Why does a clean car change the choice? Because there is no background odour for the fragrance to compete with, so it is heard clearly and a lower dose is enough.
Which register suits them best? Lemon at Rs 499, which reads as a car that has just been wiped down, or Icy Mint at Rs 489, the coolest in the range.
A clean car is the only one where fragrance is heard clearly
Most people never experience a car fragrance properly, and the reason has nothing to do with the product. An ordinary car has a background: upholstery that has absorbed years of use, the residue of food eaten in traffic, damp from mats that got wet in a monsoon and dried slowly, shoes, a bag that lives in the boot, and at least one small spill nobody ever located. A fragrance added to that is not perceived on its own; it is perceived layered over everything else, and what the owner smells is a mixture. That is why so many people describe car perfumes as sickly - what they are actually describing is a sweet composition sitting on top of a background it cannot cover. A spotless car has no background. The upholstery is cleaned, the mats come out, spills are found and dealt with, and nothing has been left under a seat. In that condition a fragrance is heard exactly as it is, in the proportions it was composed in. Two things follow. The first is that the register matters far more than it does elsewhere: a well made composition will be noticed and appreciated, which makes this recipient one of the few who will actually register the difference between a proper product and a petrol-pump card. The second, and more practical, is that less is needed. One unit is ample in any ordinary car and comfortably ample in a clean one. This owner will never need two, and two would be a mistake - a cabin holds only a few cubic metres of sealed air and reaches temperatures nothing in a house comes close to, so over-dosing shows up faster here than anywhere. On which register, there is a natural match. Lemon at four hundred and ninety-nine rupees reads as the smell of a car that has just been wiped down, which is precisely the state this person maintains. It extends what they are already doing rather than layering a different idea on top of it, and that is why it lands better with them than with anybody else. Icy Mint at four hundred and eighty-nine rupees is the coolest thing in the range and reads as cold air rather than scent - also a good fit, and the safest choice if you know nothing else about them. Sea Breeze at five hundred and nine reads as an aired-out cabin. If the car is kept in a basement or covered parking - common for somebody who does not want dust on it - then Sandalwood at four hundred and seventy-nine and Oud at five hundred and nine become available and are the two richest things in the range, while Vetiver at five hundred and nine is dry, green and grown-up and works almost anywhere. Heat is the constraint that decides among them: a cabin in direct sun pushes sweet and heavy material forward and burns light material off first, so warm registers belong out of the sun. There is a second consideration for this recipient that is about the object rather than the scent. They clean the interior often, which means anything in it has to be worked around: lifted, wiped under, removed before a proper clean and replaced afterwards. A hanging car perfume is good on this count because it touches no surface, uses no adhesive and comes off in a second. The Mysore Orange Blossom car perfume spray at five hundred and forty-nine rupees is even better, because nothing is in the cabin at all between uses - it lives in a door pocket or the glovebox and appears only when wanted. For somebody who keeps an immaculate interior, that is often the most considerate object in the range. Placement matters for the same reason and for performance. Never in front of an air conditioning vent, where a gentle continuous release becomes a blast every time the fan runs and the product empties in a fraction of the time it should. Never in the driver's line of sight. A door pocket or a rear grab handle is steadier, lasts far longer, and keeps the object away from the surfaces they wipe most often. And do not install it yourself: somebody this particular has a view about where things go. One thing to say and one thing not to say. Do say that it is a finishing touch on a car that is already clean - because that is exactly what it is, and it acknowledges the work they have already done. Do not say that it will make the car smell clean, because they have that covered and the remark lands as a comment on their car. That boundary is the standing rule of this cluster in any case: fragrance is a finishing touch, never a fix. Timing follows the same rule as everywhere: do not give car fragrance in the first weeks to cover the new-car smell, because owners like it and it fades on its own as the interior settles. Month two or three is honest. A refill at three hundred and ninety-nine to four hundred and forty-nine rupees makes a good second gift, and unusually for this cluster, this is the one owner who will actually replace it on schedule rather than run it months past its useful life.

| Gift | What it suits | Why it works for a new car | From |

| Icy Mint hanging car perfume | Safest in Indian heat | Cool and dry, which is the register that holds up after an afternoon in the sun - the one to choose when you are guessing | ₹489 |
| Vetiver hanging car perfume | Somebody who dislikes sweet | Earthy and dry, the most grown-up of the eight, and the least likely to tire over a long daily commute | ₹509 |
| Car discovery set (pack of 3) | You do not know their taste | Three sprays so the owner picks - the sensible move, because a car is the least forgiving fragrance space there is | ₹699 |
| Mysore Orange Blossom car spray | Somebody particular about the car | Applied by hand when they want it rather than working continuously - which suits an owner who controls everything about the interior | ₹549 |
| SOSA Safar waterless car diffuser | Hours a week behind the wheel | The premium car object almost nobody buys for themselves - and it should be given with a nebuliser refill rather than empty | ₹3,999 |
Versailles
We sell a lot of car fragrance and we talk people out of buying it more often than you would expect. The reason is always the same. Somebody has just taken delivery, the car has that specific smell of a new interior, and the instinct is to buy something to put in it straight away. Please do not. Most owners like that smell, it fades on its own within a few weeks, and something arriving on top of it reads as though you thought their new car needed fixing. Month two or three, once it has started to smell of ordinary use, is the moment - and it has a second advantage, which is that everybody else has finished congratulating them by then.
The other thing people get wrong is the register. A car is not a small room. It holds a few cubic metres of air, it sits sealed in the sun for hours, and heat does something to sweetness that has to be experienced to be believed - and unlike a room, the driver cannot walk away from it. Dry, green, citrus and marine compositions behave. If you are guessing, guess cool. And one is the right number: two of anything in a car is usually too much by May.
Two honest things. Fragrance is a finishing touch and never a fix - if a car smells of damp, of something spilled under a seat or of smoke, deal with the cause and then scent a clean car, because adding one to the other is worse than either alone. And our Vaayu is not a car product. It is a waterless nebuliser built for roughly a thousand cubic metres - a showroom rather than a vehicle or a flat - and we would rather say so than sell you one.
