Oud at home is less about the product and more about the technique. I am Sonal, the perfumer behind SOSA, and the mistake I see most is people using too much, too long, in too small a room. Oud is warm, woody and resinous - it wants gentle heat and a light hand. Below is exactly how I use the Oud ceramic candle and the Woody Oud wax melt, where to place each, and the rituals that make oud feel luxurious rather than heavy.
Where should I place an oud candle or burner? A living room or a hallway, on a stable, heat-safe surface away from draughts and out of reach of children and pets. Oud carries, so a central spot lets it drift through the home gently.
Candle or wax melt to start with? If you want a glow and an evening ritual, start with the Oud ceramic candle. If you want flame-free and full dose control, start with the Woody Oud wax melt.
Warm it gently and use a light hand. With the Oud ceramic candle, trim the wick, light it for one to two hours in a medium-sized room - a living room or hallway - then snuff it; a short, warm burn opens the resin without overwhelming the space. With the Woody Oud wax melt, drop a small piece into the burner and add more only if you want it stronger, which makes dosing effortless and flame-free. Place either centrally on a heat-safe surface, away from draughts and out of reach of children and pets. The whole technique comes down to one rule: less is more.
Warm oud gently, keep it central and heat-safe, and stop before it feels heavy. A short candle burn or a small wax melt is plenty - less is more.
The candle ritual and the wax melt method
Both formats warm the oud, but they ask for slightly different habits. Here is how I use each so the scent stays rich and never tips into heavy.
Where to place oud at home
Oud carries further than most florals, so placement matters as much as dose. Get this right and one source scents a surprising amount of space.

Versailles
I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, and home fragrance is where I get to think room by room - a flame-free reed diffuser for the hall, a hand-poured candle for the evening, a wax melt when you want to change the mood without a match.
Our reed diffusers are alcohol-free and flame-free, our candles hand-poured from a natural soy blend, all built from real materials and IFRA-compliant. I would rather tell you which format suits which room than sell you the most expensive one.
Buy well, not by reflex. If another brand is honestly made, light it happily. I just wanted home scent with the precision of a trained nose and a label that tells you the truth.
Frequently asked questions
One to two hours in a medium room is plenty. Trim the wick first, let the wax pool, then snuff it. A short, warm burn opens the Oud candle without overwhelming the space.
Put a small piece of the Woody Oud melt in the ceramic burner and warm it. There is no flame, so add more only if you want it stronger and stop whenever you like.
A central living room or hallway on a stable, heat-safe surface, away from draughts, AC vents, children and pets. Oud carries well, so a central spot lets it drift gently through the home.
Usually too much, too long, in too small a room. Switch to a smaller wax melt piece or a shorter candle burn, move it to a larger or more central space, and ventilate. Less is more with oud.
Use the flame-free Woody Oud wax melt rather than an open flame, keep the burner out of reach, melt only a small amount and ventilate the room. SOSA oud is IFRA-compliant, but I make no medical claims.
