An ensuite has to do the bathroom's whole job — beat odour, then scent — with an extra rule the others don't have: keep it on its own side of the door. The scent that makes the bathroom feel clean must not follow you into the bed.
Quick answer

The ensuite is the one bathroom where fragrance can go wrong in a very specific way. Everything you'd do in a standalone bathroom still applies — ventilate, clear odour at source, then scent — but there's a doorway a few steps from your pillow, and scent doesn't respect doorways. A bathroom fragrance that would be perfect in a guest cloakroom becomes a problem here if it's strong enough to settle over the bed at night. So the whole approach is about restraint and separation.

A reed is my default for an ensuite for two reasons. It adds no humidity to a room that's already damp after a shower, and it produces no active mist to carry scent through the connecting door. It simply holds a clean, low level. Place it on the vanity or a shelf away from the doorway to the bedroom, and it stays where it belongs.
Do: keep the reed near the far wall or window, not right by the bedroom door.

The honest caveat is the same one I give for every bathroom: fragrance never masks damp, and an ensuite is often the dampest room in the house after a hot shower. Run the fan, keep the door to the bedroom shut while you shower if you can, and scent a room that's already been aired.
