Why does removal matter more than addition? Because fragrance combines with an existing smell rather than masking it, so a register over an unaddressed source produces something worse than either alone.
Which register then? Clean, dry and quietly warm - Quiet Luxury as the default, or Old-World Glamour used lightly in a gold-led showroom.
Four smells a jewellery store actually has
Luxury in this category is mostly subtraction, and it is worth taking a showroom apart before deciding what to add to it. Walk into a jewellery store that reads as genuinely expensive and catalogue what is not there, then walk into one that does not and catalogue what is. Four sources account for almost all of the difference. The first is the pantry, and it is the largest by a distance. Cooking smell is aerosolised oil rather than a light vapour, which means it travels much further than people expect, lands on soft surfaces - carpet, upholstered seating, the fabric of a display case interior - and stays there. In a showroom where staff eat on the premises, which is most of them, the pantry is producing this every day. It is never scented, at any time, and the answer is mechanical: adequate extraction, ducted properly, and ideally a pantry that can be closed off from the floor. Where a store is being fitted out, this is the single most valuable thing on the list, because ducting can be run while the walls are open and cannot afterwards. The second is new carpet, joinery, adhesives, sealers and paint. These off-gas volatile compounds for weeks after a fit-out, and considerably longer in a sealed air-conditioned space with limited fresh air, and they are exactly what a customer means when they say a store smells new in an unpleasant way. Fragrance layered over that does not mask it - the two combine, and the combination is consistently worse than either component alone, and the store will conclude the fragrance was the problem. Ventilate through the period instead, and write into any opening checklist that fragrance is the last item in, after the builder's clean and after the space has been aired. The third is air conditioning. In a showroom running ten or twelve hours a day, sealed against the street, the system is doing all the air handling, and an unserviced unit or a neglected filter produces a stale, faintly damp note that customers register as a tired shop. That is a maintenance item, not a fragrance one, and it should be on a service schedule. It is also worth noting that a ducted system joins the floor into one body of moving air, so fragrance distributes further and faster than the plan suggests - which argues for a lower setting rather than a higher one - and that a source placed at a return grille is pulled straight into the system before doing anything in the room while consuming product at full rate. Nothing should be introduced into ductwork without the HVAC designer; our machines are standalone room units. The fourth is the back of house: the staff washroom, a strongroom corridor, a stockroom, a back office that is never aired. Those spaces push their air onto the floor every time a door opens, and a washroom with weak extract or a dry trap will do it continuously. Fix the extract, run the taps in any washroom that is rarely used so the traps do not dry out, and open the back corridors. Only after those four does the register matter, and then it should be light. Clean, dry and quietly warm is the direction. Quiet Luxury, with white tea, bergamot and cedar, is the default and the most generally useful, because it has enough structure to register as something and not enough character to be identified - which is right in a room where the customer should be looking at the product. Old-World Glamour, with amber, violet and woods, is the richest register we make, and a gold-led showroom with warm lighting, marble and velvet is one of the very few interiors that genuinely carries it, used lightly. White Tea Serenity, with white tea, aloe and cedar, suits a pale contemporary diamond boutique. Forest Suite, with cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, suits a store built on dark timber and leather. The seven Hotel Collection registers are Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml, and they are SOSA's own interpretations, since we are independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. What fails is sweetness, faster here than almost anywhere: sweet registers read as mass-market air care, and a store selling at these prices carrying that association loses more in the first three seconds than the fit-out can recover. On level, keep it low, and set it for two things rather than for the room. Staff stand on the floor for nine or ten hours a day, often in a fixed position behind a counter, and they did not choose the register - so set it with them, lower it without argument if they raise it, and give a manager a physical control rather than an app held at head office. And a jewellery transaction is a close-range interaction, with a customer and a salesperson perhaps sixty centimetres apart across a counter for long stretches, which is much closer than most retail; a level that reads as pleasant across a room can read as strong at that distance. The room is also hard - marble, glass, mirror and polished metal hold no fragrance at all - so it travels further and reads sharper than a soft interior would and swings between runs, which argues for a low continuous setting rather than strong intermittent bursts. On systems, the plan decides rather than the floor area. A machine distributes through connected moving air and cannot cross a closed door, so the open showroom is one zone with one machine, and every private cabin, bridal lounge, office and washroom behind a door is its own. The Vaayu at Rs 11,999 covers a large floor - waterless with no tank, coverage up to 1,000 square metres or roughly 10,700 square feet, with Bluetooth app and timer control. The Megh at Rs 3,499 has a 6L tank, the Sukoon at Rs 1,799 covers a cabin and the Boond at Rs 799 a small room, and reeds behind doors are Rs 749 to Rs 849, three to four months a bottle, refills at Rs 2,399 for 300ml and Rs 3,499 for 500ml. Machines take the water-based Hotel Collection only at three to six drops per tank with a rinse between scents, never reed oil, which can damage them. We make no claim that fragrance affects mood, dwell time, purchase behaviour, spend or wellbeing. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Volume pricing is quoted against the specification on WhatsApp.
