Here is a small trap that costs people a whole winter of comfort. You come out to the car at seven in the morning in January. A car is the smallest space any of us scents, and the one we sit closest to. Two or three cubic metres of air, a metre from your face, with the windows up and the heater on for four months of the year. I say this to customers constantly and it still surprises people: almost every car fragrance problem I am sent is a dose problem, not a scent problem. The bottle is not weak and the oil is not wrong. The cabin simply gives fragrance nowhere to go, and winter takes away the little ventilation that was rescuing you in October.
That is why we sell the hanging bottle and the spray at the same price. They are the same oil. One gives you a mild level that is always there and asks nothing of you; the other gives you a strong level the moment you decide you want one. Neither is the better product, and pricing them differently would only push people toward whichever we wanted to sell. Choose by how you drive: a long daily commute is a hanging car, a car that matters most when somebody else gets into it is a spray car, and plenty of people quite sensibly run both.

Frequently asked questions
My car perfume smelled right in October and feels heavy now. Has it gone off?
Almost certainly not. What changed is the cabin rather than the oil. From November you drive with the windows up and the heater running, which means the air in the car barely exchanges and whatever is released accumulates rather than clearing, while warmer air lifts fragrance faster off the reed. Both effects push in the same direction, so an identical bottle at an identical setting reads considerably stronger. Tighten the stopper a quarter turn, drive on it for three days without touching it again, and reassess. If you use the spray, go from two sprays to one. Reduce before you replace: people who buy a second scent in December usually find the new one feels heavy within a fortnight, for exactly the same reason.
Is there a car perfume made specifically for a Tata Safari?

What genuinely differs between cars is cabin volume, the distance between the source and the far end of the cabin, how long you drive and how much of the year the heater runs. A three-row SUV is a large sealed volume with a source that can only hang at one end, which is why the useful advice for this car is about dose and placement rather than about a special formulation. The same advice applies to any three-row SUV of similar size.
Where should the hanging bottle go in a large SUV?
From the rear-view mirror, hung short so it sits close to the mirror stem rather than swinging low, and positioned so that it is never in your view of the road. That is not a soft suggestion. Anything hung from a mirror must be small, secure and completely out of the sightline, and if you find yourself looking past it at a junction it is in the wrong place and needs shortening or moving. Keep the glass clear of direct contact with leather, fabric and the dashboard, because a bottle resting against trim is a mark waiting to happen, and make sure it cannot swing into anything under braking. If you would rather have nothing in that space at all, the spray format is the same oil at the same price and hangs from nothing.
Does the heater damage the fragrance or make it evaporate away faster?
It does not damage anything, and the oil does not spoil. What warmth does is raise the rate at which fragrance lifts off the source, which means a heated cabin releases more per minute than a cold one from the same bottle at the same stopper setting. In practice that shows up as a stronger-smelling car in winter and, over a season of daily heated driving, a hanging bottle that reaches the end of its four to six weeks toward the shorter end of that range rather than the longer. Neither is a fault. Tighten the stopper for the season and you moderate both effects at once. When the glass does run out, a 15ml refill from Rs 399 fills the same bottle for another four to six weeks and saves Rs 50 to Rs 60 against buying new.
Can I leave the hanging bottle in the car through a cold night and a warm afternoon?
Yes. A car that has stood overnight in the cold will smell quieter when you first get in and then build as the heater warms the cabin, which is another argument for setting the stopper on the low side and letting the warmth do the rest.
