A new showroom gets two proposals in its first month. One is from whoever maintains the air-conditioning and it is about a damper. The other is from a fragrance supplier and it is about a machine. Take the first one, and do not take the second until the floor smells of nothing. This page is the order of operations, and it is short because the order does not change.
Quick answers — read this first
Ventilation vs fragrance: what should I fix first in a new appliance showroom? Ventilation, without exception. A new floor is a sealed, air-conditioned room full of curing laminates, adhesives and lacquer, plus units still releasing their packaging smell, and most showroom AC recirculates that air rather than replacing it. Find out whether the plant has a fresh-air damper and open it, or prop the doors for an hour each morning. Fragrance is the last layer, and it goes in only once the room smells of nothing.

What is the smells-of-nothing test? Stand at the specification table at the far end of the floor at five in the afternoon, after a full day's trading, and breathe. If you can name anything - plastic, adhesive, cardboard, dust, floor cleaner - the floor has not passed and fragrance is not yet allowed in. If you can name nothing in particular, it has passed. Repeat at ten the next morning; a floor that passes at five and fails at ten needs the pre-opening fresh-air hour.

What do I buy once it passes? Nothing until then. Afterwards, the smallest honest thing: a Mountain Breeze reed (Rs 849) at the desk of a studio under about 750 sq ft, or one SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) for a connected floor from about 1,500 sq ft, placed where the AC carries it, on a timer, key-locked. Fragrance is an interiors decision like lighting; SOSA makes no claim that it changes footfall, dwell time or sales, and no claim about what it does to any appliance.
The short answer
Short answer: ventilation first, always. A new floor is curing fit-out and unboxed units in a recirculated box; fragrance over that is a worse smell, not a better one. Find the fresh-air damper or use the doors, run a fresh-air hour daily, unbox in the back, and apply the smells-of-nothing test at five in the afternoon before any scent is considered.
The pick: buy nothing until the test passes. When it does, a Mountain Breeze reed (₹849) at the desk of a studio, or one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for a connected floor from about 1,500 sq ft, placed where the AC carries it.
Next step: ask whoever maintains the plant whether there is a fresh-air damper and whether it is open, then ask for a showroom scenting plan only after the floor has passed the test for a week.

Straight answer
Ventilation vs fragrance: what should I fix first in a new appliance showroom?
Ventilation, and it is not close. The two are not alternatives; they do opposite jobs, and a new showroom needs the first one for weeks before it has any use for the second. Here is what a new floor is, in air terms. It is a sealed, air-conditioned room whose fit-out is still curing - laminates, adhesives, lacquer, sealant, all releasing for the first month - and which has just been filled with units that arrived in film and foam. Every one of those sources is putting something into the air, and the question is only whether anything is taking it out. Most showroom AC does not. Split units, cassettes and many packaged systems recirculate: they cool the room's air and return it, and the fit-out smell goes round and round with a little more added each day. Only a plant with a fresh-air intake actually exchanges air with outside, and only when its damper is open, which on a new installation it very often is not. So the first job in a new showroom is a conversation with whoever maintains the plant: is there a damper, is it open, and can it be opened an hour before trading every day for the first month. If there is no damper, the doors are the damper - propped for the first cool hour of the morning while the floor is cleaned, the back-store extractor running to pull air through. Alongside that, the unboxing moves to the back store and the back-store door is closed, because there is no point exchanging the floor's air if the floor keeps being refilled. The plastic-and-packaging page is that routine in full. Now the fragrance half, and why it comes last. A diffuser adds a smell and removes none, so a machine run in a floor that still smells of adhesive produces adhesive-and-cedar, which every visitor reads as a cover-up. It also sets the machine's level against the fit-out rather than for the room, and levels set that way stay. Whether a machine can cover new plastic says no at length. So fragrance waits, and what it waits for is a test. Stand at the specification table at the far end of the floor at five in the afternoon after a full day's trading and breathe. If you can name anything, the floor has not passed. Plastic, adhesive, cardboard, hot dust, the floor cleaner - any of them means ventilation and routine are still the job. If you can name nothing in particular, it has passed, and you repeat the test at ten the next morning to catch the overnight problem, which the stale-morning page deals with. When the floor passes both, for a week, spend a little: a Mountain Breeze reed at ₹849 at the desk of a studio under about 750 sq ft, or one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 from about 1,500 sq ft of connected floor - waterless, on a timer, key-locked - placed on the wall the AC supply crosses so the same air that is now clean carries it, in the register a premium showroom should smell of. Fragrance is an interiors decision like lighting or music: SOSA makes no claim that it changes footfall, dwell time, conversion or sales, no claim about what it does to any appliance or finish, and it is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or extraction. Any live kitchen or coffee counter stays unscented. Ask for a showroom scenting plan after the test, not before.

