Why do expensive gifts not work on them? Because they can price a gift on sight, so the evaluation is finished before it is opened. Novelty of mechanism is harder to pre-empt than novelty of price.
What is the risk? Getting the sizing wrong. Somebody hard to impress will notice an over-scented home immediately, and that is the giver's mistake.
People who are hard to impress are people who know prices
It is worth being honest about why gifts bounce off certain people, because the usual explanations are unkind and also wrong. Somebody difficult to impress is rarely ungrateful and rarely jaded. They are informed. They know what things cost, they have seen the shops, and when a box is handed over they have already estimated its price, guessed its provenance and considered what else that money could have bought - all before the ribbon is off. That means the entire mechanism by which most gifts work, which is the pleasant surprise of a price, has been disabled. You cannot outbid a person who reads price tags for a living. What has not been disabled is information. Nobody can pre-empt a fact they do not have, and a gift that arrives with a genuinely unfamiliar mechanism produces the reaction that money no longer produces: how does that work. In home fragrance this happens to be available, because almost everything people have encountered works one of two ways. There are bottles with reeds, which evaporate into the air around them. And there are ultrasonic diffusers, which vibrate water into a visible mist that you can see, that humidifies the room, and that eventually leaves a film and needs the tank wiped. Both are familiar, and neither is interesting to somebody who has already seen them. The SOSA Vaayu at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees works a third way, and it is the part worth saying out loud when it is handed over. It is waterless. Pressurised air is used to break undiluted fragrance oil into a dry nano-mist - particles fine enough to hang in the air and travel with whatever air the home is already moving - so there is no water in the machine at all. No tank of water, no visible plume, no humidity added to a closed air-conditioned room, no heat, and no oily residue on the surface underneath, because nothing wet is being thrown into the room. It also means the oil is undiluted rather than a few drops in a bowl of water, which is why the coverage figure is on a different scale: up to a thousand cubic metres, stated as about two thousand to three thousand square feet, against a room for an ultrasonic unit. The rest of the specification is the kind of detail this particular recipient will actually read. Under thirty-eight decibels. Twelve volts, five watts. Four hundred millilitre refillable tank, up to around seventy-five days a fill. Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, with one, four, eight and twenty-four hour run windows, day selection and adjustable intensity. One hundred and sixty-five by eighty by two hundred and fifteen millimetres and nine hundred grams, black or white, freestanding on a shelf or mounted on a wall or an HVAC return. Auto-stop and a key lock. CE, RoHS and SGS. Made in India. And it ships with four one hundred millilitre hotel-inspired oils in one of three curated combinations, so it runs on the evening it is opened rather than after a consumable has been ordered. Refills afterwards are the waterless nebuliser oils at one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams or one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine for three hundred, including Vetiver, Neelakurinji and Malabar Lemon, and not the water-based Hotel Collection at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees, which is a separate system for ultrasonic machines. Now the warning, and for this recipient it matters more than for any other. A person who is hard to impress is a person who notices errors. If the machine goes into a home that is too small for it, it will be noticed immediately, because an over-scented house is unpleasant and obvious, and the fault will sit with the gift rather than with the setting. So the sizing question comes before the impressing question. The Vaayu belongs in a villa, a large open-plan apartment, a penthouse or a four or five bedroom home of roughly two thousand square feet or more. In a normal two or three bedroom flat the correct gift is reed diffusers, and giving them is not settling: Morning Freshness at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees for fifty millilitres and one thousand two hundred and forty-nine for one hundred and thirty; Garden Bloom and Evening Calm at seven hundred and ninety-nine and one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine; Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew at eight hundred and forty-nine and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine; and a duo set at one thousand four hundred and ninety-eight to two thousand five hundred and ninety-eight rupees, which pairs two registers and reads as a considered present. If the home is larger than about three thousand square feet, or if what is actually being scented is an office, clinic or showroom, the honest answer is above the Vaayu: SOSA Angaan at twenty-five thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees for around eight to ten thousand square feet, SOSA Meenar at thirty-eight thousand five hundred for twelve to eighteen thousand. Two final honest notes, because this reader will test them. There are no health, sleep or air-purification claims here - it is a fragrance machine and nothing more. And if the person would simply rather not have another device in the house, the mechanism is irrelevant and bottles are the right gift, because the best product is the one that gets used. In a new home, both wait a few weeks while paint and new joinery air out, since fragrance is a finishing touch and never a fix.
So the gift has to carry a fact they did not already have
One mechanism they have not met, and one size question asked first.

Versailles
The Vaayu is the most expensive thing we make and we turn down more orders for it than for anything else in the range. Not because we do not want to sell it - because most homes do not need it. It covers up to a thousand cubic metres, roughly two to three thousand square feet, and that is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan flat or a house with a double-height room. An ordinary 2BHK is not that, and in an ordinary 2BHK a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees does the job better than eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees of machine would. So the question we ask is never what somebody spent on their house. It is how many cubic metres of air are in it.
The second thing we say, and almost nobody expects it, is wait a few weeks. A brand-new home smells of paint, varnish, polish, cement and new wood, and those are not smells to cover - they need open windows and time, and they go on their own. Give the machine at the housewarming by all means, but tell them the scenting starts once the building has finished smelling of being built. It is the same rule we apply to a new car, for the same reason: adding fragrance to a smell that is fading anyway is how a good product gets blamed for a bad result.
Two honest limits. Reed diffusers do not fail in large homes, they simply do not reach - a diffuser on a console table scents the area around that console table, which is not a fault, it is physics, and several of them is a real alternative to one machine. And there are two machines above the Vaayu, the Angaan and the Meenar, which are HVAC units for showrooms and hotel floors rather than houses - so if a home is genuinely far beyond three thousand square feet, message us rather than assuming more money solves it.
