Let me be honest, because most articles overcomplicate this: an ultrasonic diffuser and an ultrasonic humidifier work the same way, and they overlap heavily. A diffuser is really a small humidifier that also carries a few drops of fragrance; a pure humidifier just adds moisture with a much bigger tank and no scent. SOSA units do both - the Megh is humidifier-first, the Boond and Sukoon are diffuser-first. I am Sonal Sahani, an ISIPCA-trained perfumer, and here is the honest distinction.
Quick answers — read this first
Are they the same machine? Nearly. Both use an ultrasonic plate to mist water. A diffuser adds scent; a humidifier maximises moisture with a bigger tank.

So which do I need? Want scent (and a little moisture)? A diffuser. Want serious dry-air relief? A large humidifier-grade unit like the Megh.

Do SOSA units do both? Yes. The Megh is humidifier-first at 6L; the Boond and Sukoon are diffuser-first but still add moisture as they scent.
The short answer
Honest truth: an ultrasonic diffuser IS a small scented humidifier - the tech overlaps.
Diffuser: smaller tank, made to carry fragrance; the Boond and Sukoon.
Humidifier-grade: big tank, moisture-first; the 6L Megh runs up to 100 hrs.
Both: cool mist, no heat, auto shut-off; SOSA water-based fragrance only for scent.
Which SOSA diffuser by room (live specs)Boond ₹799 — 300ml, desk/bedside, up to 6 hrsSukoon ₹1799 — 500ml, bedroom, 16-18 hrs, remote+lightMegh ₹3499 — 6L, whole room, up to 100 hrs
Illustrative only. Match tank and runtime to the room: Boond for a desk, Sukoon for a bedroom, Megh for a living room or dry winter air.
Straight answer
What is the difference between an ultrasonic diffuser and a humidifier?
The honest answer is that they overlap almost completely. Both use an ultrasonic plate to break water into a cool mist, so an ultrasonic diffuser is, in effect, a small humidifier that also happens to carry a few drops of fragrance. A pure humidifier does the same misting but is built to add as much moisture as possible - so it has a much larger tank and usually no scent function. The practical difference is scale and purpose: a diffuser is sized and styled to fragrance a room while lightly humidifying it, while a dedicated humidifier is sized to raise a room's humidity meaningfully. SOSA units do both jobs. The 6-litre Megh is humidifier-first, made for dry AC air; the smaller Boond and Sukoon are diffuser-first, made to scent while adding a touch of moisture.
One line: a diffuser is a small scented humidifier; a pure humidifier is bigger, moisture-only. SOSA units do both.
For serious dry-air relief, the 6L Megh is humidifier-grade and still diffuses scent.

Where they overlap, honestly

I would rather clear up the confusion than sell you two machines. An ultrasonic diffuser and an ultrasonic humidifier share the exact same core: a ceramic plate vibrating at high frequency, atomising water into a cool mist. If you opened both up, you would find the same basic mechanism.

Ultrasonic humidifier: a device that vibrates water into a cool mist to raise a room's humidity. An ultrasonic diffuser is the same idea in a smaller, scent-focused form - which is why the two words are so often used for the same thing.

So where is the real line? It is one of degree, not kind. A diffuser is tuned to fragrance: modest tank, gentle output, a design that looks good on a shelf, and the ability to carry a few drops of water-based fragrance in the mist. A humidifier is tuned to moisture: a large tank, higher output, longer runtime, and often no scent function at all because its whole job is to add water to dry air.

Because they share the same engine, a diffuser always humidifies a little as it scents, and a humidifier can carry scent if it is designed to accept it. The overlap is real - which is why SOSA builds units that consciously do both.

Both are cool-mist, so neither heats the water; both have an auto shut-off when the tank empties; and both work best with clean, filtered water. The difference you feel day to day is how much moisture and how many hours you get per fill.

Which one you actually need

Instead of arguing definitions, ask what you want the machine to do. That answers it faster than any label.

You want Reach for Why
Room scent, a little moisture Boond or Sukoon (diffuser-first) Sized to fragrance a desk or bedroom while adding a touch of humidity
Serious dry-air relief, plus scent Megh 6L (humidifier-first) Large tank, up to 100 hrs, made for AC-dry and winter rooms
Both, room by room The SOSA range Small units where you want scent, the Megh where you want moisture

If your main problem is a bone-dry AC bedroom or a cracked-lip winter, you want the humidifier-grade Megh, which holds 6 litres and can run for days. If your main wish is a hotel-clean scent in a bedroom or on a desk, the Sukoon or Boond does that beautifully and humidifies gently as a bonus.

Myth: "A diffuser and a humidifier are completely different appliances." They are not - they are two points on the same spectrum. The honest question is not which category, but how much scent versus how much moisture you want.

One honest caveat. More humidity is not always better. In an already-damp or monsoon room you may not want extra moisture at all - there, run a diffuser-first unit lightly for scent, not a big humidifier.

A diffuser is a humidifier that learned to carry a scent. Choose by how much moisture you actually want.

Whichever you pick, the scent rule is the same: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance, a few drops in the tank. Raw essential oils are too thick and can clog the plate.

The SOSA range

SOSA makes three cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers for different rooms, each arriving with three of our water-based Hotel Collection fragrances so you can scent from day one. Prices and headline specs below are live from the SOSA store. Whichever you choose, use only the SOSA water-based fragrance - raw essential or carrier oils can clog the misting plate.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight. So we made three: Boond (300ml, desk), Sukoon (500ml, bedroom, with a remote and mood light) and Megh (6L, whole-room), each shipping with three of our fragrances.

They are cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers - an ultrasonic plate turns water into a fine, cool mist with no heating element, so there is no boiling water or burn risk, and each has an auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.

One thing I say on every listing and will say here: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. A few drops of our water-based fragrance in the tank mists cleanly and scents the whole room.

Frequently asked questions

Is an ultrasonic diffuser the same as a humidifier?
Almost. Both use an ultrasonic plate to mist water. A diffuser is a smaller, scent-focused humidifier; a pure humidifier is larger and moisture-focused with no scent. Honestly, they overlap far more than most articles admit.
Does a diffuser add humidity to a room?
Yes, a little. Because it works by misting water, any ultrasonic diffuser raises humidity somewhat as it scents. A dedicated humidifier simply does far more of it with a bigger tank.
Can a humidifier carry fragrance like a diffuser?
Only if it is designed to accept it. SOSA's Megh is humidifier-grade but also diffuses SOSA's water-based fragrance. Never add scent to a humidifier that is not built for it.
Which SOSA unit is best for very dry air?
The 6-litre Megh. It is humidifier-first, runs up to 100 hours per fill, and is made for AC-dry and winter rooms - while still diffusing scent if you add SOSA fragrance.
Do I always want more humidity?
No. In an already-damp or monsoon room, extra moisture is unwelcome. There, run a small diffuser-first unit lightly for scent rather than a large humidifier.
