Indoor Air Quality and Scent - The Honest Truth

Indoor Air Quality and Scent - The Honest Truth

Sinus, cold and respiratory sensitivity, vol. 08

SOSA Editorial - 13 May 2026 - 12 min read

A reed diffuser is not an air purifier. It does not remove PM2.5. It does not kill germs. It does not bind to formaldehyde, neutralise smoke, or improve any measurable parameter on an AQI sensor. What it does is change how a room smells, which changes how the people in it perceive the air. Those are two entirely different things, and Indian buyers deserve to know which is which.

Our recommendation, honestly positioned

SOSA Morning Freshness - Energising Malabar Lemon & Mint Reed Diffuser

A scent product that perfumes the room. Pair it with a HEPA filter to actually clean the air. From Rs. 749

5-second summary

Scent perception and actual air quality are independent variables. A room can smell wonderful with PM2.5 at 200, and a room can smell of nothing with PM2.5 at 5. Use a reed diffuser for the experience of the room. Use a HEPA filter for the chemistry of the air. Use a window for fresh-air exchange when AQI allows. Stop expecting any one product to do all three.

Scent Perception vs Actual PM2.5 Two independent variables - do not confuse them Pleasant Neutral Unpleasant Scent perception PM2.5 low (good) PM2.5 high (bad) Actual air quality (PM2.5) Ideal Good smell + clean air SOSA + HEPA + ventilation The confusion Smells good, air is bad most Indian metro homes Clean but stale Air is fine, just musty HEPA without ventilation Worst case Smells bad and is bad cooking smoke + outdoor PM Scent fixes the y-axis. HEPA fixes the x-axis.
Scent perception and PM2.5 are independent variables - a diffuser fixes only one.

The fragrance vs AQI confusion

The most common indoor-air mistake in Indian homes is treating scent as a proxy for cleanness. The logic seems intuitive - if a room smells fresh, surely the air must be okay. The logic is also wrong. PM2.5, the most-discussed indoor air pollutant in Indian metros, is odourless. NO2 from cooking is odourless after the first few minutes. Formaldehyde from new furniture is odourless at indoor levels. None of these register on the nose.

What does register on the nose is fragrance - and that fragrance has nothing to do with whether the air is clean. A room with PM2.5 at 250 can smell like fresh-cut lemons. A room with PM2.5 at 5 can smell of damp paint. The two variables are independent.

This is the single most important thing for an Indian household to understand about indoor air. Stop using your nose as an air quality sensor. Use an actual sensor.

What actually cleans indoor air

Three things, in order of impact.

1. HEPA filtration

A good HEPA air purifier sized for your room volume removes 99.97 percent of particulates 0.3 microns and larger. That covers PM2.5, most pollen, most mould spores, and many bacterial-sized particles. In an Indian metro, this is the single most useful indoor air investment. Run it 24/7 on auto mode if the unit supports it.

2. Source control

Reducing what enters the air at the source. Switch from incense to electric mosquito repellent. Switch from cheap candles to low-emission ones. Pull out plug-in air fresheners. Cover food while frying. Wipe surfaces weekly. Source control beats filtration when both are available.

3. Ventilation

Bringing fresh outdoor air into the home when outdoor AQI is acceptable. A 10-minute window crack twice a day, with cross-ventilation, exchanges the indoor air volume meaningfully. This is the variable that lets a sealed AC apartment avoid the slow climb of internal VOCs over weeks.

Notice what is not on this list. Reed diffusers. Sprays. Candles. Plug-ins. Incense. None of these clean indoor air. Most of them add load to it.

What a reed diffuser actually does

A reed diffuser does one job - it makes the air smell different. Specifically, a SOSA-style reed diffuser does this with phthalate-free carrier, IFRA-compliant ingredients, and a low-throw projection that respects sensitive lungs.

The honest claims for a reed diffuser are these. It changes how the room smells. It can support the perception of clean breathing when the underlying scent reads as clean (see our lemon-mint clean-air article). It can replace older, dirtier scent sources like plug-ins and aerosols. It can help during cold recovery, allergy flares, and pregnancy hyperosmia at low dose.

The dishonest claims for a reed diffuser - the ones we will not make at SOSA - are these. That it improves air quality. That it neutralises odours through chemistry rather than masking them. That it filters, kills germs, or removes anything from the air. It does none of those things. If a brand tells you otherwise, walk away.

5 real sources of bad indoor air in India

If you want to improve your home's actual indoor air, these are the variables that move the needle. The diffuser is not on this list.

