The time answer: nine bottles at two minutes each for the weekly flip is 18 minutes a week — about 15½ hours a year before you count bottle changes.
The machine answer: a Vaayu asks for one fill per 90+ days, one schedule set once, and a wipe. Call it under an hour a year.
The catch, stated up front: the Vaayu ships with 400ml and SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu refill oil, so its running cost beyond the first fill cannot honestly be calculated. Ask SOSA before you plan around it.
2. Reed diffusers for everything behind a door. ₹749–₹849 for a 50ml lasting six to eight weeks, ₹1,249–₹1,349 for a 130ml lasting 14 to 18. No socket, no tank, no switch, nothing to spill into a plug. The cost of many bottles is controlled with oil-only refills at ₹2,399 for 300ml or ₹3,499 for 500ml — about ₹7–8 per millilitre against ₹15–17 for a fresh bottle.
3. Cost the flip honestly. All six reeds, end for end, gloves on, weekly, plus a wipe of the neck and a look at the tray. Two minutes a bottle done properly. Nine bottles is 18 minutes a week, which is 936 minutes or roughly 15½ hours a year — arithmetic on 52 weeks, not a measurement.
4. Add the bottle changes. A 50ml at seven weeks is about 7.4 changes a year per position; across nine positions that is roughly 67 changes at four minutes each, another 4½ hours.
5. Weigh that against what a machine asks. A Vaayu is specified at 90+ days per 400ml fill, holds its schedule through the app or its onboard buttons, and has a key-lock so a guest cannot alter it. Under an hour a year of attention, and 5W of power.
6. Then read the asterisk. SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu refill oil. The 400ml in the box is the supply available today, so the machine's cost beyond the first fill is not something I can quote you. The water-based Hotel Collection is a different product for ultrasonic machines and is not a Vaayu refill. If continuity matters, ask SOSA first.
7. No performance claims. Nothing here says or implies that either choice affects ratings, reviews, bookings, occupancy or revenue. It affects what a guest walks into, and how much of your cleaner's hour it consumes.
The Vaayu is made in India; our reed diffuser fragrances are composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Part one — what each format actually asks of the people who run your property
A host does not operate their own listing; a cleaner does, usually one of several, usually against a checklist, usually with forty minutes between a checkout and a check-in. Any scenting plan that survives contact with that reality has to be describable in one line on a checklist and has to fail visibly when it fails. Reed diffusers are cheap to buy and expensive to remember. Machines are expensive to buy and cheap to remember. Everything below follows from that sentence, and neither half of it is a criticism of the product — both are doing exactly what their design permits.
Vaayu₹11,999 · 5WThe Vaayu holds 400ml and is specified at 90+ days per fill — which is 400 ÷ 90, roughly 4.4ml a day as arithmetic on the manufacturer's numbers at their stated conditions, and a figure that moves with intensity and run hours. Its schedule is set once through the Bluetooth app or the onboard buttons, with 1h / 4h / 8h / 24h timers, adjustable mist intensity and auto-stop, and the key-lock means a guest cannot change what you set, which on a property full of strangers is worth more than raw output. Power is 5W: 5 × 24 hours is 120 watt-hours, or 0.12 units a day, which at an illustrative ₹8 per unit is under a rupee a day. State tariffs differ and I am not quoting anyone's bill. The honest limit of this paragraph is that after the 400ml, SOSA has no separate Vaayu refill oil on sale today.Part two — the labour ledger, costed in minutes
A four-bedroom listing with nine reed positions and one common-space machine, over one year. All figures are arithmetic on a stated routine — two minutes for a flip, four for a bottle change, five for a machine fill — not stopwatch measurements, and your team will be faster or slower. Assume 100 turnovers in the year.
