Selecting a finish is one of the few genuinely tactile jobs left in retail: people hold a sample up to the light, turn it, put it next to another one and change their mind. Almost everything that makes that feel premium happens through the eyes and the fingers, and the air's contribution is to be unobtrusive enough not to interfere.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I create a premium atmosphere around material and finish selection? By fixing the things the task actually uses. Light quality first - colour rendering, a consistent temperature, and enough of it at the table rather than only over the displays. Then the condition of the samples: clean, unscuffed, in order, and enough of them to compare. Then the surface: clear, not a working desk with three files on it. Fragrance comes after all of those, and its whole job is to stay out of the way.

Where does fragrance actually sit in the order? Last, and I mean that as a compliment to it rather than a dismissal. Scent is the last five per cent - it can make a well-built room feel finished, and it cannot make an ordinary one feel premium. If the light over the sample tray is poor, or the samples are chipped, no fragrance rescues that. Spend the money in order: light, samples, surfaces, seating, then air. Air is also the cheapest of the five, which is a useful clue about its rank.

What does the fragrance part cost? One machine, for the whole showroom rather than the selection area specifically. Past about 1,500 sq ft that is one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, run low on trading-hours timers. Under about 750 sq ft, one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 and a Vaayu would be the wrong buy. Nothing extra for the selection table itself.
The short answer
Short answer: with light quality, clean and well-ordered samples, a clear surface and an unhurried designer - in that order. Selection is a visual and tactile task, so fragrance is the last five per cent and its job is to stay out of the way: dry, material-led, nothing edible, run low. One Vaayu at ₹11,999, or a Sukoon at ₹1,899 under 750 sq ft.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for the whole floor at a low setting, bought after the lighting over the sample area is right, or one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) in a single-room showroom under about 750 sq ft.
Next step: tell us what the lighting over your sample area is and how long a selection session runs, and we will tell you honestly whether fragrance is the next thing to spend on - Ask for a retail scenting plan.

This is the one question in the family where I spend most of the answer on things SOSA does not sell, because the ranking is the useful part and fragrance genuinely comes last in it.

Straight answer
How do I create a premium atmosphere around kitchen material and finish selection?
Start by noticing what the task is, because the answer follows from it. Choosing a shutter finish, a worktop or a handle is a visual and tactile job: a customer holds a sample, tilts it towards the light, puts it against another one, runs a thumb across the texture, then changes their mind twice. Everything that makes that feel considered is something the eyes or the hands encounter, and the honest ranking goes like this. First, light. Not brightness - quality. A finish selection area needs light with decent colour rendering, a consistent temperature across the whole table, and enough of it at the sample rather than only over the display kitchens. If your samples are chosen under warm downlights and installed in a kitchen lit by daylight, the customer will be surprised at handover, and no amount of atmosphere elsewhere makes up for that. This is the single largest improvement most showrooms can make, and it is a lighting job rather than a fragrance one. Second, the samples themselves. Clean, unchipped, unscuffed, in a rational order, with enough of each finish to see a real area rather than a postage stamp. A tired sample library is the clearest possible signal about how a brand treats detail, and customers read it instantly. Third, the surface and the seating. A clear table rather than a working desk with three quotations and somebody's tea on it. Chairs that a family can sit in for two hours. Somewhere to put a handbag. Fourth, the designer's time - not being interrupted, not answering the phone, not doing three consultations at once. And fifth, the air, which is where SOSA comes in and where it belongs: last. Ambient scent is the last five per cent of a room. It can make a well-built selection area feel finished and coherent; it cannot make a badly lit one feel premium, and it is not a differentiator. What the air should actually do during selection is stay out of the way. The register is the showroom's: dry, clean and material-led - dry woods such as cedar, pine and sage where the joinery and samples are warm, a dry green, dry tea or clean mineral where the room is white and minimal - and nothing edible at all. No vanilla, no baking, no coffee, no caramel, no warm spice. Our own Fresh Brew, coffee and vanilla at ₹849, is exactly the register to avoid, and it is a particularly poor idea here because it turns a room about materials into a room about food. The level is low - lower than a shop floor, because selection sessions run sixty to ninety minutes and often longer, and exposure accumulates across that time. The test remains the ninety-minute sit at the table, followed by asking the designers who work there all week, privately and after an ordinary week. There is one specific thing to avoid, and it is popular: do not add a separate source at the selection table to make it feel special. A table on an open floor shares the floor's air, so a second profile mixes rather than staying put, and a source close to somebody seated for two hours puts the strongest air in the building where the longest visit is. The selection area should be at the quiet end of the gradient a single machine produces. Two honest facts about the machine, kept carefully separate from claims I will not make. The SOSA Vaayu is waterless, so it adds no moisture to the room and leaves no residue on surfaces - that is a fact about the machine, not a claim about what any fragrance does to your veneers, laminates or stone, which is a question for the manufacturers who made them. And it is under 38dB, so nothing hums over a quiet conversation about grain direction. Hardware: past about 1,500 sq ft, one Vaayu at ₹11,999, on 1h/4h/8h/24h timers with a key-lock. Under about 750 sq ft, one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899, and a Vaayu would be the wrong buy. Three standing limits: fragrance is never a mask for laminate, adhesive or new joinery, which need ventilation and curing weeks; anybody on the floor must be able to switch it off in seconds; and plainly, no one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall, enquiries, order value or a customer's decision about a finish, and a supplier offering a figure is selling. Ask for a retail scenting plan and tell us what the lighting is like.
Light, samples, surface, seating, then air - in that order. Selection is a job for the eyes and hands, so the fragrance's task is to stay out of the way: dry, non-edible, low. One machine for the whole floor, and nothing extra at the table.
Once the light and the samples are right, the air is one SOSA Vaayu - waterless, so it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces, under 38dB, rated to 1000m³ so it runs low. ₹11,999. Under about 750 sq ft the honest buy is the Sukoon at ₹1,899, and it is still the last thing on the list.

