You can have a beautiful fragrance and still smell almost nothing if it is in the wrong spot. Scent does not travel on its own; it goes where the air goes. Once you understand how air moves through a room, placing a diffuser stops being guesswork.

How does airflow change the way fragrance spreads in a room?
Scent travels with the air, so airflow decides where a fragrance ends up and how evenly it spreads. Gentle air movement is ideal: it picks up the fragrance and distributes it through the room so the whole space smells of it. Strong airflow, like a fast fan or a wide-open window, works against you, either carrying the scent straight out of the room or diluting it before it can build. Still, stagnant air is the other extreme; with nothing to move it, fragrance pools near its source and the rest of the room smells of little. The skill is placing fragrance where there is gentle circulation, not a draught and not dead air.

The honest tension with ventilation: good airflow is essential for a healthy home, and I would never suggest sealing a room to trap scent. But the same open windows that keep air fresh also carry fragrance out. The answer is not to choose between fresh air and scent; it is to use a continuous source that keeps replacing what the airflow carries away.
Strong, direct airflow is the usual reason a fragrance disappoints. A diffuser placed right under a ceiling fan on full, or beside a wide-open window with a breeze coming through, never gets a chance to build, because the scent is carried off as fast as it is released. Move it a little out of the direct stream and the same product suddenly seems much stronger.

A practical trick for a larger home is to use airflow rather than fight it.
