The Monday morning smell comes from the plant room

There is a pattern that anybody who has worked in an air-conditioned office will recognise once it is described: the floor smells distinctly worse at nine on Monday morning than it does at eleven, and worse on Monday than on any other day of the week. That pattern is diagnostic, and it points away from the desks and towards the plant room. Understanding it is useful, because it converts a vague complaint into a specific request that facilities can act on. A commercial air conditioning system moves air through an air handling unit containing filters and cooling coils, and out through ducts to the floor. The coils operate below the dew point of the air passing over them, which is how the system dehumidifies; the water that condenses runs into a tray and away through a drain. While the system is running, air is moving continuously, the coils are in active use, and the condensate is draining. When the system shuts down or runs at minimal capacity over a weekend, all of that stops. The coils and the tray remain damp. The ducts hold still air. Two days of stillness at Indian ambient temperatures is enough for microbial activity to establish on damp surfaces inside the unit, particularly if the condensate tray drains poorly and holds standing water, which is extremely common. On Monday morning the plant starts, and the first hour of operation pushes the accumulated air and whatever the damp surfaces have produced out through the ducts and into the occupied floor. By mid-morning the system has flushed itself and the smell has gone, which is precisely why it never gets investigated - by the time anybody thinks about raising it, the evidence has cleared. The remedies are all building services and all cheap. Running the air handling system for an hour or more before occupancy on Monday flushes the ductwork into an empty building rather than a full one, and it costs an hour of plant operation. Including coil cleaning in the maintenance schedule addresses the surfaces where the activity establishes. Checking that condensate trays drain properly and are not holding standing water addresses the most common single source; a tray that has been sitting in water for months is a genuine odour generator sitting in the supply air path. Filter replacement on schedule matters both for air quality and because loaded filters hold their own accumulation. None of this is exotic or expensive, and most buildings do some of it - but the pre-occupancy run in particular is frequently absent simply because nobody has connected the Monday complaint to the weekend shutdown. Two other properties of conditioned air are worth knowing when choosing a fragrance for such an office. The first is that the air is dry, often considerably drier than outside air, because dehumidification is intrinsic to how cooling works. Dry air changes how fragrance is perceived: lighter, cleaner registers read well, while heavy or sweet registers can feel dense and cloying in a cooled recirculating environment. Sizing follows the same logic as everywhere in commercial scenting. A floor plate is not a living room, and a room-sized product placed on it produces a noticeable patch and nothing beyond a few metres.
