I am going to decline the calculation, and I would rather say so in the first paragraph than lead you through three hundred words that end there anyway. Any figure I gave you would rest on an assumption about what a room does to a visitor, and that is precisely the thing I am not willing to assert.
Quick answers — read this first
How do you calculate the return on an office scenting spend? You do not, and I would not trust anyone who hands you a figure. To produce one, somebody has to assume that the room changes what a visitor does — signs, orders, renews, stays — and there is no honest basis for that assumption. We make no such claim about any SOSA product. What is left is a simpler and more defensible question: is the standard of the room worth the price of the thing, judged the way you judge a floor, a light fitting or the state of the washroom. That question you can answer yourself in a minute.
Then how should I justify it to my board or my family? The same way you justify the reception furniture. Nobody asks what the visitor chairs returned last year. They were bought because a room that visitors sit in should hold a certain standard, and because the price was visible and small against the rest of the office. Put this in the same line of the budget. If it cannot be justified on that basis, it should not be bought — and in several offices I have looked at, the honest conclusion was that this year the money belonged in the washroom or the lighting instead.
Does a long relationship change the maths? It changes what you are looking at, not the arithmetic, because there is no arithmetic. A business with few visitors and long relationships should think about the standard of the room where those relationships are conducted — but that is an argument for a considered, quiet, small setup, not for a larger one. The temptation is to reason that because each relationship is worth a great deal, more should be spent on the room. That converts a relationship's value into a justification for hardware, and it is exactly the move I am refusing.
The short answer
Short answer: You do not calculate it. Any figure requires assuming the room changes what a visitor does, and we make no such claim. Judge it instead as an interior decision about the standard of your own premises, alongside flooring, lighting and the washroom — with a visible price and no payback period attached. Most offices need one reed.
The pick: If the room is already in order, SOSA Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is usually the whole purchase. If it is not, spend the money on clearing, relighting or the washroom this year instead.
Next step: Tell us the room sizes and we will specify the smallest thing that is honest, with no figure attached to it. Ask for a Raipur scenting plan.
How should I evaluate an office scenting spend when each relationship runs for years?
Not with a calculation, and I want to be direct about why rather than hide the refusal in qualifications. Every formula for this that I have seen contains the same hidden step. Somebody assumes that the room alters what a visitor does — that a dealer renews, or a vendor agrees, or a relationship lasts, partly because of the air in the meeting room — and then multiplies that assumption by a large number, because in your business the numbers attached to a single relationship are large. The multiplication is arithmetic and looks respectable. The assumption underneath it is not something I am willing to assert, and I make no claim of that kind about any product I sell. Remove the assumption and the formula has nothing in it. So here is the frame I would actually use. You already make decisions like this every year without any figure at all. Nobody asks what the visitor chairs returned. Nobody computes a payback period for warming the light in reception, or for re-doing the washroom, or for taking the notices off the wall. Those are decisions about the standard of your own premises, taken because you have a view about what your building should be like, and priced against everything else on the list. A fragrance belongs in exactly that line of the budget, and it happens to be one of the cheapest items in it. Which makes the real question easy to ask and easy to answer. Is the room where you conduct a fifteen-year relationship in the state you want it to be in? If it is not, the first fixes are free or nearly free — clearing, light, seating, sound, the door to the godown — and they outrank this. If it is, then one reed at ₹849 in reception is usually the whole of it, and a machine enters the conversation only from roughly 1,500 sq ft of connected volume, where what you are buying is control and uptime rather than an effect. And the long-relationship point cuts the other way. Few visitors and long relationships argue for a smaller, quieter, more considered setup, not a larger one. If you want the smallest honest specification for your rooms, ask us for a Raipur scenting plan.
No payback period and no return figure, because producing either would mean claiming the room changes what a visitor does, and we make no such claim.
