The Kerala monsoon timeline
The Kerala monsoon is governed by predictable phases. Understanding the phases is what makes the 4-month protocol work.
Onset (early June). The southwest monsoon makes landfall on the Kerala coast typically between June 1 and June 5. Humidity rises from spring baseline (around 75%) to monsoon baseline (around 85%) within the first 10 days. Set up the diffuser before June 1.
Build (mid-June through early July). Humidity climbs steadily into the 88-91% range. The brain is still adjusting. The diffuser is doing perception priming, not heavy lifting. Reed rotation cadence - every 10 days.
Peak (mid-July through mid-August). Humidity sits at 91-93% for four to five weeks. This is when mustiness is loudest and when most homes break and start spraying things. Reed rotation cadence - every 7 days. Stay disciplined.

Why light scents win across 4 months
Most fragrance guides recommend "cosy" or "warm" scents for monsoon - vanilla, cinnamon, gourmand-coffee. That advice is wrong for Kerala specifically because of the duration of the season.
Heavy base notes (vanilla, oud, leather, deep musk) accumulate on porous surfaces over time. In a 2-week monsoon, that is invisible. In a 17-week monsoon, the accumulation is substantial. The 4-month protocol
Week 0 - last week of May, prep
Air the apartment. Check wardrobes for stored items. Replace silica gel in any closed cabinets. Buy your two bottles of Morning Freshness (one bottle covers each room for 10-12 weeks; for a 2BHK you want two bottles minimum).

Weeks 7-10 (July 13-August 9) - peak

Weeks 11-14 (August 10-September 6) - sustained

Weeks 15-17 (September 7-30) - retreat
Humidity tapers. Rotation can stretch back to 10-14 days. By September 30, both bottles will be running low or empty. Stop refilling. October 1 begins dry-season air.
What to avoid in Kerala monsoon
Do not use heavy gourmand or oriental diffusers. Vanilla, caramel, oud, leather - all will accumulate over the 4-month season and become unbearable by week 8.
