Why not scent a lift? Because the volume is tiny, occupancy swings from empty to full, ventilation is fixed by the equipment, and nobody can leave until the doors open.
How do I make lifts pleasant then? Through the lift lobby, which every guest passes twice, and through car cleaning and ventilation maintenance rather than through fragrance.
A lift is a box with twelve people in it
The short answer is that a luxury hotel lift should smell of nothing you have put there, and it is worth setting out why, because it is the one enclosure in a hotel where we would say never rather than rarely. Four characteristics make a lift car uniquely unsuitable, and each of them is an amplified version of an argument that applies elsewhere in the building. The first is volume. A lift car is the smallest enclosed space in your property - a few cubic metres. Small rooms reach a steady level in minutes; a lift car reaches one in seconds, and then holds it, because there is nowhere for anything to go. That means the margin between right and too much is not narrow, it is almost non-existent, and any error is instantly at full strength on everybody inside. The second is occupancy density. A lift goes from empty to eight or twelve people between two floors. Nowhere else in your hotel packs that many people into that little air, and people themselves are a considerable input - breath, warmth, perfume, cologne, damp coats in monsoon, luggage, and whatever they have brought from outside. A lift at eight in the morning during check-out, or at seven in the evening when everybody is going down to dinner, is already a busy air. Adding a source to it is adding to something that is already at capacity. The third is ventilation you do not control. A lift car's air is managed by the lift equipment - typically a small fan and the clearances around the car - and that provision was specified by the lift manufacturer, is not adjustable by you, and is designed for temperature and code compliance rather than for clearing anything. So unlike a corridor, where you can at least investigate the supply and extract, a lift offers you no lever at all on the clearing side of the equation. Whatever goes in stays until the doors open. The fourth is escape, and it is the same argument that keeps guest rooms quiet, applied to a space a fraction of the size. Nobody in a lift can leave until it stops. If a guest finds the air unpleasant, they have thirty seconds to a minute of no options, standing close to strangers, and no way to signal it. Anything a person cannot escape should be specified well below what you would choose for a space they pass through - and in a lift, well below means nothing. There is a fifth consideration that is practical rather than sensory: a lift car is a piece of machinery with a service life and a maintenance regime, and installing anything in it introduces a device into an environment governed by lift safety rules and maintained by a contractor who did not put it there. That is a conversation nobody needs. So what should you actually do? Put the continuity in the lift lobby. The lift lobby is the right space for this in every respect: every guest passes it twice on every journey, it is a proper enclosed room that holds a level reliably rather than a machine, it sits at the natural transition between the vertical journey and the horizontal one, and it is the place where a guest steps out of a shared box and back into your building. A single low source there does more for the sense of one coherent property than anything in the car ever could. A Sukoon at Rs 1,799 suits a lift lobby, and a Boond at Rs 799 suits a small one. Use the same register as the rest of the building at a low level, because a change of level reads as the building quietening while a change of register reads as a fault - Quiet Luxury, with white tea, bergamot and cedar, holds its character at a whisper, which is exactly what a lift lobby needs; Forest Suite, with cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, is dry and structural; White Tea Serenity, with white tea, aloe and cedar, is the softest we make. Old-World Glamour and Lobby Bar are public-space registers and would be too assertive in a small transitional space. All seven are Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml, they are SOSA's own interpretations, and we are independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. Machines take the water-based Hotel Collection at three to six drops per tank with a rinse between scents, never reed oil, which can damage them. There is a useful side effect of doing it this way. Lift shafts are among the strongest vertical air paths in any building, moving air between floors continuously as cars travel and doors open. A lift lobby source therefore contributes a little to the general air of the floor without you having to scent a corridor - which is convenient, because a corridor is already carrying room air at every door opening, trolley air and riser air, and clears almost none of it. Now the part that matters if your lift does smell of something. Because you cannot add anything, everything about a lift's air is a cleaning and maintenance question, and there are four usual causes. Carpet and floor covering, which absorbs and holds, particularly in monsoon when people bring in wet shoes and umbrellas - this is the commonest single cause of a lift that smells of nothing identifiable but is not pleasant, and the answer is cleaning frequency and, eventually, replacement. Upholstered or timber wall panels, which hold in the same way. The car's ventilation fan and its filter or grille, which collects dust and is rarely part of anybody's cleaning schedule because it belongs to the lift contractor rather than to housekeeping. And the shaft and pit, which in older buildings can carry damp, oil or drainage smell upward into the car - that is a maintenance matter and it is worth raising with your lift contractor rather than treating as a housekeeping failure. Note the pattern: none of them is solved by fragrance, and all of them get worse if fragrance is added, because fragrance combines with an existing smell rather than masking it, the combination is worse than either alone, and it carries the message that somebody knew and chose to cover it. In a lift, thirty seconds before a guest reaches their floor, that is a poor thought to leave them with. One more consideration for properties that are tempted anyway, usually because a competitor has done it. A lift is a shared space with a completely uncontrolled audience: business guests, families, elderly guests, staff carrying linen, contractors, and people who are unwell. Your least tolerant guest and your most sensitive one will both be in that box at some point, standing next to each other, and neither can leave. In a hotel, specifying for the least tolerant guest rather than the average one is the correct instinct everywhere; in a lift it is the only defensible position. Finally, check it the way it is used. Once a month, have somebody who does not work in the building ride a lift from the top floor to the lobby at a busy hour, with other people in it, and report whether the car smelled of anything. That is the real test, because an empty lift at three in the afternoon is not the space guests experience. Your own team cannot supply the reading, because everybody who works in a hotel adapts to a steady background within about an hour of arriving and stops perceiving it. We make no therapeutic, medical or wellness claims of any kind, and SOSA ambient fragrance is for the air of a room only. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Volume pricing is quoted against a zone list on WhatsApp.