Fragrance waits for the smells-of-nothing test - the far table at five, then ten the next morning. Then a reed (Rs 849) or a Vaayu (Rs 11,999) by size.
One SOSA Vaayu - waterless, timer and key-lock, ₹11,999 - is the last step in the order, for a connected floor from about 1,500 sq ft that has passed the test. This page puts it last for a reason.

SOSA Vaayu
Last in the order - a connected floor from about 1,500 sq ft
SOSA Vaayu
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft on one unit, Rs 11,999. No water, so it adds no moisture and leaves no residue; 1h/4h/8h/24h timer; adjustable intensity; key-lock; under 38dB; wall or HVAC mount so the source sits on the supply path the clean air now travels. It has no ventilation function and replaces nothing on the earlier cards.
From ₹11,999
SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
Last in the order - the desk of a studio under about 750 sq ft
SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
Himalayan pine, sage and cedar - the driest register SOSA makes, and the one that reads as a well-kept home. 50ml Rs 849 lasts 6-8 weeks; 130ml Rs 1,349 lasts 14-18 weeks. Alcohol-free, six fibre reeds, flip weekly. Reaches one desk zone. The cheapest honest step, taken after the floor has passed the test for a week.
From ₹849
SOSA Vaayu
Step five of five
SOSA Vaayu Waterless Diffuser
1000m³ coverage on a single unit, Rs 11,999, adjustable intensity, 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, key-lock, under 38dB. The four 100ml bottles in the box are the supply; confirm refill availability with SOSA. It goes in after ventilation, unboxing discipline, cleaning and the test - and it does none of their jobs.

The order of operations, in five steps

Take them in sequence. Each step is a precondition for the next, and the fifth is the only one that costs money.

1
The damper conversation
Find out whether fresh air enters the room at all
Most owners cannot say where fresh air enters their showroom, and on a new fit-out the honest answer is often nowhere. Split and cassette systems recirculate by design; packaged and ducted plants may have a fresh-air intake with a damper that the installer left closed. The first job is to ask whoever maintains the plant, in those words: is there a damper, is it open, and can it be opened an hour before trading. If the answer is yes, that hour goes on the opening checklist. If the answer is no, the doors take over on the next card. The central-AC placement page is about where a machine goes on a plant like this, later; this card is about whether the plant moves any air out at all.
Test: hold a tissue at the supply grille with the doors shut. It tells you air is moving, not that it is fresh. Only the damper or the doors make it fresh.
2
The fresh-air hour
Damper open or doors propped, every morning, for the first month
Whether by damper or by doors, the room is emptied of its night before anybody trades in it, every day, for at least the first month while the fit-out cures. Damper: AC on, damper open, an hour before opening. Doors: propped for the first cool hour while the floor is cleaned, the back-store extractor running, closed twenty minutes before trading so the room is cool for the first visitor. It goes on the written opening checklist so it survives a day off. This is the single routine that most shortens the time a new floor spends smelling new, and why a showroom smells stale in the morning is the same hour for the same reason on a floor that has been open for years.
Rule: if the fresh-air hour is not written down, it will stop the first week the person who does it is away.
3
Stop refilling the room
Unbox in the back, close the door on the cardboard, clean the tops
Exchanging the floor's air is pointless if the floor is refilled every delivery. Units are unboxed in the back store, film and foam into a closed bin, a day standing before display. Boxes flattened and off site the same day; the back-store door closed. The tops of tall units and the vents on the weekly cleaning list, because a new floor's dust is fit-out dust and it is the worst kind. And the floor cleaner unscented, because a pine cleaner mopped nightly over a new stone floor is the strongest fragrance in the building. The electronics-store smell is that list in full, and the dusty-after-cleaning page is the cleaning order on its own.

