Something warm, dry and classical, with more depth than any other style will take. Begin with absorption, because it is extreme here. A classic room contains silk and velvet upholstery, heavy lined curtains, wool and silk rugs, panelling, polished hardwood and veneer, and very often books, which are among the most absorbent objects in any home. All of that removes fragrance from the air continuously and gives it back slowly, so a light modern composition is swallowed within the hour and the room reads as unscented. The second factor is light: these rooms are usually darker and warmer, with lined curtains and lamps rather than large glazing, so you are not fighting the heat amplification that ruins sweet fragrance in a bright modern flat - though in an Indian summer the room still warms, so dry beats sugary even here. The third is air movement, which is slow in a formal room that is closed and used only sometimes, and that is where the characteristic closed-up smell comes from. Air these rooms before you scent them, always. Given all that, the direction is the classical one: frankincense and myrrh for a dry resinous spine, iris and orris for that cool powdery elegance that sits beautifully against silk, dry tobacco leaf for warmth without sugar, a leather facet if there is leather or dark wood in the room, sandalwood underneath, and a trace of rose or violet if you want a floral thread - a trace, not a bouquet. What to avoid: aquatic and ozonic accords and laundry-musk fresh linen, which read as modern and synthetic against gilt and old wood, sharp cologne citrus, which is absorbed and gone, and bakery gourmand, which is too edible for a formal room.
