Founder Diaries · Eye Clinic Scenting · The Signature Question
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
This is the one question in the cluster where I have to argue against my own most expensive product, so let me do it in the first paragraph. A signature fragrance is only worth starting if the practice can hold it — the same composition, at the same level, on every visit, for years — because consistency is the entire product and an interrupted signature is worse than no signature at all. That makes supply, not scent, the deciding question. And there is a live gap I would rather state than let you discover: SOSA does not currently sell a separate cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu. As on every page here, this concerns the arrival zone only. Reception and waiting are hospitality space; diagnostics, examination rooms, consultation cabins, the procedure suite and any post-operative area stay fragrance-free.
Quick answers — read this first
Yes, if you can hold it. No, if you cannot. A signature is a commitment to buy the same consumable indefinitely. Choose the format whose refill you can reorder today, not the one with the best specification.

The Vaayu refill gap, stated plainly. The Vaayu ₹11,999 ships with 400ml of cold-air oil, roughly 90+ days at a mid setting, and no separate refill of that oil is sold at the time of writing. A practice planning continuous or multi-site use must confirm current availability with SOSA before committing. The water-based Hotel Collection is not a substitute and must not be used in a Vaayu.

The most reliable signature for most practices is a reed one. Mountain Breeze 130ml ₹1,349 lasts 14–18 weeks, so roughly three bottles a year — 3 × ₹1,349 = ₹4,047 — and the consumable is an ordinary catalogue item.

What this page will not claim: a signature does not calm anyone, shorten a wait, aid recovery, or affect reviews, footfall, retention or revenue. Nothing here is medical, clinical or safety advice.
The short answer
Short answer: a practice should have a signature only if three things are true — the arrival zone can be scented at all, one composition can be held at one level for years, and the consumable behind it can be bought again. If any of the three is uncertain, run an unnamed low fragrance or none, and revisit later.
Why supply decides it: a signature works by repetition. A patient who visits twice a year meets it three or four times before it means anything, so the value accrues over years and evaporates the moment the scent changes. A practice that runs out and substitutes has not saved the signature; it has replaced it with a visible inconsistency, which is worse than a neutral room.
Straight answer
Should an ophthalmology practice have a signature fragrance?
1. Only if it can hold it. A signature is not a scent choice, it is an operating commitment: one composition, one level, every day the practice is open, for as long as you intend the association to last. If you cannot see yourself buying the same consumable in two years, you do not want a signature — you want a pleasant reception, which is a smaller and perfectly respectable thing.

2. Supply is the gate, and it comes before the composition. Decide what you can re-buy, then choose within that. Reed oil and the water-based Hotel Collection are ordinary catalogue items. The Vaayu's cold-air oil is not: no separate refill is sold at the time of writing, and the 400ml in the box — roughly 90+ days at a mid setting — is the whole supply available. For a home that is an inconvenience. For a practice standardising an identity on one scent, it is a business problem, and I would not build a signature on it without a written answer from us first.

3. An interruption costs more than never starting. A neutral reception is unremarkable. A reception that smelled of one thing for eighteen months and now smells of another is a change people register, and the only thing it communicates is that something behind the scenes did not hold.

4. A signature raises your obligations, it does not lower them. Running one composition constantly for years means the fragrance-free seat matters more, not less; that the level must be locked so it does not creep up over months; and that staff who sit in it for eight hours a day should be asked about it more than once. Key-lock and scheduled run windows exist for exactly this.

5. It still lives in one zone only. Examination rooms, refraction and diagnostics, consultation cabins, dilation bays, the procedure suite and post-operative areas get nothing, signature or not. Freestanding in reception, set back from the corridor, and never mounted into shared air-conditioning in a clinical building.

6. Nothing here is clinical advice, and no business claim is made. Ventilation, infection control and patient suitability rest with you and your clinicians.

Everything SOSA makes is composed and made in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: yes if you can hold it, no if you cannot. Pick the format whose consumable you can reorder today — a reed signature at about ₹4,047 a year for a small reception, a Sukoon ₹1,899 with Hotel Collection 300ml ₹1,799 for a larger one — and do not build one on a Vaayu until refill supply is confirmed.
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuser as a reorderable signature scent for a clinic reception
The signature most single-site practices can actually keep
SOSA Mountain Breeze · Himalayan pine, sage & Indian cedar ₹1,349 / 130ml
Not the most sophisticated answer, but the most durable one: a composition you can reorder in a minute, in a format with no motor, no app and no proprietary consumable. A 130ml runs 14–18 weeks, so a reception needs roughly three bottles a year — 3 × ₹1,349 = ₹4,047 — and every bottle is identical to the last. Dry pine and sage over Indian cedar, with no sweetness and no floral weight, which is the register a clinic wants. Six fibre reeds rather than rattan; alcohol-free, phthalate-free, low-VOC, on a heat-stable coconut-derived carrier. There is one honest gap to know about: replacement reeds are not sold separately, and SOSA guidance is to refresh them every few months, so a signature run on reeds means keeping a spare bottle rather than a spare set of reeds. Stand it on a tray, out of reach; the oil marks stone and wood and there is no off switch.