| Task | Format | How often | Minutes each time | Hours a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flip all six reeds, 9 bottles ★ | Reed diffusers | Weekly, 52 times | 2 per bottle = 18 | ≈ 15.6 hrs |
| Replace a finished 50ml bottle | Reed diffusers | ≈ 67 times (9 positions × 7.4) | 4 | ≈ 4.5 hrs |
| Glance at levels during a turnover | Reed diffusers | 100 turnovers | 2 for the whole set | ≈ 3.3 hrs |
| Wipe trays, clear marked surfaces | Reed diffusers | Monthly | 10 for the whole set | ≈ 2.0 hrs |
| Fill the 400ml tank | Vaayu | Once per 90+ days per fill | 5 | Under 0.5 hrs |
| Set or adjust the schedule | Vaayu | Set once; occasional change | 2 | Negligible |
| The honest caveat: the reed side of this ledger totals roughly 25 hours a year — call it three working days of housekeeping attention — and every minute of it is real, repeatable and delegable. The machine side is under an hour, but it is only complete for the first 400ml, because SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu refill oil. I would rather you saw a comparison with a hole in it than a comparison I had filled in with a number I do not have. Ask SOSA about refill availability before you decide. | ||||

Part three — where multiple reed diffusers still win outright
There are properties where the labour argument simply does not apply, and I would be doing you a disservice to bury them. If you have an on-site caretaker, a resident manager or a family member who is at the property weekly, the flip is already inside somebody's existing route and costs you nothing you were not already spending. The same is true of a host who lives in one part of the building and lets the rest. In those cases nine reed diffusers at ₹749–₹849 each, run on ₹3,499 refills, will scent the property beautifully for a fraction of ₹11,999 and give you a different scent in different rooms if you want one — which no single machine can do.
Reeds also win on risk, and hosts underrate this. There is nothing to switch on, nothing to run dry, no tank, no cord across a floor and nothing a curious guest can reprogramme. They keep working through a power cut, which in much of India is not a hypothetical. They cost ₹799 to replace if one is broken, against a machine you would be waiting on. And they solve the one problem a common-floor machine structurally cannot: a closed bedroom door is a wall, and the room behind it needs its own source no matter what you have bought downstairs. Even in a property that ends up with a Vaayu, most of the sources in the building will still be reed diffusers.
The last argument for reeds is that they are bounded and known. I can tell you what a reed position costs to run for the next three years: a 500ml refill at ₹3,499 per 14 to 18 months, which is about ₹2,400 to ₹3,000 a year, times however many positions you have. I cannot tell you the equivalent number for a Vaayu, because there is no separate cold-air refill on sale at SOSA today and I will not invent one. That asymmetry is a genuine reason for a cautious host to stay with reeds a while longer, or at least to write to SOSA and ask what the supply position will be before spending ₹11,999. Buy the machine for the space and the labour it saves, with your eyes open about the oil.
Part four — the bounded cost picture, with the hole left in it
Five ways to run a large listing, with the up-front cost, the repeating cost and the annual staff time side by side. Every rupee figure is arithmetic on the verified prices; the time figures are arithmetic on the routine described above.
| How you run it | Up front | Repeating cost | Staff time a year | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hybrid: 1 Vaayu + 8 reed positions ★ | ₹11,999 + ~₹6,400 | ~₹18,700–₹24,000 of reed refills | ≈ 23 hrs | No Vaayu refill oil is sold today — ask SOSA first |
| 9 reed positions, new 50ml bottles | ~₹7,200 | ≈ 67 bottles a year, ~₹53,500 | ≈ 25 hrs | The most expensive way to buy oil |
| 9 reed positions, run on 500ml refills | ~₹7,200 of bottles once | ~₹21,000–₹27,000 a year | ≈ 25 hrs | Reeds are not sold separately; refresh them every few months |
| 1 Sukoon + 8 reed positions | ₹1,899 + ~₹6,400 | Reed refills + Hotel Collection from ₹299 | ≈ 24 hrs | 270–320 sq ft only; adds humidity to the room |
| Vaayu alone, no reeds | ₹11,999 | 5W, about 0.12 units a day | Under 1 hr | Every closed room in the property gets nothing |
Versailles
I started costing this in minutes after a host in Goa told me, quite cheerfully, that she had eleven of our bottles and had flipped none of them since March. She was not careless; she simply had a business to run and a cleaning team that changed every few months. The bottles were doing about a quarter of what they were built to do, and she had been considering buying more of them.
That conversation is the reason this page exists. The flip is not an accessory to a reed diffuser, it is the reed diffuser working, and any format that depends on a weekly human action needs a human who reliably performs it. Where that person exists, reeds are the best value in the category by a distance. Where they do not, a machine is not an indulgence — it is a way of removing a task that was going to fail.
What I will not do is finish that argument with a number I cannot support. There is no separate cold-air refill for the Vaayu on sale from us today, and until there is, the honest thing to say to a host planning three seasons ahead is: write and ask before you spend. I would rather you bought the right thing late than the wrong thing on my encouragement. Everything we compose is handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