Where an office genuinely runs to roughly 1,500 sq ft and more of connected volume, the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 is bought for control, distribution and uptime — run windows, a key-lock, a 400ml tank lasting roughly 75 to 90 days, about 1.5 units of electricity a month on a ten-hour schedule.
What I can price honestly is the hardware and the electricity, and neither is large. A reed at ₹849 is passive and has no running cost at all. A Vaayu at ₹11,999 draws 5W and runs to roughly 1.5 units of electricity a month on a ten-hour daily schedule. What I will not price is an effect, because I would have to invent it.
Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. Passive and silent, no power, no running cost, nothing to maintain. In most B2B offices this is the complete specification. 50ml ₹849, 130ml ₹1,349.
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank lasting roughly 75-90 days depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India.
Three parts to the refusal, and the alternative frame at the end of them.
1
First, why the formula fails
Every version of it hides an assumption I will not make
The structure is always the same. Take the value of a relationship, apply some fraction to the room, and present the result as a return. The arithmetic is fine. The fraction is invented, and inventing it means asserting that the air in a meeting room moves a commercial decision. I do not believe anyone can support that, I make no claim of the kind about anything SOSA sells, and I would rather lose an order than supply a number that only looks like evidence. If a supplier hands you a payback period for a diffuser, ask them where the fraction came from. The answer will be that somebody chose it.
Tip: A number that cannot survive the question where did that fraction come from is not a calculation. It is a sales aid.
2
Second, the frame that does work
Put it in the same budget line as flooring, lighting and the washroom
You take decisions of this kind every year without a figure and nobody objects. The reception chairs were bought because visitors sit in them and they should not be shabby. The light was warmed because flat white made the room look like a back office. The washroom was redone because it is the one room a visitor uses alone. None of those had a return attached and none of them needed one. They were judgements about the standard of your own premises with visible prices, weighed against each other. A fragrance sits in exactly that list, near the bottom of it by cost and by importance, and it should be argued for on exactly those terms or not at all.
3
Third, what long relationships actually imply
Few visitors is an argument for a smaller setup, not a bigger one
The reasoning I want to head off is the one that runs: each relationship is worth a great deal, therefore a larger spend on the room is justified. That converts relationship value into hardware, which is the same forbidden move in a different coat. The true implication runs the other way. A business with few visitors who stay for hours, and staff who breathe the room for nine, should set its level low and buy small. A showroom with hundreds of people passing can carry a higher level because nobody stays; you cannot. So the honest conclusion of a long-relationship business is usually one reed, set quietly, in a room that has first been put in order.
The machine is bought for control, distribution and uptime — things that can be specified and checked.
If a supplier gives you a payback period for a diffuser, ask where the fraction came from. Somebody chose it.
We publish prices, coverage, electricity and tank life, because those can be verified. We publish no figure that depends on what a room does to a person.
The commonest honest answer: Mountain Breeze — Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. Passive, silent, no running cost, and in most offices the entire specification. From ₹849.
The two columns I would actually put in front of a board: what can be stated, and what cannot.
The SOSA plan
What can be claimed, and what cannot
We will state this
We will not state this
Price, coverage by volume, electricity and tank life
A payback period, because producing one means inventing the fraction underneath it.
That a room holds one register instead of smelling of a corridor or an aerosol
That the room changes what a dealer, a vendor or a buyer decides — we make no claim of that kind.
That control, distribution and uptime are real reasons to choose a machine
That a machine is justified by the value of the relationships conducted in the room.
That most B2B offices need one reed, and some need nothing this year
That spending more improves anything. Few visitors argues for a smaller setup.
The even-handed version of whether any of this belongs in a B2B company is in scent branding without retail customers, and the practical specification question is answered in does professional scenting make sense for a B2B office. SOSA is an independent Indian brand; the hotel-inspired scents are our own original interpretations, and no company named anywhere on this site is a SOSA customer or partner.
What a machine actually buys: Vaayu — control, distribution across a deep floor plate, and uptime. 5W, under 38dB, a 400ml tank lasting roughly 75 to 90 days. ₹11,999.