Part one — what a signature actually commits you to

Practices usually arrive at this having seen it work elsewhere — a hotel group, a retail chain, an airline lounge. Those organisations have procurement departments, contracts and an account manager. What they are buying is not a fragrance but a guarantee of sameness, and that guarantee is the part a small practice has to construct for itself. Three things follow.

1
COMMITMENT ONE · CONSTANCY IS THE PRODUCT
A signature accrues slowly and breaks instantly
A patient who attends twice a year meets your reception three or four times before it registers as characteristic of you rather than as background. The value builds over years, which also means it is destroyed in a week. If supply stops and you substitute the nearest available composition, you have not preserved anything — you have introduced a change, and a change is the only thing about a signature anyone consciously notices. That is the argument for an unglamorous, reliably stocked option over an impressive one, and for not starting until you are sure: a neutral reception can be scented later, while a signature that lapses cannot be un-lapsed.
The rule: never start a signature you would not be able to continue if your first choice of machine broke tomorrow.
2
COMMITMENT TWO · THE SUPPLY TEST, AND THE HONEST GAP
Decide what you can re-buy before you decide what you like
SOSA Vaayu waterless cold-air machine, supplied with 400ml of oil and no separate refill sold at presentVaayu waterless₹11,999 · confirm refill firstHere is the position as it stands, stated as plainly as I can. Reed compositions and the water-based Hotel Collection for ultrasonic machines are ordinary catalogue products you can reorder yourself. The Vaayu is different: it ships with 400ml of cold-air oil lasting roughly ninety days or more at a mid setting, and no separate Vaayu refill oil is sold at the time of writing. The Hotel Collection is water-based, made for ultrasonic machines, and must not be used in a Vaayu despite sharing scent names — so it is not a workaround. If a Vaayu is genuinely the right machine for your arrival zone, buy it for what it does; but a practice planning continuous running, and certainly one planning several branches, should get a current answer through the contact page before making one scent the identity of the business. Those Hotel Collection scents are inspired by the atmosphere of well-known hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian brand, unaffiliated with any hotel group.
The question to ask us in writing: can I buy this exact oil, in this quantity, in eighteen months?
3
COMMITMENT THREE · THE OBLIGATIONS IT CREATES
Constant exposure means more discipline, not less
Running one composition permanently changes three practical things. The level must be locked, because a setting anyone can nudge will climb over eighteen months — nobody ever adjusts a diffuser downward — and key-lock plus a fixed run window prevents it. The fragrance-free option becomes more important, because a permanent scent is a permanent condition of visiting you: a seat the fragrance does not reach, and staff who know where it is, belong in place before the signature starts. And the front desk should be asked periodically, not once — they sit in that air for years, and your own nose adapts to your own building within minutes.

Part two — the requirements, and where SOSA stands

Seven things a signature needs, and an honest column on what is actually available today. Two of the rows are the reason this page exists.

The signature requirements table
What holding a signature demands, and what is published at the time of writing
Requirement Why a practice needs it Where SOSA stands today Verdict
A repeatable consumable ★ The scent must be identical in two years or the signature is not one Reed oil and water-based Hotel Collection are catalogue items; Vaayu cold-air oil has no separate refill listed Green for reeds and ultrasonic; open question for Vaayu — ask first
Continuous availability of one composition A discontinued scent ends a signature at no notice No discontinuation policy or product-life commitment is published Keep a reserve; do not assume permanence for any single item
Consistency across several branches Two branches with different scents is worse than none with any No multi-location programme is published Single site first; discuss multi-site through the contact page
Bulk or commercial purchasing terms Predictable cost and invoicing for a recurring operational spend No bulk pricing, corporate account, slab or stated invoicing arrangement is published Assume retail pricing; ask rather than assume
A locked, non-drifting level Settings creep upward over months when anyone can change them Key-lock, adjustable intensity and 1h / 4h / 8h / 24h run windows on the Vaayu; steady / 2H / 4H timers on the Sukoon Genuinely available — this is a real operational feature
A way to switch it off immediately Somebody will ask, and the answer cannot be "we can't" Any machine switches off; a reed diffuser has no off switch and must be removed from the room Machine formats are better here than reeds
Servicing, spares and warranty for the hardware A signature that depends on one machine depends on that machine being repairable Warranty term, spare parts, servicing and app platform are unconfirmed Ask before committing; do not infer a term that is not stated
The honest caveat: this table describes commercial and product availability at the time of writing, not clinical guidance, and nothing in it claims any effect on any person or on the performance of a practice. Availability changes — confirm anything load-bearing with SOSA through the contact page before you commit, and treat an unanswered supply question as a reason to wait rather than a detail to settle later.
Shop this guide
Three formats, ranked by how easily you can keep them going
The SOSA principle
A signature is a promise to be the same next year. So the right question is not which fragrance suits the practice, but which consumable the practice can still buy when the interest has worn off — and where that answer is not yet clear, the honest recommendation is to wait.
Which is why this page recommends a ₹1,349 bottle more often than an ₹11,999 machine.

