blasted. What you must not do is put the source in front of the grille, which simply feeds the extract and gives you an expensive way of scenting a filter. The workable position is usually across the room from the return, deep in the space, out of the entrance draught, at about a metre. Also note when the system runs: many commercial systems throttle back outside business hours, and a machine scheduled to run through the night on a system that is barely moving air behaves very differently from the same machine at ten in the morning.
Tip: Ask what hours the air handling actually runs at full rate. Match your run window to it and you will need less output for the same result.
Run windows on a Vaayu can be matched to the hours the system is genuinely moving air, which is a more precise lever than turning the intensity up.
Does the return serving reception also serve the back of house? That single question decides whether your exclusion list is enforceable by placement or not. A shared return draws from everywhere it covers, mixes, and delivers the mixture back out across the same system, so output released in the public zone reappears wherever that system serves. This is a common design and it is not a defect - but it means a solid wall is not a boundary for this purpose. If the answer is yes, be honest about your options: a much lower level across the whole system, a run window confined to hours when the back of house is not in use, or nothing at all. Sometimes the drawing says no, and then the answer is no. That is a legitimate outcome and it costs you nothing to discover it now.
Tip: Get the answer in an email from your engineer. It is the single most useful line of documentation in the whole exercise.
Where the public zone is genuinely on its own handling, an Angaan connected to that path is the cleanest arrangement available.
On a shared return, the air handling is your distribution system whether you chose it or not, and it will deliver to the rooms you crossed off the plan.
That is why the mechanical drawing is a purchasing document in this category, and why the honest answer sometimes arrives before the quotation does.
Distribution by design: 3,000m³ rated, HVAC-connected where duct work is accessible, so output travels the path the building already uses rather than fighting it.
Waterless, which simplifies mounting: no tank routine and no moisture added, so the unit can go where the air path wants it rather than near a sink and a socket.
The mechanical drawing is a purchasing document in this category. Sometimes it tells you where to put the machine, and sometimes it tells you not to buy one.

The SOSA specification against an air path
Selected from the mechanical drawing, not the floor area
Where the return is shared with the back of house, the honest specification may be a much lower level everywhere, a restricted run window, or nothing at all - and a reed at ₹749-₹849 in a small public zone sidesteps the question entirely. Fragrance is an ambience decision like lighting or signage, with no health, therapeutic or clinical claim of any kind, and no claim that it affects how a business performs. It works alongside your ventilation, cleaning and laboratory protocol, never instead of them, and SOSA products are not medical devices. Collection, bench, processing and scan rooms stay unscented, staff must be able to switch the source off in seconds, and the clinician's judgement overrides any plan. Ask for a clinic scenting plan and send the drawing with it.

A note from Sonal
I ask for the mechanical drawing on every diagnostic enquiry now, and I did not always. What changed my mind was a centre that had done everything else properly - a sensible zero list, a real corridor, doors that closed - and still could not keep the back of house clear, because the whole floor sat on one return. Nobody had asked. The drawing had been in a folder in the maintenance room the entire time, and it would have saved them a purchase.
I cannot read those drawings the way an engineer can, and I do not pretend to. What I need from them is small: where the supply blows, where the return draws, what hours the plant runs, and whether the public side and the back of house are on the same loop. Any facilities person can answer that in ten minutes, and the ten minutes is worth more than anything I could tell you about fragrance.
And when the answer is that the system will not allow the separation, the recommendation is to run very low or not at all. We make no health, therapeutic or clinical claim of any kind, and no claim that scenting affects how a centre performs commercially. Fragrance is an ambience decision, like lighting or seating. Clinical rooms stay unscented, and the clinician's judgement overrides any plan. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Where should a scent machine go relative to the air conditioning?
Out of the supply throw and across the room from the return, deep in the space and about a metre up on a wall. Air heading toward a return has already crossed the occupied part of the room, so joining that slow drift distributes output properly. A source in the supply jet gets thrown and diluted, and often pushed toward the corridor.
Can a scent machine be connected to the duct work?
Yes, where duct work is accessible. The Angaan at ₹25,999 is built for HVAC connection and the Vaayu at ₹11,999 can be wall or HVAC mounted. Connected distribution is tidier than a point source in a corner, but it only helps when the duct in question serves the public zone rather than the whole building.
What if my centre has one return for the whole floor?
Then placement alone cannot keep the excluded rooms clear, because the return mixes and redistributes air across everything it serves. The options are a much lower level throughout, a run window limited to hours when the back of house is not in use, or leaving the building unscented. All three are legitimate and the third is sometimes the right one.
Does running the machine overnight help distribution?
Usually not. Many commercial systems throttle back outside business hours, so output released overnight sits rather than travels, and you spend tank life for very little. Ask what hours the plant runs at full rate and match your run window to those hours instead - it is a cheaper lever than raising intensity.
Who should I ask for all this information?
Your facilities engineer or the contractor who maintains the system. You need four answers: where the supply outlets are aimed, where the returns are, what hours the plant runs, and whether the public zone and the back of house share a return. Get the last one in writing, because everything else depends on it.
Flagship scale, connected: the SOSA Meenar at ₹38,500 is quoted for roughly 12,000-18,000 sq ft of HVAC-connected space, and it is specified from the drawing like everything else.