Source 1Outdoor PM2.5 infiltration

The biggest contributor in most Indian metros. PM2.5 enters through windows, doors, AC ducts, and any unsealed gap. Fix - HEPA purifier in the rooms you spend most time in. Run continuously during AQI peaks.

Source 2Cooking smoke

Indian cooking - tadka, frying, roasting - is a major indoor PM2.5 contributor in homes without good kitchen exhaust. Fix - working chimney over the stove, kept clean. Cook with the kitchen door closed and chimney on.

Source 3Mosquito coils and incense

Burning anything releases significant PM2.5 directly into the room. A single mosquito coil over a few hours can push a bedroom into hazardous PM territory. Fix - switch to electric mosquito repellents and skip incense in sealed rooms.

Source 4Plug-in air fresheners and aerosols

Continuous high-VOC release with no projection control. Adds chemical load without removing anything. Fix - replace with a low-throw reed diffuser if you want scent, or with nothing if the room already smells clean.

Source 5Stagnant air and damp surfaces

Sealed AC apartments with no fresh-air exchange develop mould and dust mite populations that smell musty and tax sensitive lungs. Fix - 10-minute window cycle daily when AQI permits, weekly bedding wash, fortnightly mop with diluted vinegar.

SOSA's place in a good indoor-air setup

A good indoor-air setup in an Indian home looks like this.

Layer Tool What it does
1. Chemistry HEPA air purifier sized to room Removes PM2.5, pollen, mould spores
2. Source control Working kitchen chimney, no mosquito coils, no plug-ins Reduces what enters the air
3. Ventilation Daily 10-minute window cycle when AQI permits Exchanges indoor air with outdoor
4. Humidity Cool-mist humidifier in winter, dehumidifier in monsoon Keeps mucosa comfortable and mould down
5. Experience SOSA reed diffuser (Morning Freshness, etc) Makes the room smell pleasant - perceptual layer only

The SOSA layer is honest - the last one, the smallest one, the one that does not pretend to do another layer's job. That is the only layer we can claim.

Our pick

SOSA Morning Freshness - Malabar Lemon & Mint

Morning Freshness is the SOSA we recommend for any Indian home thinking carefully about indoor air. It is a scent product - it does not clean the air. What it does is read as clean air to sensitive lungs (perceptual layer) without adding the kind of chemical load that plug-ins and aerosols do. Pair it with a HEPA filter and source control and you have a complete setup.

Start with 2 reeds, increase to 3 if needed. Run alongside an air purifier for genuine indoor air improvement. From Rs. 749.

Founder note

From SOSA

The honest-positioning principle came out of a long email exchange with a customer in Davangere, 2023 - an architect designing healthcare interiors who had been hired to specify air-quality products for a chain of clinics. She wrote to me asking, very directly, whether SOSA could make any antimicrobial or air-purifying claims.

I said no. I also explained, in three paragraphs, what SOSA actually does and what it does not. She thanked me and wrote back two weeks later - "I have been quoted three brands so far that claim their diffuser purifies air. You are the only one who said it does not. You got the order."

That exchange shaped how we talk about every SOSA product since. We do not over-claim. We tell customers what the product does (changes how a room smells) and what it does not (clean the air). The customers who care about indoor air respect that honesty. The ones who want a magical claim go elsewhere, which is fine for everyone involved.

Frequently asked questions

Does a reed diffuser improve indoor air quality?

No. It does not remove pollutants, particulates, or pathogens. It adds a small amount of fragrance VOC and changes how the air smells. Actual air quality improvement needs HEPA filtration, ventilation, and source control.

Can a nice-smelling room have bad PM2.5?

Yes, easily. PM2.5 is odourless and invisible. Indian metro homes routinely have PM2.5 well above WHO guidelines in homes that smell pleasant. A nice smell is not a measurement of air quality.

Is using a reed diffuser bad in a polluted city?

Not necessarily. A phthalate-free, IFRA-compliant, low-throw diffuser adds a small amount of VOC, typically well below concern thresholds. Plug-ins, candles, and cooking smoke are much larger contributors.

Should I run an air purifier alongside a reed diffuser?

In any Indian metro with sustained AQI above 100, yes - a HEPA purifier is the single best indoor air investment. The diffuser is the complementary layer for comfort.

Is SOSA Morning Freshness honest about what it does?

Yes. SOSA reed diffusers are scent products. They make rooms smell better. They do not filter air, kill germs, or remove particulates. The Morning Freshness profile reads as clean air for sensitive lungs - a perceptual claim, not a chemistry claim.