Part three — when a clinic should not do this at all

The first case is a practice that enjoys changing things. A different scent in winter is a legitimate preference — but it is not a signature, and calling it one only sets up the disappointment. Run what you like at a low level and stop worrying about consistency. The second is a practice with three or more branches that wants them all identical. There is no published multi-location programme, no bulk pricing and no stated lead time, so prove it in one branch and ask us in writing before rolling it anywhere.

The third is any practice where the reception cannot be separated from the clinical route by real distance, or where the front of the building is small and poorly ventilated — a closed room gets heavier with a fragrance, not fresher. A children's eye clinic or a large paediatric caseload is the one I decline outright, and a practice whose real complaint is a cleaning or disinfectant smell should fix that first, since fragrance covers nothing and layering it produces a third smell worse than either.

The fourth is the one I have already made and will make again, because it is the most expensive mistake available here. Do not build a signature on a machine whose consumable you cannot currently re-buy. The Vaayu is an excellent piece of equipment for a large arrival zone — under 38 dB, key-lock, scheduled run windows, no water and no plume — and none of that changes the fact that no separate cold-air refill oil is listed at the time of writing. Buy it for a reception that needs it. But if the plan is one scent, every branch, for five years, get a written answer on refill supply from the contact page before spending anything.

A signature is not a fragrance decision. It is a procurement decision that happens to smell of something. Answer the supply question first, and the scent question becomes easy.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part four — should you start one? by practice profile

Find the row that matches your practice. Three of the six say wait or no, and those are the rows I would most like to be read.

The signature decision
Six practice profiles, with a yes, a wait or a no
Practice profile Start a signature? The format that can hold it Confirm first
Single clinic, arrival zone under ~150 sq ft ★ Yes — this is the easiest case in the cluster Mountain Breeze 130ml, about three bottles a year: 3 × ₹1,349 = ₹4,047 Nothing beyond ordinary stock — reeds are not sold separately, so keep a spare bottle
Single clinic, 150–320 sq ft reception and waiting Yes, with a machine so the level can be locked and scheduled Sukoon ₹1,899 plus one Hotel Collection 300ml ₹1,799 held as the standard That the specific scent you choose remains listed; keep one spare bottle
Single site, 320+ sq ft of connected public area Only after the supply answer Vaayu ₹11,999, freestanding, lowest intensity, run window on opening hours, key-lock on Current Vaayu cold-air refill availability, in writing, before committing
Two or more branches wanting one identity Not yet — prove it in one branch Whatever the smallest branch can hold; consistency beats ambition Multi-site supply, terms and lead time — none of which is published
A practice that likes to vary the scent No, and no harm done Any low, dry composition in the arrival zone, changed when you please Nothing — you do not want a signature, you want a nice reception
Paediatric caseload, or a small under-ventilated reception No None. Ventilation first, and in a children's clinic I would not scent at all ₹0 — this is the row I would rather you land on than the wrong yes
Honest notes for buyers: nothing on this page is medical, clinical or safety advice, and no SOSA product is described as safe or unsuitable for any patient group. A diffuser adds a scent to the air; it does not clean, purify, filter, sanitise or disinfect air, and does not remove disinfectant, damp or occupancy smells. No claim is made about comfort, anxiety, waiting time, recovery, reviews, footfall, retention or revenue. Some people are sensitive to airborne fragrance, which is why the clinical pathway stays fragrance-free and a fragrance-free seat should always exist. Annual figures above are arithmetic on listed prices — 3 × ₹1,349 = ₹4,047 — not quotations, and longevity ranges vary with ventilation, temperature and humidity. SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu cold-air refill oil; the 400ml supplied in the box is the fragrance available at the time of writing, and the water-based Hotel Collection must not be used in a Vaayu. SOSA publishes no bulk or commercial pricing, no corporate account, no annual maintenance contract, no installation service, no stated warranty term and no multi-location programme; warranty length, spare parts, servicing and app platform are unconfirmed. Megh at ₹3,499 covers about 215 sq ft — less than a Sukoon — so it is a runtime and humidity machine, never a coverage upgrade. Safar at ₹3,999 is a car and travel diffuser with no published coverage figure. SOSA sells no room spray; every SOSA spray is a car perfume. Ask through the contact page before committing. Free shipping above ₹499.
SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic diffuser for a clinic reception signature, with catalogue refills
A signature you can lock, schedule and re-buy
SOSA Sukoon · 500ml ultrasonic, 270–320 sq ft ₹1,899
For a 150–320 sq ft arrival zone this is the sized product, and for a signature it has the advantage that matters most: its fragrance is an ordinary catalogue item. The water-based Hotel Collection comes in 15ml ₹299, 100ml ₹999 and 300ml ₹1,799, so holding one scent constant means reordering the same bottle. Three 15ml fragrances are included, enough to trial before standardising. Steady / 2H / 4H timers and a remote fix a run pattern; 16–18 hours on low means a fill lasts several working days. It is ultrasonic, so it adds a little humidity — site it away from paper records, fabric and spectacle displays. These scents are inspired by the atmosphere of well-known hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian brand, unaffiliated with any hotel group, and reed oil must never be put in it.

