A modular kitchen can look immaculate and still greet you with yesterday's tadka the moment you open a cabinet. The kitchen is won at the extractor and the cupboards, not the diffuser — clear the cooking at source, keep the closed units dry and aired, and only then lay a clean, fresh scent that never competes with food.

Quick answer

Where the smell hides: the bin, the under-sink cabinet, the drain and the closed units — not the shiny surfaces.

Fix first: extractor on while cooking, empty and wipe the bin daily, keep under-sink dry, air the cabinets.

Then scent: a Morning Freshness reed on a far counter; a Boond for short bursts after cooking. Clean citrus, never sweet.

The short version
Short answer: A modular kitchen traps odour inside its cabinets and under the sink. Source-control those, then place a Morning Freshness reed away from the hob.
The pick: Morning Freshness reed ₹749 on a far counter; Boond ₹799 for after-cooking bursts on an open kitchen.

The paradox of a good modular kitchen is that everything is behind a door. The clean lines that make it beautiful are the same sealed cabinets, deep drawers and under-sink cupboards that hold onto oil, damp and the ghost of last night's fish curry. You can polish every surface and still get that stale breath when you open the tall unit. So the work of keeping it fresh happens where you can't see it — and fragrance is the last, small step, not the first.

Three places the smell actually lives
1
Source control
The bin, the drain and the under-sink cupboard

Nine times out of ten, a smelly modular kitchen is a bin problem or a damp under-sink problem. Waste sits in a warm, enclosed cupboard; the U-bend and the RO unit leak a little moisture; and the whole cabinet turns sour. Empty and wipe the bin every night, keep a lidded caddy for wet waste, and check the under-sink cupboard is genuinely dry — a small silica or charcoal sachet in there does more than any spray.

Do this first: no diffuser fixes a wet, warm bin cupboard. Dry and clean it, then scent the open air.
2
Airflow & extraction
Run the chimney, then air the cabinets

Your extractor or chimney is the single most important tool in the kitchen — switch it on before you start cooking, not once the smoke is up, and leave it running a few minutes after. Between cooking sessions, open the cabinets and the window for a short while so trapped air can move. Handleless, tightly-sealed modular units look wonderful but breathe poorly, so they need you to air them deliberately. This is unglamorous and it is the whole game.

3
The clean crown
One fresh, non-sweet scent on a far counter

Only once the source and the airflow are handled does fragrance earn its place. In a kitchen I always reach for clean citrus or herbal — never sweet or gourmand, because a vanilla or coffee note sitting over your cooking smells confused. The Morning Freshness reed in Malabar lemon and mint is my default: alcohol-free, passive, no heat, no power. Put it on a far counter or island, well away from the hob and any flame.

Placement: far from heat and water; a reed near the hob dries out fast and can sit dangerously close to a flame.
What to use where
Matching the product to the modular kitchen
Situation Use this Why
Everyday freshness, closed kitchen Morning Freshness reed ₹749 Passive, alcohol-free, clean lemon-mint — never sweet over food
Burst of freshness after cooking Boond ₹799 + scent ₹299 Run 15–20 min after the meal, then off; keep clear of heat
Open modular kitchen onto living Sukoon ₹1,799 Scents the shared room air rather than sitting over the hob
Dry, aired cabinet interior A small reed from ₹749 Passive and safe inside a unit — only if it stays dry and aired
If your modular kitchen opens onto the living or dining area, scent the shared air with a Sukoon rather than crowding the worktop — and keep it well back from the cooking zone.

The modular-kitchen default
SOSA Morning Freshness reed ₹749
Malabar lemon and mint — clean, bright and non-sweet, so it reads "fresh kitchen" rather than "dessert". Alcohol-free and passive: no heat, no power, no mist. Set it on a far counter away from the hob; a 50ml lasts roughly six to eight weeks.
A modular kitchen hides its smells behind beautiful doors — so you clean and dry behind the doors first, and let one fresh note do the rest.

My honest caveat, which I repeat in every kitchen article because it matters: fragrance never masks last night's fish or oil — extraction and cleaning do. If you find yourself adding more and more scent, that's the kitchen telling you a bin or a damp cupboard needs attention, not that you need a stronger diffuser. And a portion of whatever you buy goes towards girl-child education through Nanhi Kali, which I'm quietly glad to fold into something as everyday as keeping a kitchen fresh.

Frequently asked
Why does my modular kitchen smell even though it looks clean?
Because the smell is usually hiding in the closed cabinets, the under-sink cupboard, the bin and the drain — not on the visible surfaces. Handleless, well-sealed modular units trap cooking odour and damp. Empty and wipe the bin daily, keep the under-sink area dry, air the cabinets, and only then add fragrance.
What is the best fragrance for a modular kitchen?
A clean, non-sweet scent — citrus or herbal. The Morning Freshness reed in Malabar lemon and mint is my default: alcohol-free, passive, and fresh rather than gourmand, so it never smells like dessert over your dinner. Place it on a far counter, away from the hob and heat.
Should I put a diffuser inside a kitchen cabinet?
Only a passive reed, and only a small one, in a dry cabinet that is aired regularly. Never put an electric or water-based diffuser inside a closed unit, and never near heat. For most modular kitchens, a reed on the open counter plus dry, aired cabinets work better than scenting inside the boxes.
Will fragrance get rid of the smell in my cabinets?
No. Fragrance crowns a clean, dry, aired kitchen; it never masks trapped grease, damp or an old bin. Clear the source first with your extractor, daily bin hygiene and a dry under-sink cupboard, then let a clean reed keep the fresh air pleasant.
Keep it fresh
Clean and dry behind the doors, then one clean note on a far counter.
Start with a Morning Freshness reed for everyday freshness, and add a Boond for a quick burst after cooking. Both keep well clear of the hob — clean citrus, never sweet over food.