The machine, once the rest is right

Two honest answers by showroom size, and both of them are the fifth item on a list of five. The images link to the product pages so you can read the specification first.

SOSA Vaayu
A display floor past about 1,500 sq ft
SOSA Vaayu
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, roughly 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, auto-stop and key-lock. Waterless means it adds no moisture to the room and leaves no residue on surfaces - a fact about the machine rather than a claim about your finishes.
From ₹11,999
SOSA Sukoon
Under about 750 sq ft - buy this instead
SOSA Sukoon
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml fragrances. Where the showroom is a single room with a selection table in it, this is the honest buy at a sixth of the price, placed away from the table and run at the bottom of its range.
From ₹1,899
SOSA Vaayu
The machine that stays in the background during selection
SOSA Vaayu
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA.

The three things that build the atmosphere

Two of these are not fragrance and cost more than fragrance does. That ordering is the point of the post rather than an aside in it.

1
Fix the light before anything else
A finish chosen under the wrong light is a problem no atmosphere solves
Selection is a colour judgement made by eye, so light quality is not decoration here - it is the instrument. Aim for good colour rendering, one consistent temperature across the whole table rather than a mix of warm downlights and cool strips, and enough light at the sample rather than only over the display kitchens. Where you can, give customers a way to see a finish in something closer to daylight, because that is where the kitchen will live. This is the largest single improvement most selection areas can make, it costs more than a scenting plan, and it should be done first. Fragrance over a badly lit sample table is a coat of paint on a wobbly cabinet.
Tip: Compare two samples under your table light and by the window. If they disagree, start there.

2
Treat the sample library as merchandise
A chipped, dusty sample tray tells a customer more than any brochure does
Customers read your sample library as evidence about how the brand treats detail, and they read it in about four seconds. Keep the pieces clean and unscuffed, replace anything chipped, keep the order rational so a comparison does not require rummaging, and use pieces large enough to show a real area of a finish rather than a chip. Give the table a clear working surface rather than a desk with files and somebody's cup on it. None of this is glamorous, and all of it does more for the feeling of a selection session than the air ever will. A clean, well-ordered library at a well-lit table already reads as premium before anybody has thought about fragrance.
Tip: Set a monthly date to pull and replace damaged samples. It never happens otherwise.

3
Then let the air be quiet
The last five per cent works by being unnoticeable
Once light, samples, surface and seating are right, the air's job is small and specific: make the room read as looked-after without asking for any attention. That means the showroom's own register - dry, material-led, nothing edible - at a low setting, from one source placed upstream and away from the selection table. No separate fragrance at the table, because a table on an open floor shares the floor's air and a second profile mixes in the aisle. And the honest limit stated plainly: scent cannot make an ordinary selection area feel premium. It can make a good one feel finished, which is worth having, and it is not worth confusing with the other four items.
Tip: If a customer can name the fragrance while holding a sample, it is too strong.
SOSA Vaayu
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

The SOSA principle
Material selection is the one moment in a showroom visit where the customer is using senses fragrance cannot help with, which is exactly why the air's only useful contribution is to be unnoticeable.
A room that lets somebody concentrate on a piece of veneer for two hours has done its job, and nobody will ever compliment it for that.
SOSA Vaayu
Waterless, by design: SOSA Vaayu adds no moisture to the room and leaves no residue on surfaces - a fact about the machine, not a claim about your finishes. ₹11,999.

The order of spending

The whole answer as a ranking. If your budget stops halfway down the list, stop there rather than skipping to the bottom.