Luxury as the absence of those
Luxury here is mostly subtraction. Four sources account for almost all of the difference between a showroom that reads expensive and one that does not. Fourth, back of house - the staff washroom, a strongroom corridor, a stockroom, an unaired office - which push their air onto the floor every time a door opens, and a dry trap does it continuously. Only then the register, and lightly: Quiet Luxury as the default, with enough structure to register and not enough character to be identified; Old-World Glamour used lightly in a gold-led room with warm lighting, marble and velvet, one of the few interiors that genuinely carries it; White Tea Serenity in a pale contemporary boutique; Forest Suite where dark timber and leather lead. From Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml. Sweetness fails fastest, reading as mass-market air care. Keep the level low and set it for the staff who stand nine or ten hours and for the counter, a sixty-centimetre interaction, rather than for the doorway - and remember the room is hard, so fragrance travels and swings, which argues for low and continuous. Machines take Hotel Collection only, never reed oil. We make no claim about mood, dwell time, purchase behaviour, spend or wellbeing. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards. Versailles
Most customer gifts are bought to be handed over, not to be kept: the sweet box is finished by the family that evening, the keychain joins a drawer, the branded pen was never really a gift at all. Then the moment that cost your business lakhs to create - the new car, the new home, the big purchase - is remembered with nothing. A fragrance gift keeps that moment alive, because scent is the sense wired closest to memory: months later, your customer is still in the middle of the experience you gave them.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and everything we make is built for Indian lives - car diffusers that survive a Mumbai summer, reed diffusers that hold through the monsoon, alcohol-free formulas safe to gift across every customer profile. If you run a dealership, a project, a hotel, a showroom or a team, message the bulk desk on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - tell me the customer moment and the volumes, and I will help you design the programme myself. The business conversations are my favourite kind: one good gifting programme teaches me more about a category than a year of retail orders.
And a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so your customer gift quietly gives twice. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory memory research shows scent-linked memories are unusually durable and emotionally vivid, which is why a used-daily fragrance gift sustains brand association in a way consumable or novelty gifts do not; customer-experience research consistently finds that peak moments (delivery, possession, checkout) disproportionately shape how the whole purchase is remembered. Fragrance preference is personal: volume gifting programmes should default to gentle fresh, green and lightly floral registers, and to space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) rather than skin perfume. SOSA range: Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance from Rs 299; car perfumes from Rs 449 (spray and hanging, alcohol-free); attars Nawaab, Ameeri, Mastani and Adaa from Rs 379 (3ml/6ml/12ml, alcohol-free); Attar Trio from Rs 1,055; perfumes from Rs 499; reed diffusers from Rs 749; Boond Rs 799, Sukoon Rs 1,799 and Megh Rs 3,499 ultrasonic diffusers; SOSA Safar waterless car and travel diffuser Rs 3,999 (rechargeable, three hotel-inspired scents included); SOSA Vaayu waterless scent machine Rs 11,999 (~1000m³, app + timer). Listed prices are per-unit store prices; volume pricing and branding are quoted on WhatsApp. The Hotel Collection and hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel or perfume house named for comparison.
