Find and remove the source first
Walk the house with your nose, not your air freshener. A bad smell almost always has a physical home, and the usual suspects are short: the kitchen bin and the drain under the sink; damp patches, mildew on a bathroom ceiling or behind a cupboard; a shoe rack by the door; pet bedding and litter; and rooms that are kept shut so the air goes stale. Empty and wash the bin, run hot water and a little baking soda down slow drains, dry out damp and treat mildew, air or wash shoes and pet bedding. This is the unglamorous part, and it is the part that actually works. No fragrance, mine included, can out-compete a source that is still sitting there releasing odour.
A quick test: if a smell comes back within an hour of spraying, you have masked a source rather than removed one. Go back and find it. If a smell is musty and gets stronger in the rains, think damp. If it is sharp and worst near the kitchen or bathroom, think bin or drain. Tracking the smell to its origin is the single highest-value thing you can do, and it costs nothing.
Ventilate, clean, then scent
With the source gone, open the windows. Even ten minutes of cross-ventilation moves out the stale, settled air that holds odour - this matters more in closed Indian flats during monsoon and winter when we keep everything shut. Wipe down the surfaces that quietly absorb smell: soft furnishings, curtains, the inside of the fridge, kitchen tiles. Now the room is a clean canvas.