Nobody asked what the reception chairs returned last year. They were bought because a room visitors sit in should hold a standard. Put this in that line.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA
What we publish
Prices, coverage, electricity and tank life — all of which can be checked
A short ladder, priced plainly, with no figure attached to any of it beyond what it costs and what it covers. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One reed. Passive, no power, no running cost, nothing to maintain. The complete answer in most B2B offices, whatever the size of the business behind them.
Bought for control, distribution and uptime: run windows, key-lock, 5W, roughly 1.5 units of electricity a month on a ten-hour schedule, 400ml lasting roughly 75 to 90 days. ₹11,999.
And the option that belongs on every version of this list: nothing, this year. If the reception needs clearing, the light needs warming or the godown door needs a closer, those come first and they cost less. Also stated plainly: there is no SOSA refill product for the Vaayu at present, so plan the fill as part of the purchase rather than assuming a cartridge is on the site, and we never compute oil consumption or running cost for it. We do not scent godowns, warehouses or loading areas. Coverage is volumetric, and a second unit belongs to a second volume of air, never a second corner.

A note from Sonal
I am asked for this number several times a year, usually by an owner who has been asked for it by somebody else, and I always decline. It would be easy to produce. Take the value of a dealer relationship, apply a fraction to the room, present the result. The arithmetic would look respectable and the fraction would be something I made up. I would rather lose the order than put a figure into somebody's board paper that I could not defend if anyone asked where it came from.
What I offer instead is the frame you already use for everything else in the building. Nobody asked what the reception chairs returned, or what warming the light returned, or what the washroom refit returned. Those were judgements about the standard of your own premises, taken with the prices in front of you. A fragrance belongs in that list, near the bottom by cost, and if it cannot be justified there it should not be bought at all.
The last thing I would say is that few visitors and long relationships point towards a smaller setup rather than a larger one, which is the opposite of what people expect me to argue. This is an ambience decision and not a claim that it changes what a dealer, a vendor or a buyer does, and nothing therapeutic or medical is implied. It never masks a smell that has a source, and your own judgement about your premises outranks mine. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
How do we calculate the return on an office scenting spend?
You do not, and we will not supply a figure. Any number requires assuming that the room changes what a visitor does, and we make no such claim about any product we sell. Remove that assumption and the formula is empty. Judge it instead as an interior decision about the standard of your own premises, priced against flooring, lighting and the washroom.
How should I justify it internally, then?
The same way the reception chairs were justified. Nobody asked what they returned last year; they were bought because a room visitors sit in should hold a standard, and the price was visible and small against everything else. Put this in that budget line. If it cannot be defended on those terms, do not buy it - and sometimes the honest conclusion is that this year the money belongs in the washroom.
Our relationships are worth a great deal each. Does that justify spending more?
No, and that is the reasoning I would most like to head off. Converting the value of a relationship into a justification for hardware is the same forbidden step in a different form. Few visitors who stay for hours, and staff who breathe the room all day, argue for a smaller and quieter setup. In most such offices the honest answer is one reed.
What figures will you publish?
Price, coverage by volume, electricity and tank life, because those can be checked. A Vaayu draws 5W and runs to roughly 1.5 units of electricity a month on a ten-hour daily schedule, and a 400ml tank lasts roughly 75 to 90 days. We never compute oil consumption or running cost, and we publish no payback period for anything.
So what should we actually buy?
In most B2B offices, one reed at Rs 849 in a reception under about 300 sq ft, and nothing else. Two rooms, the duo at Rs 1,548. From roughly 1,500 sq ft of connected volume, a Vaayu at Rs 11,999, bought for control, distribution and uptime rather than for an effect. And if the room needs clearing or relighting first, buy nothing this year.
Two rooms: The Fresh and Grounded duo, one register per room, because a single bottle never works across a doorway. ₹1,548 for two 50ml.