The SOSA plan
Building a premium selection area, in order
The order What to do
1. Light over the table
Good colour rendering, one consistent temperature, enough of it at the sample. The single biggest improvement, and it is not a fragrance job.
2. The sample library
Clean, unchipped, in order, and large enough pieces to judge a real area. Customers read it as evidence about the brand.
3. Surface and seating
A clear table rather than a working desk, and chairs a family can use for two hours without shifting about.
4. The designer's attention
Uninterrupted time. No phone, no second consultation running in parallel, no queue forming behind the chair.
SOSA Vaayu5. The air, last
One source for the whole floor, the showroom's register, low setting. A Vaayu at ₹11,999, or a Sukoon at ₹1,899 under 750 sq ft.

The reason the selection table gets no source of its own is in whether the designer's consultation table should be scented differently from the display floor, and the level it all runs at is worked out in how strong fragrance should be when customers spend sixty to ninety minutes choosing a kitchen. The full method sits in how to scent a kitchen studio without distracting customers during design consultations. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel.

SOSA Vaayu
Quiet during a long selection: Under 38dB, so nothing hums over a conversation about grain direction. ₹11,999.
The last five per cent, done properly
SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 covers up to 1000m³ and is waterless, so it adds no moisture to a room full of finishes and samples.
See the SOSA Vaayu Book a scenting plan
If your sample tray is chipped and the light over it is orange, a fragrance will not rescue the moment. It will just be the nicest-smelling part of a bad five minutes.

The SOSA showroom specification

Two machines cover almost every showroom with a selection area, and both of them are the last item on the list rather than the first. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately, so the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and continuity of supply should be confirmed with SOSA before a rollout. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Spend in order - light, samples, surface, seating, then air - and treat the air as the finish rather than the foundation. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like the lighting over your sample tray; it is never a mask for laminate, adhesive or new joinery, which need ventilation and curing time instead; and no one can promise you that scent moves a business number, so a supplier quoting you one is selling rather than advising. A note from Sonal

This is the question where I give away the most and sell the least, and I think that is the right shape for it. People write to me wanting the finish-selection moment to feel like the best part of their showroom, and then are slightly deflated when the first three things I talk about are lighting, sample condition and chairs. But that is genuinely the order. A customer choosing a veneer is using their eyes and their fingers, and those two senses are not something a fragrance can assist.

Where the air does help is at the very end, and it helps by being quiet. A room that lets somebody concentrate on a piece of timber for two hours without anything competing for their attention is a well-made room, and a low, dry, unremarkable fragrance is part of how it gets there. That is the last five per cent, honestly described. It cannot make an ordinary selection area premium, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you the wrong thing at the wrong point in the list.

On hardware: one Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a floor past about 1,500 sq ft, or a Sukoon at ₹1,899 under 750, and nothing extra for the selection table. The Vaayu is waterless, which means it adds no moisture to the room - that is a fact about the machine and not a claim about your veneers, which is a question for whoever made them. Fragrance is never a substitute for ventilation, and nobody can promise you a commercial result. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How do I create a premium atmosphere around kitchen material and finish selection?
In this order: light quality over the table, the condition and order of the sample library, a clear surface and comfortable seating, the designer's uninterrupted attention, and only then the air. Selection is a visual and tactile task, so the things the eyes and hands meet do almost all the work. Fragrance is the last five per cent and its job is to stay out of the way.
Does fragrance help a customer choose a finish?
No one can promise anything of the kind, and I will not. SOSA has run no research that would support a figure, and there is no honest way to separate ambient scent from the lighting, the samples, the pricing and the designer's manner. What fragrance can do is make a well-built selection area feel coherent and finished. It cannot make an ordinary one feel premium.
Should the selection table have its own fragrance?
No. A table on an open display floor shares the floor's air, so a second profile mixes in the aisle rather than staying where you put it, and a source close to somebody seated for two hours puts the strongest air in the building at the longest visit. One source for the whole floor, placed upstream, with the selection area at the quiet end of the gradient.
Does a scent machine affect laminates, veneers or stone samples?
That is a question for the manufacturers who made them, and SOSA makes no claim about it in either direction. What can honestly be said is a fact about the machine: the Vaayu is waterless, so it adds no moisture to the room and leaves no residue on surfaces. Whether room humidity matters to a particular finish is something the finish supplier should answer.
What machine and what does it cost?
One machine for the whole showroom rather than for the selection area specifically. Past about 1,500 sq ft, a SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999, rated to 1000m3, waterless, under 38dB and key-locked. Under about 750 sq ft, a SOSA Sukoon at Rs 1,899 and a Vaayu would be the wrong buy. Both come after the lighting budget, not before it.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.

Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference.
