Almost everyone searching for the "best essential oils for a diffuser" is asking the wrong question, and I would rather tell you the truth than sell you a list that damages your machine. SOSA ultrasonic diffusers are built for a water-based fragrance, not for pouring in raw essential oils. Let me explain what to use, how much, and why the popular advice to tip in neat oils will clog and shorten the life of your unit.
Quick answers — read this first
What is the best thing to put in an ultrasonic diffuser? A water-based diffuser fragrance. In a SOSA diffuser, use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance: fill the tank with clean room-temperature water and add a few drops. It rides the mist cleanly and scents the whole room.

Can I use raw essential oils in an ultrasonic diffuser? I do not recommend it in SOSA units. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy; they sit on the misting plate, clog it and can damage the unit. Use SOSA water-based fragrance instead.

How many drops of fragrance do I need? Only a few. Start with a small amount in a full tank of water, then adjust to taste. A little water-based fragrance goes a long way, which is why even the 15ml bottle lasts many fills.
The short answer
Use: SOSA water-based Hotel Collection fragrance - a few drops in clean room-temperature water.
Do not use: raw essential oils, perfumes or carrier oils - too thick, they clog the ultrasonic plate.
Water: room temperature; filtered or RO in hard-water cities; never hot water.
Remember: scent is not air purification; a diffuser makes a room smell good, it does not clean the air.
Why water-based fragrance, not raw oils (illustrative)SOSA water-based fragrance — mists cleanly, made for the plateRaw essential / carrier oils — thick, can clog & damage the unit
Illustrative only. Ultrasonic diffusers atomise water; a few drops of SOSA's water-based fragrance ride the mist. Thick raw oils sit on the plate and clog it.
Straight answer
What is the best fragrance to use in an ultrasonic diffuser?
A water-based diffuser fragrance - not raw essential oil. In a SOSA ultrasonic diffuser you fill the tank with clean room-temperature water and add a few drops of our water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the ultrasonic plate atomises the water and the scent travels on that fine, cool mist. This is the honest reframe of the "best essential oils" question: neat essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are too thick or solvent-heavy for an ultrasonic plate. They do not disperse well, they coat and clog the plate, and they can damage the unit. So the best fragrance is the one built for the machine - and for SOSA diffusers that is the water-based Hotel Collection, in seven hotel-inspired scents.

What to use, and how much

Here is the simple, honest method that keeps a SOSA diffuser working and smelling wonderful.

The three-step fill
One: fill the tank with clean, room-temperature water - filtered or RO if you live in a hard-water city, and never hot water. Two: add a few drops of SOSA water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Three: switch on. The plate turns the water into a cool mist and the fragrance travels with it.

Start conservative on the drops. A little goes a long way, so add a few, run it, and top up the scent only if you want it stronger. This is also why the sizing is generous: the 15ml (₹299) is a try-a-scent bottle, the 100ml (₹999) is the everyday value, and the 300ml (₹1799) is the lowest cost per ml for daily diffusing.

The Hotel Collection comes in seven hotel-inspired scents so you can build a small wardrobe by mood - a clean white tea for the bedroom, a warm amber for the evening, a bright citrus for entertaining. These are our own interpretations of the styles those hotels are known for; SOSA is not affiliated with or endorsed by the hotels named, and the names only describe the scent style.

Think of it the way a bartender thinks of a cocktail: the water is the base, the fragrance is the accent. You are not trying to fill the tank with scent - you are seasoning a large volume of water so the mist carries a whisper of it into the whole room.

Why raw oils clog the plate

I know the internet is full of "best essential oils for your diffuser" lists. I will not publish one, because in an ultrasonic diffuser it is bad advice. Here is the physics, plainly.

An ultrasonic diffuser has a small metal disc - the misting plate - that vibrates millions of times a second to shatter water into a fine mist. Water does this beautifully. Thick liquids do not.

Myth: pour a dozen drops of neat essential oil straight into the tank for a stronger scent.
Reality: raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are far thicker or more solvent-heavy than water. They do not atomise cleanly. They film over the plate, dull its vibration, clog it, and can permanently damage the unit. A stronger scent is not worth a dead diffuser.
Liquid Behaviour on an ultrasonic plate
SOSA water-based fragrance in water Atomises cleanly; scent rides the cool mist; plate stays clear.
Raw essential oil (neat) Too thick to atomise; films and clogs the plate; can damage the unit.
Perfume / EDP Solvent-heavy and often oily; not made for a water tank; risks residue.
Carrier oil (jojoba, almond) Very thick; coats the plate; a classic cause of "it stopped misting".
The rule I put on every listing: use only SOSA water-based Hotel Collection fragrance in these diffusers. Clean room-temperature water, a few drops, cool mist, no heat. Do that and the plate stays clean for the life of the machine.

And one honest boundary: a fragrant mist makes a room smell like a calm, expensive hotel. It does not purify the air or replace ventilation. Buy it for the pleasure of the scent, not as an air cleaner.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight. So we made three: Boond (300ml, desk), Sukoon (500ml, bedroom, with a remote and mood light) and Megh (6L, whole-room), each shipping with three of our fragrances.

They are cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers - an ultrasonic plate turns water into a fine, cool mist with no heating element, so there is no boiling water or burn risk, and each has an auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.

One thing I say on every listing and will say here: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. A few drops of our water-based fragrance in the tank mists cleanly and scents the whole room.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use essential oils in a SOSA ultrasonic diffuser?
I do not recommend it. Raw essential oils are too thick to atomise on an ultrasonic plate; they clog it and can damage the unit. Use SOSA water-based Hotel Collection fragrance instead - a few drops in clean room-temperature water.
What is the Hotel Collection fragrance made of?
It is a water-based diffuser fragrance composed in India by an ISIPCA-trained perfumer to IFRA standards, phthalate-free, in seven hotel-inspired scents. It is designed to run cleanly through a SOSA ultrasonic diffuser.
How much fragrance should I add?
Only a few drops in a full tank of clean water. Start small and increase to taste. Because a little goes a long way, even the 15ml bottle lasts many fills.
Can I put perfume or car freshener in the tank?
No. Perfumes and fresheners are solvent-heavy and not made for a water tank; they can leave residue and clog the plate. Only the water-based fragrance belongs in the tank.
Does the diffuser fragrance purify the air?
No. It makes the room smell good and adds a little cool humidity. Scent is not air purification and does not replace ventilation.