A note from Sonal

The first practice that asked me about a signature had four branches and a brand consultant, and what they wanted was a paragraph they could put in a document. What I gave them instead was a question: can you buy this exact oil, in this quantity, in eighteen months? Nobody in the room had asked it, and it turned out to be the only question that mattered.

I would rather say this on my own page than have a practice find it out later. SOSA does not currently sell a separate cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu. The 400ml in the box is the supply available at the time of writing, and while that is fine for a home it is not a foundation for a business identity. If you want a signature today and you want it to hold, the reed range and the water-based Hotel Collection are the honest formats, because you can reorder both yourself without asking anyone's permission.

There is a version of this page that would have sold more machines and put the refill position in a footnote. It would have been worth nothing to a practice owner, who is professionally cautious for good reasons and can spot a hedge from a long way off. Made in Pune in small batches, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Is a signature fragrance worth it for a single-clinic practice?
It can be, and it is the easiest case to get right: one room and one consumable is a commitment you can keep. A 130ml reed diffuser at ₹1,349 lasting 14–18 weeks is roughly three bottles a year — 3 × ₹1,349 = ₹4,047 — and every bottle is the same. No claim is made that this affects reviews, footfall or revenue; it is a consistency decision, nothing more.
Can I build a practice signature around the Vaayu?
Not without confirming supply first. The Vaayu ships with 400ml of cold-air oil, roughly 90+ days at a mid setting, and no separate refill of that oil is sold at the time of writing. The water-based Hotel Collection is made for ultrasonic machines and must not be used in it. Ask through the contact page for the current position before you commit — and if the answer is not yet clear, wait.
What happens if we run out and have to switch?
You lose the signature and you announce the loss, which is why supply is the gate rather than an afterthought. A neutral reception is unremarkable; a reception that changes scent is a change people register. If a substitution is unavoidable, the least disruptive move is to go unscented for a fortnight rather than swap in a different composition immediately — particularly in a softly furnished room, where the previous scent lingers in the upholstery for weeks.
Can the same signature run in the clinical areas so the building is consistent?
No. Examination rooms, refraction and diagnostic areas, consultation cabins, dilation bays, the procedure suite and post-operative areas stay fragrance-free, signature or not — that boundary is what makes scenting the reception defensible in the first place. Consistency means the same scent in the arrival zone of every branch, not the same scent in every room of one building. And a diffuser should never be mounted into shared air-conditioning in a clinical building.
Does SOSA offer bulk pricing or a multi-site programme for practices?
Nothing of the kind is published — no bulk or commercial pricing, no corporate account, no discount slab, no annual maintenance contract, no installation service, no stated warranty term and no multi-location programme, and lead times are not published either. Where a practice would reasonably expect one of those to exist, assume it does not and ask through the contact page before committing to anything that depends on it.
Eye clinics · reception and waiting only
Have a signature only if you can hold it
For a small arrival zone, a reed signature at about ₹4,047 a year — 3 × ₹1,349 — is the format most practices can genuinely keep. For 150–320 sq ft, a Sukoon at ₹1,899 with one Hotel Collection scent held as the standard, 300ml ₹1,799. Past roughly 320 sq ft, a freestanding Vaayu at ₹11,999 — but no separate cold-air refill oil is sold at the time of writing, so confirm availability with SOSA before building an identity on it. A diffuser adds a scent to the air; it does not clean or purify air, remove any existing smell, or have any clinical or commercial effect. Free shipping above ₹499.
