This arrives in my inbox almost weekly, usually with a sentence about having already tried the lowest setting and it not really helping. It did not help because it was never the right control. What you are describing is a line on a plan, and intensity is a volume knob.
Quick answers — read this first
Can I scent the reception without fragrancing the live kitchen? Usually yes, and it is a geometry problem rather than a fragrance one. Three things do almost all the work: distance along the air path, with the machine at the front and the kitchen downstream; a door on the kitchen area that somebody actually closes; and a timer, so the machine is off entirely while cooking is happening. None of those three is a setting. What will not work is the thing most people try first, which is turning the level down.

Why doesn't turning the intensity down solve it? Because the dial changes how much, and you are asking about where. Lower the level and you have a thinner fragrance everywhere in the same volume of air - a weaker reception and a kitchen that is still receiving it. Reach is set by the air path, by how the room moves and where it leaks, and the dial does not touch any of that. You end up with a front of house that no longer works and a boundary that never existed.

What if there is no door between them? Then be honest about what you have: one volume of air, and no way to scent half of it. The plan becomes the whole space scented on ordinary days and nothing at all on cooking days, which is a perfectly good plan. One SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 covers up to 1000m³; under about 750 sq ft it is one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899. A door, if you can hang one, beats both.
The short answer
Short answer: yes, usually - but by geometry rather than by fragrance. Put the machine at the front, upstream of the kitchen on the air path, hang a door on the kitchen area if you possibly can, and use the timer so the machine is off entirely while cooking happens. Turning the intensity down is the change everyone tries first and the one that does least, because a dial changes how much and you are asking about where.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) wall-mounted at the front of house or fitted into the air handling, on a trading-hours timer and switched off on cooking days, or one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) where reception and studio are a single small room.
Next step: send the floor plan showing the distance between the reception desk and the kitchen, and whether there is a door between them, and we will tell you honestly whether this is achievable in your building - Ask for a retail scenting plan.

Straight answer
How do I scent the reception of a kitchen showroom without fragrancing the live kitchen area?
It is achievable in most buildings, and the reason people struggle with it is that they are reaching for the wrong control. What you are asking for is a boundary - fragrance up to here and no further - and there is no setting on any machine that draws a line. Intensity changes how much fragrance is produced; it does not change where that fragrance goes. Turn the level down and what you get is a thinner version of the same distribution: a reception that no longer does what you bought it to do, and a kitchen that is still in the same volume of air receiving the same journey's worth of it. That is why lowering the setting is the change everyone tries first and the one that does least. The controls that actually work are physical, and there are three of them. Distance along the air path is the first. Find where conditioned air enters and leaves, checking with a tissue at the grilles, and put the machine at the front - reception, entrance, the supply side - with the kitchen downstream, ideally near its own extraction. Then the air travels front of house first, kitchen second, out. Wall mounting gets the source genuinely to the front rather than wherever a plinth was free, and with central AC, mounting into the air handling is better again. The second is a door, and it is worth more than everything else on this list combined. A door that closes makes the kitchen a separate volume of air, and separate volumes are the only real boundary that exists in a building. An open archway makes reception and kitchen one room with a narrow bit in the middle, and in one room there is no such thing as scenting half of it. Glass is fine; opacity is irrelevant. At fit-out stage it is the cheapest decision in this guide and the one you cannot easily retrofit. The third is the timer, which is a boundary in time when you cannot have one in space. The machine runs low through trading hours and comes off entirely before cooking starts, staying off until the extraction has cleared the room. Now the honest concession, because some buildings simply do not allow this: if the reception desk and the working kitchen share one open volume with nothing between them, you cannot scent one and not the other, and I would rather tell you that than sell you a machine and a disappointment. The plan there is the whole space on ordinary days and nothing at all on cooking days. And whichever version you are in, fragrance is never used to cover the cooking - what a kitchen leaves behind is an extraction, air-change and cleaning question, and the extraction specification belongs to your HVAC contractor. Hardware: one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 from about 1,500 sq ft, or one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 under 750. And plainly: no one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall, enquiries or order value. Ask for a retail scenting plan and tell us whether there is a door.
Distance, a door and a timer, in that order of usefulness. The intensity dial changes how much and never where, so lowering it weakens the reception without helping the kitchen. No door means one volume and one honest plan. One Vaayu ₹11,999, or a Sukoon ₹1,899 under 750 sq ft.
One SOSA Vaayu belongs at the front of the building - wall or HVAC mountable, rated to 1000m³, waterless, under 38dB, with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers and a key-lock so the level cannot drift upwards on a busy week. ₹11,999. Under about 750 sq ft, buy the Sukoon at ₹1,899 instead.