And no ventilation you control
A luxury hotel lift should smell of nothing you have put there, and this is the one enclosure where we would say never rather than rarely. Four characteristics make a car uniquely unsuitable, each an amplified version of an argument that applies elsewhere. Volume: a lift car is the smallest enclosed space in the property, a few cubic metres, reaching a steady level in seconds and then holding it, so the margin between right and too much is almost non-existent and any error is instantly at full strength on everybody inside. Occupancy density: empty to twelve people between two floors, which nowhere else in your hotel matches, and people are a considerable input in themselves - breath, warmth, cologne, damp coats in monsoon, luggage - so a lift at eight in the morning is already a busy air. Ventilation you do not control: the car's air is managed by lift equipment specified by the manufacturer, not adjustable by you, and designed for temperature and code compliance rather than clearing - so unlike a corridor, where you can at least investigate supply and extract, a lift offers no lever at all. And escape: nobody can leave until the doors open, which is the same argument that keeps guest rooms quiet, applied to a space a fraction of the size - thirty seconds to a minute with no options, standing close to strangers. There is a fifth, practical: a lift car is machinery governed by safety rules and maintained by a contractor who did not install your device. So put the continuity in the lift lobby, which every guest passes twice, which is a proper room that holds a level, and which sits at the transition between the vertical journey and the horizontal one. And if a lift does smell of something, it is carpet, panels, the fan grille or the shaft - all cleaning and maintenance, none of it solved by fragrance.

Versailles
Most customer gifts are bought to be handed over, not to be kept: the sweet box is finished by the family that evening, the keychain joins a drawer, the branded pen was never really a gift at all. Then the moment that cost your business lakhs to create - the new car, the new home, the big purchase - is remembered with nothing. A fragrance gift keeps that moment alive, because scent is the sense wired closest to memory: months later, your customer is still in the middle of the experience you gave them.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and everything we make is built for Indian lives - car diffusers that survive a Mumbai summer, reed diffusers that hold through the monsoon, alcohol-free formulas safe to gift across every customer profile. If you run a dealership, a project, a hotel, a showroom or a team, message the bulk desk on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - tell me the customer moment and the volumes, and I will help you design the programme myself. The business conversations are my favourite kind: one good gifting programme teaches me more about a category than a year of retail orders.
And a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so your customer gift quietly gives twice. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory memory research shows scent-linked memories are unusually durable and emotionally vivid, which is why a used-daily fragrance gift sustains brand association in a way consumable or novelty gifts do not; customer-experience research consistently finds that peak moments (delivery, possession, checkout) disproportionately shape how the whole purchase is remembered. Fragrance preference is personal: volume gifting programmes should default to gentle fresh, green and lightly floral registers, and to space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) rather than skin perfume. SOSA range: Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance from Rs 299; car perfumes from Rs 449 (spray and hanging, alcohol-free); attars Nawaab, Ameeri, Mastani and Adaa from Rs 379 (3ml/6ml/12ml, alcohol-free); Attar Trio from Rs 1,055; perfumes from Rs 499; reed diffusers from Rs 749; Boond Rs 799, Sukoon Rs 1,799 and Megh Rs 3,499 ultrasonic diffusers; SOSA Safar waterless car and travel diffuser Rs 3,999 (rechargeable, three hotel-inspired scents included); SOSA Vaayu waterless scent machine Rs 11,999 (~1000m³, app + timer).
