What is free, and does help: a ceiling fan on low in a closed room — the best free fix there is, because it supplies the transport a reed lacks. 2. Yes, if you mean a bedroom that smells beautiful and reads as scented. Which is what most people actually enjoy living with. A reed in the right place gives you fragrance on arrival, fragrance at the bedside, fragrance whenever you cross the room. That is a real and pleasant result, and for a great many bedrooms it is the whole answer.
3. Try the fan before you try your wallet. A ceiling fan on low, in a closed room, with the bottle out of the direct downdraught, is the only free change that adds transport rather than emission — and it is the reason I put it above every product on this page. Why a point source cannot be even, however good it is
Put a bottle of oil on a table with six fibre reeds standing in it and you have built something very specific: a source of fragrance at one location, with nothing to carry it away from that location. The oil climbs the reeds by capillary action and evaporates from their surface. From that moment the vapour is at the mercy of two processes. The first is molecular diffusion, which is real and is far too slow to be useful across the width of a room. The second is whatever air the room is already moving — convection rising off a warm wall, the draught under a door, a fan, an air conditioner. That second process does nearly all the work, and it belongs to your room rather than to the bottle.
So the shape of what you have is fixed. Concentration is highest at the reeds and declines outward, smoothly, in every direction. Nothing you can add to the bottle changes that shape. More reeds raise the whole curve, so the peak is higher and the outer edge moves a little; the fall-off is identical, and the bottle empties in half the time. What only a reed does, and why I still keep one by my own bed
Having spent a page telling you what a reed diffuser cannot do, let me be equally precise about what nothing else on our shelf does. It is silent — genuinely silent, not quiet, with no pump, no plate, no fan and no hum at three in the morning.