The machine, mounted at the front

The mounting matters more than the model here, because the whole plan depends on the source sitting genuinely upstream rather than somewhere convenient in the middle.

SOSA Vaayu
Showrooms from about 1,500 sq ft
SOSA Vaayu
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. Wall-mountable or fitted into the air handling, which is how the source ends up at the front of house rather than halfway down the floor. 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, app and buttons, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, under 38dB, 5W, auto-stop and key-lock.
From ₹11,999
SOSA Sukoon
A small studio under about 750 sq ft
SOSA Sukoon
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml fragrances. In a small studio where reception and kitchen are close together, this is the honest buy and the plan is simply to switch it off on cooking days. A Vaayu at this size would be the wrong purchase.
From ₹1,899
SOSA Vaayu
The front-of-house machine for a building with a working kitchen in it
SOSA Vaayu
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA.

The four levers, ranked

Ranked by how much each one actually changes, which is close to the reverse of the order most showrooms try them in.

1
Hang a door - the strongest lever
Two volumes of air are the only real boundary there is
Everything else on this page is a refinement; this is the thing that decides whether the question has an answer at all. A door that closes turns the kitchen into a separate volume, and separate volumes behave separately - your fragrance stops there, and in the other direction so does the cooking. An open archway means reception and kitchen are one room with a narrow bit in the middle, and in one room there is no such thing as scenting half of it. Glass doors are fine, because it is the closing that matters rather than the opacity, and a soft closer matters more than the material. If you are at fit-out stage, do this and stop reading.
Tip: A door that is always propped open is not a door, it is a wall with a hole in it.

One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

2
Buy distance along the air path
Front of house upstream, kitchen downstream, extraction last
Where a door is impossible, distance along the current is the next best thing - and it has to be distance along the air path rather than distance on the plan, which are not the same measurement. Hold a tissue at the ceiling grilles to see which are supplies and which are returns, then put the machine at the front, near where air enters, at about a metre off the floor and away from the return. Wall mounting or an HVAC mount is how you get the source genuinely to the front rather than wherever there is a spare surface. The air then crosses reception first and reaches the kitchen on its way out, which is the least bad version of one shared volume.
Tip: Twenty feet along the current is worth more than forty feet across the drawing.
SOSA Vaayu
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

3
Use the timer, then the dial last
A boundary in time is available even when one in space is not
The timer is the lever people underuse and the dial is the one they overuse. Run the machine low through trading hours and take it off entirely before cooking starts, leaving it off until the extraction has cleared the room. That gives you a clean separation on the axis you can actually control. The intensity setting comes last, and it is a comfort control rather than a boundary control - it decides whether the level suits people who are in the building for ninety minutes, which matters enormously, but it will not stop fragrance reaching a kitchen that shares the same air. Set it from the consultation seat at minute ninety and leave it alone.

One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

The SOSA principle
A dial controls how much, never where. You are asking for a line on a plan, and no machine ever built has a setting that draws one.
Which is why this is solved with a door, a distance and a timer - three things you can point at.
SOSA Vaayu
Mounted where the plan needs it: Wall or HVAC mounting puts the SOSA Vaayu genuinely at the front of the building rather than wherever a surface was free. ₹11,999.

The plan, front to back

One volume or two, this is the running order - and the first line of it is a question about your building rather than about fragrance.

The SOSA plan
What each lever actually changes
The lever What to do
A door on the kitchen area
Creates two separate volumes of air. The only genuine boundary available, and worth more than everything below it put together.
SOSA VaayuMachine position and mounting
Buys distance along the air path so the fragrance crosses reception before it reaches anything else. Wall or HVAC mount does this best.
SOSA VaayuThe timer and the off switch
A boundary in time rather than space. Off before cooking, off until the extraction has cleared the room, back on after.
The intensity dial
Changes how much, everywhere, at once. Useful for comfort over a ninety-minute consultation, useless as a boundary.
Extraction over the hob
The thing that actually deals with cooking - and a question for your HVAC contractor rather than for a fragrance company.

The physical placement question, including how to read your own air path with a tissue, is worked through in where a scent machine should go if the showroom also has a cooking-demo area. And if what you are really trying to do is keep the building consistent whether or not there is cooking that day, that is the pillar of this family: keeping a showroom consistent on demo days and non-demo days. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel.