4
The test
The far table at five, and again at ten the next morning
The smells-of-nothing test is the gate between the first three steps and the last. Stand at the specification table at the far end of the floor at five in the afternoon after a full day's trading and breathe, and write down anything you can name. Then do it again at ten the next morning, before the doors have opened long. A floor that fails at five still has a source - go back to step three. A floor that passes at five and fails at ten has an overnight problem - go back to step two. A floor that passes both for a week is ready. The test is deliberately dull, because the decision it gates is the one that most often gets made too early.
Rule: if you can name it, it has not passed. "A bit new" is a name.
5
Fragrance
Last, lowest, and on the wall the clean air now crosses
Only now. The register for an appliance showroom is a well-kept home: dry cedar, sage, tea and light woods on wood, stone and dark glass; a clean lemon-and-mint on a white, handleless floor. Nothing sweet, and in a kitchen-appliance showroom nothing edible, because the hob and coffee counter own those smells and stay unscented. The level is set for the advisor who stands there all day - noticed at the first display, forgotten by the specification table. A reed at the desk below about 750 sq ft; one Vaayu from about 1,500 sq ft, on the wall the AC supply crosses, so the same ventilated air that passed the test carries the scent across the floor and away from the return. The machine adds one thing to clean air. It cannot be used to make air clean.
SOSA Vaayu
The Vaayu - waterless, timer, key-lock, wall or HVAC mount - is step five, and it does nothing that steps one to four do.

The SOSA principle
Ventilation removes and fragrance adds, and a new showroom needs weeks of the first before it has any use for the second.
Damper or doors, a fresh-air hour, unbox in the back, the far table at five. Then one dry register on the wall the clean air crosses.
SOSA Vaayu
Step five, for later: SOSA Vaayu, ₹11,999, waterless, timer and key-lock, on the wall the AC supply crosses, once the floor has passed the test.

Ventilation and fragrance, job by job

Every job a new floor's air needs, and which of the two does it. Fragrance appears once, on the last row, and does nothing on the others.

The SOSA order
What ventilation does, what fragrance does, and what neither does
The job Ventilation or fragrance - and which product
Removing curing fit-out smell - laminate, adhesive, lacquer
Ventilation, and time. Damper open or doors propped an hour before opening for the first month. Fragrance over it makes adhesive-and-cedar.
Removing new plastic and packaging
Ventilation, plus the back-store routine so the floor is not refilled. Nothing diffused shortens it.
Clearing the overnight accumulation
Ventilation - the fresh-air hour, every morning. The AC alone recirculates it; a machine at nine sits on top of it.
Removing fit-out dust and the cleaning-product smell
Neither - cleaning. Tops and vents weekly, filters monthly, an unscented floor cleaner. Ventilation helps; fragrance does nothing.
Clearing a live-kitchen or coffee demonstration
Extraction, during and after. Fragrance never, in that zone, at any point in the order.
SOSA VaayuGiving a floor that smells of nothing the register of a well-kept home
Fragrance, last. A reed at the desk below about 750 sq ft; one Vaayu from about 1,500 sq ft on the supply wall. View →

This order is the spine of the whole family. Why a premium showroom still smells like an electronics store names every source it is applied to, can a scent machine cover new-plastic smell is the reason fragrance sits last, and ventilation versus fragrance after a cooking demo is the same principle applied to a live kitchen, where extraction does the removing. SOSA makes no claim that any of this changes footfall, dwell time, conversion or sales, and no claim about what fragrance does to any appliance or finish on display.

SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
The cheapest honest step, after the test: one Mountain Breeze reed at the desk of a studio, ₹849 for 50ml, 6-8 weeks, reaches one desk zone.
Air first, routine second, the test third - then, if it passes, one machine
Tell us what the plant is, whether it has a damper, when the floor was fitted and what the far table smells of at five. We will say honestly where you are in the order.

Fragrance is an interiors decision like lighting or music, with no claim about footfall, dwell time, conversion or sales, and no claim about what it does to any appliance or finish. A note from Sonal

I am, technically, the second proposal in this story - the one about the machine - and I still tell every new showroom to take the first one. A floor in its first month is curing, and most of the air-conditioning I see recirculates the curing smell rather than removing it. No fragrance changes that. What changes it is a damper somebody did not know they had, or an hour of open doors, and a routine that stops the floor being refilled with film and cardboard every delivery.

The test is the part I would ask you to take seriously, because it is the gate that gets opened too early. The far table, five in the afternoon, then ten the next morning. Name what you smell. If you can name it, the floor has not passed, and the answer to "but the launch is next week" is that launch guests forgive a floor for smelling new far sooner than they forgive it for smelling like a cover-up. The electronics-store page lists what you will find, and the plastic-and-packaging page is the biggest single item on it.

When it passes, the last step is small: a Mountain Breeze reed at the desk of a studio, or one Vaayu at ₹11,999 on the wall the supply crosses, on a timer with the lock on, from about 1,500 sq ft, and any live kitchen or coffee counter left unscented. Fragrance is an interiors decision like lighting or music; SOSA makes no claim that it moves footfall, dwell time, conversion or sales, and no claim about what it does to any appliance on display. It is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or extraction. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Does a new showroom's air-conditioning count as ventilation?
Usually not. Split units, cassettes and many packaged systems recirculate: they cool the room's own air and return it, so a curing fit-out smell goes round and round with more added each day. Only a plant with a fresh-air intake exchanges room air with outside air, and only while its damper is open, which on a new installation is often not the case. Ask whoever maintains the plant; if there is no damper, the doors propped for an hour each morning do the job.
How long should a new appliance showroom run a fresh-air routine before adding fragrance?
Until it passes the smells-of-nothing test for a week, which with the routine is typically two to four weeks and without it can be months. The routine is a fresh-air hour before opening every day, units unboxed in the back store, the back-store door closed, tops and vents cleaned and an unscented floor cleaner. Fragrance is not added on a date; it is added when the far table at five and at ten smells of nothing.
What if the showroom launch is before the floor passes the test?
Launch without fragrance. A floor that still smells slightly new reads as new, which guests forgive; a floor that smells of adhesive under cedar reads as a cover-up, which they do not, and the level set to achieve the cover-up will still be there a year later. Run the fresh-air hour, keep unboxing in the back, and add the register in the weeks after the launch once the test passes. SOSA would rather you spend nothing for the launch.
Can I run the scent machine and the ventilation at the same time in a new showroom?
Once the floor has passed the test, yes - the machine is placed on the wall the AC supply crosses precisely so the ventilated air carries it, and the fresh-air hour continues every morning before the timer starts. Before the floor passes, no: the machine adds one more thing to air that is still full of fit-out, and the ventilation then has to remove that as well. The order is ventilation first, fragrance last, and they overlap only after the test.
Where does the SOSA Vaayu go in a newly ventilated showroom once it is allowed in?
On the wall the AC supply crosses, high, so the clean air carries the scent across the sales floor and away from the return, and never on the demo kitchen's side. One SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 covers a connected floor of about 1,500 to 3,000 sq ft, waterless, on a timer that starts after the fresh-air hour, key-locked at a level set from the far table. Under about 750 sq ft a Mountain Breeze reed at Rs 849 at the desk is the honest answer.
