Find the path before you find the plug point
Air enters at the door and leaves somewhere - stand the machine in between
Walk the route a patient walks: in through the entrance, past or up to the desk, across to the seating, then towards the cabins. That route is usually also the route the air takes, because it is the unobstructed part of the plan. The machine belongs somewhere in the first third of that route, ideally two to three metres inside the entrance. Not at the door, where an opening door pushes half the output back out into the lobby or the street. Not at the far end, because then the first impression - the one that actually matters - happens in air that has not been touched. If your plug points fight this, use an extension rather than moving the machine to suit the socket.
Tip: Test it for a day in each of two positions and walk in from outside each morning. Your nose after a break is the only honest instrument you have.

Get it off the floor and away from the AC
Cool mist falls, and a split unit will fire it into a wall
Two mistakes account for most of the patchiness I get asked about at this size. The first is standing the unit on the floor, usually beside a plug point behind a sofa - cool mist is heavier than the room air as it leaves the machine, so a floor-level unit scents the lower half of the room and the seated patient smells more of it than the standing one. Waist to chest height solves it. The second is placing it directly under or in front of a split AC, which takes the output and throws it at whatever the unit is pointed at, usually a wall, within two seconds. You want the machine near enough to the room's air movement to be carried, and far enough from the outlet not to be shot. A metre and a half to the side of the airflow, rather than in it, is the usual answer.
Tip: If the clinic is fully air-conditioned, note which way the vane points in summer - the path changes with the setting.

Do not put it where the nearest person sits longest
The person closest to the machine should not be the one who notices it
This is the placement rule founders skip and staff quietly resent. If the machine sits on the reception counter, the two people who spend eight hours nearest it are your front-desk staff and whoever is filling in a form - and both of them will be the first to find it too much. It also means the desk becomes the loudest point in the room, so you end up lowering the setting until the seating area gets nothing. Push the machine a metre or two away from the desk, onto a console, a shelf or a side unit on the seating side. The intensity test is unchanged: if a patient can identify the fragrance, it is too strong, and if a patient objects, the answer is to turn it down or off, never to defend it. Staff must be able to switch it off in seconds, and one seating area should stay effectively unscented.

The reason this matters is that patchiness feels like weakness.