SOSA Vaayu
Timers that make a boundary in time: 1h/4h/8h/24h scheduling runs ordinary days automatically and lets you take the machine off entirely on cooking days. ₹11,999.
A door, a distance, a timer - then the dial
SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 mounts on a wall or into the air handling, which is how the source reaches the front.
See the SOSA Vaayu Book a scenting plan
Everybody reaches for the intensity first, because it is the only control on the box. It is also the only control that does nothing whatsoever about the thing they are actually asking for.

The SOSA kitchen-showroom specification

Two machines cover almost every showroom of this shape, with the Aangan taking over where an experience centre is large enough that the scenting belongs in the air handling. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately, so the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and continuity of supply should be confirmed with SOSA before you commit to a rollout. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Solve this with a door, a distance and a timer, and treat the dial as a comfort control rather than a boundary. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like lighting or display styling; it is never used to cover another smell - not cooking, not laminate, not adhesive - and extraction, air change and hood specification belong to your HVAC contractor rather than to a fragrance company. And plainly: no one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall, enquiries or order value, and a supplier quoting a figure is selling. Ask for a retail scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal

The version of this question I get most often already contains the failed experiment: we tried it on the lowest setting and it still gets into the kitchen. I understand why that is the first thing anyone tries. It is the only control on the machine, it takes two seconds, and it feels like it ought to be the answer. But it is a volume knob, and what you have described is a wall. Lowering it gives you a reception that has stopped doing its job and a kitchen that is exactly as involved as it was before, because the fragrance is still travelling the same route through the same air.

So we stop adjusting and start looking at the building. Is there a door? If there is, close it, and most of the problem disappears, because two volumes of air behave as two rooms. If there is not, buy distance instead - machine at the front, near where the air comes in, wall-mounted or into the air handling, with the kitchen downstream near its own extraction. Then use the timer for the rest: off before cooking, off until the air has cleared, on again afterwards. And if reception and kitchen genuinely share one open volume, I will say the honest thing - you cannot have one scented and the other not, and the plan is the whole space on ordinary days and nothing at all on cooking days. One more thing about what runs at that front desk: nothing edible. SOSA's own Fresh Brew at ₹849 is coffee and vanilla, and a reception smelling of breakfast in a building with a working kitchen behind it is confusing before anybody has said hello.

One Vaayu at ₹11,999 from about 1,500 sq ft, or a Sukoon at ₹1,899 under 750, and nothing at all in the kitchen area itself. Installation, warranty, AMC and bulk pricing are not published and should be confirmed with SOSA. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How do I scent the reception without fragrancing the live kitchen area?
By geometry rather than by fragrance. Put the machine at the front, upstream on the air path, ideally wall-mounted or fitted into the air handling, with the kitchen downstream near its own extraction. Hang a door on the kitchen area if you possibly can, because a closed door makes it a separate volume of air and that is the only genuine boundary available. Then use the timer so the machine is off entirely while cooking is happening.
Why does turning the intensity down not fix this?
Because the dial changes how much fragrance is produced, not where it goes. A lower setting gives you a thinner version of the same distribution - a reception that no longer works and a kitchen still sharing the same air. Reach is decided by the air path, by how the room moves and where it leaks, and no setting touches that. Use intensity to get the level right for people who spend ninety minutes in the building, and use geometry for the boundary.
What if there is no door between reception and the kitchen?
Then you have one volume of air and no way to scent half of it, and I would rather say that plainly than sell you a machine and a disappointment. The honest plan becomes the whole space scented on ordinary days and nothing at all on cooking days, handled by the timer and the off switch. If you are still at fit-out stage, hanging a door on that opening will do more for you than any other decision in this guide.
Does a glass door work as well as a solid one?
Yes. It is the closing that matters rather than the opacity, because what you are creating is a separate volume of air rather than a visual barrier. What matters far more than the material is whether the door is actually shut - a door propped open all day is a wall with a hole in it. A soft closer, or simply a habit written into the opening routine, is worth more than the specification of the door itself.
Will a scented reception win us more kitchen enquiries, or is that not something anyone can promise?
No one can promise that and I will not. SOSA has run no research that would support a figure, and there is no honest way to separate ambient scent from the twenty other things a visitor experiences. The question worth asking is whether the air at your front desk agrees with the displays, the lighting and the price of the kitchens, and whether the working kitchen behind it has been left alone to smell of what it is actually doing.

Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room.
